Ah, Christmas morning 2007. This is my first real Christmas as a Board Game Geek, and Santa has been particularly good. I realize that one of the great things about being a "newbie" BGG, is that there are so many great games I can receive. So, what was under your tree? Did you get a treasure? A gem or two? Or were there only lumps of coal? Feel free to add your items of elation or disappointment cry as the case may be.

My sister-in-law and her husband outdid themselves this year. I suspect they have no idea how happy they made me by adding *four* games to my small collection! The first is the classic Knizia, Samurai. My family already enjoys Carcasonne, so this should be a nice step up.

The second gift from my sister-in-law and husband is another Knizia, Through the Desert. I can't wait to see my wife and daughter get their hands on those famous "pastel camels". Personaly, having grown up on Chess (and a little Go), I'm intrigued to see how this "abstract in hiding" will catch me.

I have a family of four, but with the friends and neighbors I hope to lure into the board gaming world, I need some 5+ player games in my arsenal. Also, my teen-aged son has a certain "confrontational" bent to his game play, so while we have all enjoyed the cooperation of Bohnanza, I'm sure he would like something a bit more cut-throat. How kind of my sister-in-law and her husband to oblige. Of course, confrontation is a two-way street, so my son had better keep an eye open for dear old Dad!

Continuing with the theme of 5+ player games, my sister-in-law and her husband's final gift was the 2003 Spiel des Jahres, Alhambra. My daughter likes relatively non-confrontational building of Ticket to Ride, so my suspicion is that she will be a big fan of Alhambra. She and my wife both like the pretty tile laying of Carcassone, so this may fit both their tastes.

Now after four games that hit my bullseye, this one might be a miss. I was hoping for Tigris and Euphrates, and my wife (bless her heart) was intending to get me Tigris and Euphrates, but... The card game gets mixed reviews, so who knows, maybe my family will like it after all. T&E would have been the "most serious" game in my collection, so it might not have gone over well with my family's light game tastes.

Does it really count as a game for *me* if I wrapped Puerto Rico for my daughter? You darn well bet it does! This is the first of the Christmas haul we've played. After two games, everyone, including my mother finds Puerto Rico seriously intriguing. Personally, I've finished last both times and I can't wait to get my hands on Puerto Rico again. Now I see why this game has been number 1.

El Grande seems to be out of print (or at least really hard to find). I feel pretty lucky to score an opened but mint copy on ebay for my son. My son, riiiiight. Yes, I count El Grande as another game in *my* collection. I have a feeling my son is going to like the head-to-head area control mechanism, since he has my competitive spirit.

Yes, it happened. After all the wonderful games from my carefully researched list (Thanks, BBG!), my mother-in-law went and did it. "I know you like games, and I know you like Dilbert, so I figured you'd like this." Ah well, not everyone can be a Board Game Geek. I've got to decide whether to play this the once or twice it seems to be worth, or just quietly give it away.
