This is the weekly geeklist for the Swedish Meatball GeekChat League! Only members are to add items (please add your weekly games played); contributions from non-members are welcome.

**********************

One of the courses I teach to seniors at the school where I work is essentially a sociology class. There's bits and pieces of all sorts of disciplines in there - pscyhology, anthropology, gender studies, etc etc. It's a fun course, and the nature and structure of it allows for lots of discussion and freedom of direction in what we do, dependent on what the kids are finding interesting etc (this is unlike most of our senior courses down here, which tend to have very strict and tight curricula). Anyway, currently the unit is "intercultural communication" and I've been drawing on my linguistics background a bit but also just my fascination with language in general.

It's got me thinking about language and communication in real life, via the web, and even via this geeklist (I am still thinking about poor Laszlo and Lucas trying to work out what an Oven Mitt is!). I was going to do something along these lines when I came up in the rotation, but I'd be finished the topic with my class by then; now I'll hopefully be able to use some of your answers to prompt some discussion or at least have some extra examples of things to use as examples.

(Er, any answers you give will be used anonymously with my class, of course, if I use anything at all )

As an exercise this week I got the class to provide me with a list of words and phrases they use that they thought I wouldn't know, or at least, use. How many could you explain the meaning of, or the context in which they'd be used? (interestingly I had a class who are a year older come in after, they struggled with some, which is an indication of how quickly language changes itself!)

Many of the words/phrases listed in the first item the kids admitted they would probably not use in speech - i.e., they are far more likely to use them in text. (Of course, using them in speech would often be done ironically, and we had a bit of discussion about that!)

Are there words or phrases that you use in speech that began in text speak? Is it done ironically or not?

Words/phrases from languages other than English are of course more than welcome, desired, even, throughout this list

Okay, this is what I really want

One of the things we were looking at were words in other languages and dialects for which there is no equivalent in Australian English. German is particularly good for this, "schadenfraude" being one that we use in English, but there are many other words which haven't made the jump, even if they describe things that are part of our experience.

Can you think of words that are used in your language/dialect/region that aren't really used elsewhere as far as you know? Speakers of other languages, of which we have a few, I'm obviously interested in your answers, but I feel like the English variants across the geeklist might throw up some stuff too. I am fascinated by the many different types of sandwich and their names in the States for instance.

What about words which have one meaning in your language/dialect that have another in others?

"Pants" in Britain mean underpants/knickers etc, whereas here they mean trousers/jeans etc. (This got me into trouble more than once....)

What about words, phrases or idioms that are unique to your language/dialect/region?

I got my kids to read this:
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/jan/24/dont-bl...

And there are some beauties in the comment section as well.

Also this, which I'm sure most of you have seen:

https://ahtaitay.blogspot.com/2020/07/20-maps-that-show-how-...

Here's an australian version:

https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2014/oct/20/-sp-ma...

But I'd love to hear if any meatballs have some localised phrases/words they could share! (Words are good, but phrases more fun!)

(The Field of the Cloth of Gold is only not my entry because it was last week!)

Wow, this was a bountiful week.

Games night - many of the usual suspects

Kingdomino
7 Wonders - I won!
Ninety-Nine - this is on BGA now, neat!
Eggs of Ostrich
6 nimmt!
Coloretto

Face-to-face 2p gaming

The Field of the Cloth of Gold x4 - a pair each with Joe and Sam. What a neat little game this is! I need to write a review after diming it in a week. Joe liked it so much he fashioned his own set which looks considerably better than the real thing!

Watergate - Sam and I had been making plans for him to teach me this in the 'before times' and we finally got round to it. Super impressed! It's in the crowded 2p quick card-driven historical game niche but definitely different enough from the others I've played. I was just about to nail Nixon when he dropped the bullshit Gambit card for the second time and stole it from under me.

Letterpress - Sam beat me in three of the four rounds but I used almost all of my meagre drafted collection to make DEBRIEF and won by a point.

Extra-curricular online gaming

The Field of the Cloth of Gold x6 - a pair each (seems to be the way this goes!) with DJ and Rob from Phoenix and our own Lucas.

Mandala x3 - two with DJ and one with Rob. Really loving this one.

Voodoo Prince - lost it on the last trick!

Eggs of Ostrich - super low scoring with these dicks!

Another light week for me in contrast, work stuff again mostly.

Did have a good time teaching Innovation to my kids.
Also games of The Lost Expedition and the Grizzled. My son brought home this awful graphic novel about kangaroos fighting in WW1, full of every jingoistic cliche you could imagine. We'd been having some conversations about it through the week and he picked this one off the shelf to play which I was pleased about.

