A group of gamers in Alabama gathered for a weekend of gaming goodness.

This impromptu game orgy? was spurred by one of the gamers Michael who has what is reputed to have the only copy of Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization in the state, being able to come to Birmingham for the weekend. We all wanted to this game a try (task accomplished I might add).

Many thanks to BGG user Tygo for being a most gracious host.

I had to leave early both days, drat those family responsibilities! However, I'm starting the list with the games I remember and appropriate comments. To the other Birmingham gamers, please add any I forgot.

For much of the weekend we had 2 games going, and this list commemorates the activities.

The headliner.
Does this game live up to is reputation as the Civilization replacement?

Unfortunately for my pocketbook my answer is yes.
It has the resource management component, technology upgrades, calamities, competition for the prime items, a dollop of conflict, indirect victory scale.... The only thing it doesn't have is trading (which was my least favorite part of Civilization).

I did decently at the beginning but stalled out as I was resource short in the mid game and could never catch back up.

Farming, Hmm - that's a theme.

Hadn't seen this before, and listened to the rules explanation. I didn't get a chance to play this. Do you think my comment that I wanted to play the game, so I could rate it a 1 and cause another brouhaha on Board Game Geek had anything to do with it?
I suppose I proved that I spend way too much time on BGG!

I will say it is a good looking game It does look interesting and I would like to try it one day. (Yes, I will give it an honest rating when I do so). However, I will wait for the English version.

A set collection game with some nice twists.
Do you go for smaller collections and try to keep more shipping on the scoring track? Do you go for larger shipments and bonuses?
Definitely cannot let any player reside in the higher multipliers for too long with large shipments. I can see the runaway leader complaints about the game.

A good looking game and I like the Tea meeples. However, as a game it just seems to miss the mark. The interaction of all the shipping ends up feeling very chaotic, that is what you are doing doesn't have a significant impact on the game scoring

I Arrived as this game was finishing up. As a rule Fantasy themes do nothing for me, so I didn't mind missing it.

I would welcome comments from those who played.

A cute game that was surprisingly interesting.
Yes it is a light game with just a bit little strategy but I had fun sinking and taunting my opponents. Muahahahh

Since Tygo and I weren't doing Die Macher, a wargame was in order.
Tygo had played 1960 and Twilight Struggle so WW would be good next step up for him. We did the Annus Mirabilis scenario, and I gave him the British, since the I find the French play to be a lot more nuanced.

He handed me my head on a platter, I should have reversed the roles. I knew I was in trouble when my first 10 Indian raids resulted in 1 successful raid and a lot of dead Indians. Yes, Montcalm was able to keep Ticonderoga until 1758 but that season turned into a disaster for the French. Couple that with Wolfe taking Louisburg and landing on Quebec, surrender looked to be the only viable option.

I usually play with the advanced rules for interception, avoiding, and scouting. Those rules are critical for the French.

The British bombing raids in WWII - now that is a theme for the ole wargamer in me.
This is an interesting bluffing guessing game. As the British you need to take out some ground defenses but if you give away too much of your route the German fighters will be all over you. As the Germans you have to manage the fuel of the 110s so you can suck up the victory points on the bomber stream.
You do have to play it in two rounds and get a composite score, since the Germans are the more active player, each player should have the opportunity for both sides.

Another game where Tygo beat me like a drum. I went up the center and he ended +5 on my raid. His raid he went along the south where I had almost no flak and scored mega points.

A light auction style game. It has a bit of push you luck, with a bluffing element.
Worked well with the 5 players especially when what you had won was finally revealed to the moans or laughter of all.
