What we played, what we thought.

We meet every two weeks at the UCONN Stamford campus.

We also use the Fairfield County Boardgames Meetup for scheduling ease.

Things started out a little late so while we were waiting for more people to arrive we rocked a three player coloretto game. It was Steves first, but we all did pretty poorly.

It was one of the closest games I've ever played with the final scores being 33-32-31. I did pull out the win though.

Michael and The Boy arrived and we got down to playing.

For some reason we had it in our heads that you only got income on your turn, Steve was shocked. Playing with a lot more money out there made for a very different feel.

I still like the variant we played with and might still pull it out once in a while, but this way made the bidding much more active and interesting.

Steve, The Boy and I started Runebound. Only Steve had played before, but The Boy and I are familiar enough with the format that it was pretty easy to pick up.

We played for about 2.5 hours, but then had to call the game early so we didn't get locked in.

There are things I really enjoyed, and some things I didn't. I liked that its combat felt a little more fleshed out than something like Return of the Heroes. There were a couple big downers for me though, the biggest being the rather large amount of downtime between turns. Sometimes you can be really fast, but other turns seems to take forever due to a lengthy combat. I also felt like the flavor was sort of pasted on, there didn't seem to be any real "questing" or purpose to go one way or the other or really to do much of anything other than get tougher and then go for red encounters. It's a shame because looking at the cards and the story, the world seems really vibrant and well put together. You just wouldn't notice it from the gameplay.

Michael managed to play this with his late arriving wife while simultaneously winning his first ever game of Nexus Ops. Word.