 9.5   Fresh Fish x3 (10 all-time)
7.5   The Field of the Cloth of Gold x2 NEW!
 7   Finca NEW!

I just got a new dime! That means Fresh Fish now qualifies for a Voice of Experience review (are there plans for another edition, Martin?). Anyway, I just can't play this game enough, I raised its rate to a 9.5 and to be honest the only thing preventing me from giving it a perfect 10 is seeing how will it work in person without NotJeff, who is usually the first to spot all the expropriations. We had a game without him this week and it went fine, so that part seems to be ok.

I also had two new-to-me games this week. Martin taught me The Field of the Cloth of Gold, another simple but very clever game from Tom Russell. It is a very simple game on which you have very few possible things to do and temporarily block them while there, but on every action you give your opponent something. I enjoyed it a lot and I'm certainly buying it as soon as it is available on wargamevault.

The other new-to-me game was Finca. It wasn't something that really "caught" me, but it seems clear that there's a learning curve there and experience will lead to more clever use of the rondel-jockeying. Also, I played it with four, which seems to be the player count everyone considers to be the worst.

Played my 11,111th game since the start of 2007 (as I've logged them) this last week. It was Letterpress with James and Dane. It's quite a nice word game with just some cards. They both like it.

Board Game: Above and Below

Above and Below - My 24th and 25th plays this week and the game isn't losing anything despite a limited number of little "explore" stories in the book. Marie played it again for the first time in a long time, thinking she was done with it. She liked it a lot again. The results of an explore can be fairly diverse and some things work great for you while others don't. I like having to shift with it and she embraced it this time. We had a lot of fun. Then I played it with James and Dane and the experience was great. The both love to play the game and read the explores to another player. The book provides you the scenario and you decide how to respond and roll some dice to see if you succeed or not and by how much. The game tells you what you get, but there is no further story. I started telling the rest of the story, sometimes really embellishing what happens when they recovered just 2 coins or something. Adds more creativity to the experience too. On top of all that, James has been really getting into face painting during the pandemic. He's done tons of characters and recently painted me as two-face, which was great. He was in his room for a while after we played and then came out as one of the fishfolk characters. He's getting very good.
Board Game: Dominion
Board Game: Kingdom Builder

Board Game: Res Arcana
Board Game: Race for the Galaxy

Dominion, Kingdom Builder, Res Arcana, Race for the Galaxy - Marie and I played 4 of our "go to" two player games this week. San Juan is probably the only one missing from this list and Res Arcana is a very new edition... we'll see if it lasts. We played Palazzo this week too which is another one we still enjoy... used to like it more, but it still holds as a quality two player for us. We had a 1 point final in Palazzo this week which made for an exciting finish.
Board Game: Pandemic

Pandemic - James and I took on the virulent strain with mutation as the scientist and epidemiologist. We seemed to have everything under good control until just past the halfway point when things fell apart and the purple mutation nearly took us out. We won on the second to last turn.
Board Game: Roll Player

Roll Player - I'd been working hard to get James or Dane to play this with me. They didn't like our last play. It was with 4 players and I think that caused it to drag. Dane and I played and he quite loved it as a 2 player game and wants to play again now. One of the better games I've played from the local designers and it certainly has received a lot of attention. I liked it for the good dice game it is before we got into the D&D kick. It's better now that I'm more familiar with the theme.
Board Game: Oh Hell!

Oh Hell! - When it comes to good old, basic fashioned trick-taking games, this one might be one of the best and simplest. Thinking more about it, this may be the game I'd use to teach people trick-taking if they had never played a TT game and wanted to learn the concepts. The fact that it ramps up in number of tricks from round to round sets it up as a good game for learning. I've definitely been playing more TT games since they're one of the more accessible through online interfaces. I've played Oh Hell! twice via BGA in the last month or two.

 7   Hisss x2 (56 all-time)

 8.7   Babylonia x3 (23 all-time)

Further devastating plays with Rob and Martin.

 8.1   Tikal (8 all-time)
Teaching Miska and Borcsa. I hadn't played the game for more than five years before and now it felt simpler than ever before. They quite enjoyed it and played fine, I think Miska liked it more.

 7.5   Loony Quest x2 (9 all-time)
Teaching Veronika and nordenging the game quite in the second play. I'm still rather good at drawing so I had to be disadvantaged while Veronika got some advantages. It was still too hard for her but we became even with the older kids.

