Not many new games for me this month... with just 4 new ones: Munchkin, Star Trek Trivia Game, In the Year of the Dragon and Antler Island.

I really wasn't taken with Munchkin as a game, though the RPG comedy aspect of it was good to begin with. The Star Trek trivia game was hard, even though I consider myself a Star Trek fan....

Antler Island just beat out Year of the Dragon for me, because it was light, fun and packed with innuendo opportunities. Year of the Dragon was an excellent game though, with lots of interesting decisions and plenty of competition in our 4 player game.

I had the good fortune of getting to play this classic this month. It was a three-player game and I think it probably shines with more. But it was still an excellent play - challenging with tough abstracted mechanics while still feeling thematic.

This was, for me, a pretty productive month for new games. Borderlands was the clear winner over Traders of Genoa, Cosmic Encounter, Citadels, Cannes, and No Thanks.

Not a lot of new games in December, but this is the clear winner.

New this month:

1960: The Making of the President
6 nimmt!
Prophecy
Race for the Galaxy
Ricochet Robots

Edit: At a New Year's Eve party, I played The Game of Life: Twists & Turns. It's probable that I played GoL as a kid at some point (though I don't have any specific recollection), but I suppose this is different enough to count as new anyway. Either way, needless to say, my best game of the month did not change.

December has been a real busy month, but not a busy month for game playing. The games we did play get a chance to play were great.

Race for the Galaxy is my favorite new to me game and is climbing to my personal favorite list.

Other new to me games:
Apples to Apples
Hannibal vs. Carthage
Original Monopoly

Played twice, both times with four. Quick, fun game with interesting but constrained decision-making. And nice bits (albeit not to scale).

Also enjoyed Ubongo Extrem and Animalia -- which I gave to my husband and daughter as Xmas gifts. (Thank you Robbirob!!)

This month, the best new game is Railways of the World. A great economic game of trying to fulfill orders. This was a lot of fun, but I had a hard time playing with it because of the board warping. Also, my kids are still a wee bit too young for this yet. They did great, but there is a lot of subtle strategies in this game that I think they need to still grow into. For me, this is a great game with its only two drawbacks being set-up and tear down time and the warping issue.

Loopin' Louie - My kids received this for Christmas and they have been playing this non-stop. What a great gift. I'm glad I purchased a bunch of these this year for all my nephews and nieces.

GiftTRAP - Purchased this for my Mother-in-Law. This is a great, great game for someone that likes to shop and/or receive/give gifts. Although this is more of a woman's game, we had some fun dialog regarding this one and it was nice to see this one go over so well.

Hoity Toity - This game was a blast with my sister and brother. We played five player and it went over very well. It provided a lot of laughs and fun.

Manhattan - I only had a chance to play this one once this month, but it was fun. It makes for a quick family game during a weeknight. Look forward to playing this one more. My kids will probably like the Godzilla variants as well.

6 nimmt! - Purchased this game for larger groups. There seems to be a lot of luck involved in this one. I bought it for a large group but it seems that the more people you add the more chaotic it gets. At least it may keep a large group entertained for a bit.

Halli Galli - Recieved this from my Secret Santa. This was on my wish list and fulfills a fun niche. Its a fun speed game that my kids can enjoy.

YINSH - One of two, two-player games purchased for my wife and I. She isn't very big into abstracts, but this one went well. It's Othello and Connect Four themes were familiar to her. This game is a good one to play one-on-one with my kids too.

Ticket to Ride: Switzerland - Second of two, two-player games purchased for my wife and I. We both enjoy Ticket to Ride so this one was nice. There is a lot of confrontation in this one so it has a much different feel. Very happy with the game play.

Go Away Monster! - This was a birthday gift for my 3-year old daughter last month. Had a chance to play our first game this month. Its a nice, simple game that was fun to talk about with her.

Battleground: Crossbows & Catapults War Chest Starter Set - Purchased this cross-bows and catapults set for my 6-year old son for his birthday last month. We play a modified game without the people. Its a simple, fun time.

