[I started this on a whim yesterday. It's finally finished today after I pretty much disregarded everything else I was supposed to do to type up comments as I found the time. These are a lot of work even when you try to rush through them! I apologize in advance that my already not-so-great comments just got worse and worse as I attempted to get the list done and over with.]

I've been waiting for Jake's Top 50 for so long now that I figured I'd make my own while waiting, in order to demonstrate how quickly and carelessly it can be done. Following his example (how can one follow the example of a list that doesn't exist yet?), I've chosen a list of games and plugged them into the Pub Meeple Ranking Engine. To be honest, I did this twice. The results came back slightly (okay, sometimes wildly) different each time. Most notably, my #1 game was different in each list. That's okay.

My rules for inclusion? I must own the game. I may like the game.

My rules for ranking one game higher than another? In the moment of choosing, I simply picked which game I currently had a desire to play more in that moment, assuming that I could play the game right then with someone(s) just as interested in playing the game as I am.

There are great games that I do like and respect that I've previously owned or never owned. They are not on this list. If, for whatever reason, I don't feel the need to own a game, then it's just not loved enough by me to make it on a list like this.

That said, there are games on this list that I just would not own if I did not have children in the house. Future versions of this list (will there be future versions of this list?) will probably see these games get dropped. That's okay. The top 20 or so of this list is more "shelf stable" than the rest, but the entire thing is volatile. I've been playing games my whole life, born 1979. I've been a part of BGG hobby culture since 2005. It is 2020 and I'm still trying to figure out what kind of a gamer I am.

Thank you, Charles Cotton.

Yes, I've seen enough of these lists to know how to build the suspense. You've got to start with a fluff item, something describing previous lists, rankings, current honorable mentions, or whatever. It doesn't matter. This item is here to bump the whole list by one item, resulting in #1 getting its own page, page 5. Go ahead and jump to page 5 now if you need to know that #1 context before reading the rest.

2. Board Game: Kleiner Spatz [Average Rating:5.52 Unranked]
Board Game: Kleiner Spatz
#100
If I remember right, I bought this game at a small game shop in Saratoga Springs, NY, while there for a work conference. My oldest child would have been 5 at the time, which is already too old for this game, but it has been played by every child since. I guess it's my house's Candy Land. There's nothing more to it than rolling a die, seeing what color comes up, than moving your lovely chunky bird to the next nest of that color, hopefully flying over other birds in the process to pick up a few worms. There have been other beautiful kiddie games that have come and gone out of my house. Somehow Kleiner Spatz has survived all of the culls and earned a spot not only on my shelf but in my heart. Aww.

3. Board Game: TransAmerica [Average Rating:6.67 Overall Rank:1152]
Board Game: TransAmerica
#99
I've almost culled this many times. It's rarely my first pick for any gaming session, but I've brought it with me to game nights and gaming weekends and... it's almost always pretty satisfying. It's a relaxing game that becomes a bit mean with the Vexation expansion (there's no reason to play without it). Get dealt a hand of city cards. Connect those cities on the map. Do it first before the rest of the table. One can get dealt better or worse hands, but overall it's pretty even and short and light enough that it doesn't matter.

4. Board Game: Sprawlopolis [Average Rating:7.47 Overall Rank:404] [Average Rating:7.47 Unranked]
Board Game: Sprawlopolis
#98
I keep telling myself I'm not a solitaire gamer, then I keep having fun playing games with myself. I played Circle the Wagons before playing Sprawlopolis. After playing Sprawlopolis, I realized that it is the game that Circle the Wagons wants to be. The 2 player game can slow down with analysis paralysis when it really feels like it ought to be chugging along. In Sprawlopolis, that analysis paralysis is part of the pleasure. It's a solitaire puzzle in which taking one's time is part of the pleasure. I don't want to overemphasize this. The game is still very quick. But, slow or fast, the enjoyment is definitely in the puzzle of it.

Board Game: Animal Upon Animal

Stack an animal on top of another animal without knocking any of them down. I've played plenty of dexterity games. I'm not at all a connoisseur. Just give me wooden animals to stack on more wooden animals. That's enough.

Board Game: Ingenious: Travel Edition
#96
Hey, it's the first Knizia game on the list! This is just what it sounds like, a small travel version of Ingenious for 2 players. I prefer Ingenious at 2, so this is pretty much the perfect version for me, nice and compact in a small Kosmos 2 player sized box. My only complaint is that I don't know what I'll do if I ever lose one of the little scoring pegs, but that hasn't happened yet, so why worry?

7. Board Game: Azul [Average Rating:7.81 Overall Rank:55] [Average Rating:7.81 Unranked]
Board Game: Azul
#95
I've been surprised by how much my older children have liked Azul. They used to play it regularly with Becca at Saturday game days, and they've played it a lot on their own at home. They're all better than me at it now. :-) The game is just undeniably a pleasant game with a pleasant production... a pleasant game with a pleasant production that sometimes features truly nasty tile drafting. Tiles on your floor, sucker.