 8   Der kleine Sprechdachs (9 all-time)
This game got a new life with Veronika, and with her the play length is manageable. Fun (brain) activity.

 6.8   La Boca x2 (3 all-time)
With Miska and Borcsa. (could be 4 plays since as 3-player play would be too short otherwise, we played two turns in each game.) While it wasn't bad it's not really a game I would call a keeper, however I think it stays in the collection as it might help in learning perspectives.

 8.5   Yōkaï no Mori x2 (44 all-time)
Now I have no chance against Miska.

 7.3   Rhino Hero (9 all-time)

7.3   The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (16 all-time) with
7.4   The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (16 all-time)

Sailing smooth, we finished with 34 points; next time I will play level 2 with them. Finally they got the inspiration to start reading the book (Miska is reading it now and Borcsa is eagerly waiting when he finishes it); I told them they can't watch any of the six movies before they read both books (I think Borcsa is not ready to read LotR yet).

 7.5   Spot it! (57 all-time)
 7   Orchard (56 all-time)

 8   Onitama (10 all-time)
 8.1   Onitama: Sensei's Path (2 all-time)

See my comments at Yōkaï no Mori.

6.5   Monster High: Potworrrnie wciągająca gra! (69 all-time)
 7   The Little Orchard (46 all-time)

 7   Circus Flohcati (62 all-time)

More than six years ago we started the tradition of playing this one with Miska in the morning while the girls were sleeping on vacation. Now we played it in the evening while the girls were put to bed

 7.5   Blue Moon City (13 all-time) with
 7.7   Blue Moon City: Expansion Tile Sets 1 & 2 (10 all-time)

Another game the older kids learned. Usually we play 2-player with Saci and the endgame is very tight. Now I finished way earlier than the others and Saci ended up very last.

 7   Drachenhort (17 all-time)
Another game Veronika learned. Beginner's luck - she won by 37:32:31:30...

 8.5   Agricola (Revised Edition) (9 all-time)

 10.   Go x5 (99 this year)

I won both of my mini online league matches, both quite handily. It's strange, it really does seem like my multi-month hiatus has led to a real improvement in my level. This was emphasized by the second match, where I destroyed my opponent, a regular league player I'd regularly split close games against.

Is this a reminder of the power of rest? Of stepping away and letting things settle?

Nonetheless, my teacher wasn't happy with me. In fact he was quite disappointed actually, and said he's rather see me play more "proper" even if I lost. He challenged me to stop being overly aggressive, to know when I need to play more defensive. In these particular games, I still won (big) because my opponents weren't strong enough to punish my vulnerabilities, but that only means I will gain bad habits if I take the wrong lessons from these wins.

So that helped puncture the risk of me getting a big head. Like a good sensei, the better one gets, the higher his expectations.

(Also played 3 other games on KGS.)

 10   Potion Explosion (41 all-time)

In a park with Liz

The day I learnt that I really do not own many two player games without cards. It was a bit windy and I did not want my pieces to fly away.

8   Pent-Up (9 all-time) - When I hit ten plays, I will have to actually buy this, rather than continue to play with Blokus Duo pieces. Hopefully, the board state is easier to read with the official pieces. But with the value of my dollar and the cost of shipping, this 22 piece game will be one of the most expensive games I own. I know I am paying for quality of play and design/development, but with so few pieces in the game... I get a gut reaction.

That being said, I never play Blokus Duo, as it does not hold a candle to Pent-Up.

10   Patchwork (25 all-time) - Have not played this in so long. I forgot how much fun it is. Next time I play I will try to ignore the 7x7 and force an endgame where only pieces that can not be taken by someone who has the 7x7. Curious to see if that is a thing.

Yeah, I'm not the best at updating.

Anyway, a few more games of this including busting out the expansion. It remains pleasant, and basically does exactly what we wanted it to do -- it's the light, fun dice-rolling of Machi Koro, but more interesting and slightly more complex.

Also Bora Bora, where Debbie destroyed me by dominating the God track.

I bought and played Roll Player with Jon. Boy oh boy, was this game boring. There was barely any meaningful interaction, and the decisions weren't hugely interesting either (you have a choice of three random dice and, although there are lots of decisions about what you can do with them, at the end of the day, you have three random dice and it has point salad scoring).

About halfway through, we decided that Jon would rather finish some work while we had childcare than continue playing. Straight onto the trade pile.

We also played My City several times. Despite being a very simple case of putting polyomino tiles into a grid, it was remarkably satisfying, especially with the legacy mechanic that changes the scoring mechanism and makes everything harder/easy as the game goes on. A worthy SdJ nominee.
