I manage a group of 10 people and am planning to put together an offsite meeting, where, amongst other things, I want to do some team building exercises. I'm thinking about using at least one board game to help these fellows learn about team work.

The interesting thing about this group is that this is the first time they're really working together - they used to be split up in three independent teams.

There are two games I have in mind and would like to hear whether or not you all think they are appropriate.

I'm also hoping to hear other suggestions along with a brief explanation of why you think they'd work for this particular gang.

Thanks, H.

This may be a long game, but I figure everyone working together to try to stop the monsters seems like just the ticket.

Yes, there's some serious conflict here, but no one can actually win on their own - alliances are critical.

This should qualify. If the human players don't cooperate, they are doomed. On the downside, (for a cooperative game - it works really well to make this the best zombie game in town) some of the players run the zombies.

This one is also all about cooperation. It is the group against the game.

This, and its superior sibling Scotland Yard, call for a team effort to find the bad guy.

Then this one is Very reminiscent of corporate America, as there is probably a traitor that will bring the group down. Okay, Corporate America probably doesn't have traitors so much as they have criminals that will take the company down with them when they are caught.

For a team building exercise you probably want something without too much down time for the participants between turns (especially if they are not game-inclined) and something that accommodates all ten people.

While Wits & wagers is not cooperative as most of the other suggestions are, it might work well. It emphasizes the point that in a group individual strengths and weaknesses are less important than the synergy between the group members. In Wits & Wagers the first thought is that you have to know trivia to win. It quickly becomes apparent, however, that winning is NOT a function of the players' knowledge of trivia but of their ability to ascertain other players' trivia strengths and weaknesses. While not a cooperative game it emphasizes the interrelatedness among group members as they work to accomplish their task.

It's quick and fun so it might be worth a shot!