8. Board Game: Kingdomino [Average Rating:7.35 Overall Rank:228] [Average Rating:7.35 Unranked]
Board Game: Kingdomino
#94
If the older children have adopted Azul, then the younger children have embraced Kingdomino. You know that now cliche in reviews of kid movies that the film is good for kids, but has enough in it to satisfy the adults as well? That's how I feel about Kingdomino. The 6 and 8 and 10 year old can play it on their own, but I can also play it alongside them and be happy with the little bit of crunch that the game has.

Board Game: ZÈRTZ
#93
I've played all of the GIPF series except the newest one. I used to identify ZÈRTZ as my favorite, but it has slowly slipped away in my estimation as I've failed repeatedly to find opponents who enjoy it as much as I do. Sort of how the board shrinks as you play and you find yourself forced into bad options that weren't what you had originally envisioned, that's my gaming life with ZÈRTZ.

10. Board Game: Dominion [Average Rating:7.61 Overall Rank:102] [Average Rating:7.61 Unranked]
Board Game: Dominion
#92
I still haven't played any Dominion expansions. The thought of sorting all those cards gives me a headache. But the base game has been satisfying enough. I'm a big fan of direct confrontation in games, but I hate the 'take that' cards in Dominion. Unfortunately, my kids have always loved annoying me with them. Eh, in my mind, they just take away from the enjoyment of Dominion by clogging up the engine, making the game go slower, outstanding its welcome. So, I'll still happily play Dominion, but I do have a restricted card list.

11. Board Game: Gettysburg [Average Rating:7.27 Overall Rank:4946]
Board Game: Gettysburg
#91
I went through a wargame phase about a decade ago, playing games solo, and even attending GMT East one year. After a few years, I realized that I'm not really a wargamer. I like the play more than the simulation. Since then, I've continued to dabble in the genre, mostly looking for lighter and more playable games. Mark Herman's little Gettysburg game is exactly the sort of game that I hope to find now. I can teach it to my non-wargaming teenage daughter and have a good time with it. Well, she hasn't asked to play again since that one night, but she told me she had a good time, and I don't think she was just being polite to her old man.

13. Board Game: Hula Hippos [Average Rating:6.13 Overall Rank:6051]
Board Game: Hula Hippos
#89
I've got the Maus nach Haus version. Flicking mice is more fun than flicking hippos. Pitchcar didn't make it on this list, I think mostly because of its size and the fiddliness of setting it up. Maus nach Haus is tiny in comparison, which I've come to appreciate more and more. It may not produce the same cheers, but it's usually successful in generating enough shouts and giggles as mice fly around the room.

14. Board Game: Battleball [Average Rating:6.27 Overall Rank:2967]
Board Game: Battleball
#88
This is a nostalgia pick, but also on here because my two young sons play it with each other often and ask me to play it more often than I agree to play it. This was a pre-BGG game, 2003 (some of you surely remember the KB Toys discount bins), paving the way for the mass market Heroscape revolution which lasted a few brief years. I played Battleball a lot with my wife when we were first married and bought discount copies to give away to friends.

Fiasco is a dark laughter machine. Scenarios are often as ridiculous as they are violent. You will suffer. Gladly. The game requires the right crowd, all committed, but if you have that, you have gold.

Board Game: Gulo Gulo
#86
I can't find it right now, but somewhere there's a photo of me giving my oldest daughter this for Christmas '05. I have photos of that same daughter humoring me playing Battle for Moscow and War of 1812 and most recently playing Babylonia and Hearts with me. Sometimes, often, I love games because I love the people I play games with.

#82
A friend of mine that I met online and did a lot of shared work with sent this to me in the mail. I had always known about it and kinda dismissed it. A couple of days after receiving it, there was a big storm and the electric went out. We lit a lot of candles and had a big family game of Tsuro. It was a lovely evening. A year later, the power went out again. We all reached for Tsuro. It's a family tradition now.

Board Game: Imhotep
#80
I know everyone loves Codenames (it even almost made this list), but the 2016 SdJ should have gone to Imhotep. It hearkens back to the great 90s SdJ picks for me, with simple rules, no luck, and a whole heaping spoonful of meanness, plenty of constant player interaction. This is exactly what I want in a family "German Game."

Board Game: Twilight Struggle
#79
I love Twilight Struggle for the experience. I've only played nine times and know that I'm still a beginner. But maybe I like it that way? I'm not sure that I care about advanced play here, because the advanced play seems about memorizing the decks and counting cards. I understand that, but it also seems to strip the game of its soul, becoming about the mechanisms. It's weird that I feel this way because I'm very much an abstract gamer. But wargames like this often seem more about the narrative to me than anything else. Twilight Struggle made this list because I still own my old 2nd edition copy and still want to play it.

Board Game: Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation

This was presented to me as Knizia's Stratego and, sure enough, it is. Only faster and more furious. The probing can be subtle, but certain pieces movement speeds up the game considerably. Lots of sacrifices and feints capture the theme perfectly.

I was taught this by Kevin Wilson while he was developing the re-release for FFG. That was my first experience and it was amazing. I've had other amazing experiences with friends. I've also had a couple of duds in which the game was just not fun. Well, I'm still willing to give it more chances. I want to love it.