The Farming Game Kids - Our daughter received this from her Aunt. Its a simple game that teaches counting, color matching, and simple chart reading. Much better than Candy Land!

A surprisingly active December for me, with almost 30 games logged. In December, I tend to not play very many "new to me" games, as I am presenting many games that I already think are excellent to my in-laws over the Christmas break. Bigger "new to me" months are November (BGG.Con/new Essen titles) and January (Christmas presents). This December was a little different, as I did get in a few new titles: Loopin' Louie, Niagara, Blokus, Heroscape and Agricola. Agricola easily stands head and shoulders above the other "new to me" games played this month. Agricola was played once with five players and also saw several solitaire plays, once I made a travel solitaire game for myself (waiting on the English edition I pre-ordered). It has depth, a lot of replay potential, and it plays well with a wide range of players. I see this one getting a lot of table time over the next few years.

I played Thebes a few days before Christmas and really enjoyed it. It has a gorgeous board and bits and is so much fun to play. I think the rule book in a few instances could be clearer. Our game seemed to take about 15 minutes too long for such a game, but I imagine that was because it was the first time we played it. Oh yes, it does have tons of luck, but I like luck!

According to the extended stats I played 14 new games in December, but I can't figure out all of them. I only came up with 11.

Bang! The Bullet! really shouldn't count. I ended up buying it only because I didn't have High Noon and had credit at Boulder.

I played a two player game of Magdar and was unimpressed. But, I think it was because it was two player. I think it will play better with 4.

Urban Legends I picked up from Tanga because I thought it would be interesting. My wife has a minor in folklore and we enjoy Urban Legends. But, I didn't really realize that the cards in the game were just roll again for the outcome and not somewhat trivia based questions. The worst part is my daughter likes the game.

Myst was again a game I picked up with hopes to play with my wife. She likes puzzles. But, I could never get her to play with me. I finally played with the kids and now I hope to finish a trader with it.

Jericho is a simple card game. Can't say anything good or bad about it.

International Oilman has such a neat board. I wish there was a game around it. I had hoped there would be more to the building and the drilling but it all boiled down to pure luck. But I guess that's the oil business.

En Garde! is a simple card game. I don't think there will be much long term to this game.

Race for the Galaxy I played once. I look forward to playing it again, but I wasn't highly impressed with it. It didn't help that the person teaching kept trying to teach it by comparing it to San Juan. A game I am only marginally interested in playing and don't really know well enough to be able to learn a new game by being told it's play liek such and such in San Juan.

Notre Dame was a good game. I've only played it once and really want to play it some more. It's probably going to hit the table a lot over the next 6 months (at least I hope).

Clue - The Great Museum Caper was a gift from one of my gaming friends. I wondered why he picked it. I checked it wasn't on my wishlist, my want list or a tag I use for games I'm researching. But, I had been thinking about it. It turned out to be fun.

But, the winner this month. It Pirates on the High Seas. Ok, it's just because it's cool looking. It' December, the month of families, so I should go with a family game and not a gamers game. It's actually a bit to simple for a lot of play, but it's fun with the kids.

After lots of new games in November, I only managed two new ones in December: Darjeeling and Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries.

After a first play where one player ran away with the game, subsequent plays of Darjeeling have been much closer, in part because when teaching the game I now emphasise the potential for players to make a big recurring score and that other players need to respond when that happens.

There's a nice balancing act between collecting tile sets to score big for yourself, jumping in quick to grab a juicy demand bonus, and reducing the score of an opponent's set.

The only other new game was Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries, which was OK. I've only had a couple of 2-player games but I think I prefer Nordic Countries to Switzerland - I'm not sure about the Swiss map's country-connecting routes.

Power Grid is, by far, the best new game to me in December. I owned a copy for years before I ever got around to playing it. I regret not playing it sooner, but it was well worth the wait. Great auctions, lots of tension, and tons of strategy. After one play, I am tentatively rating Power Grid as tied for my favorite game with Caylus. I already bought two expansion map boards.

Other new games to me in December:

PitchCar - A fun flicking game. I prefer Crokinole, but when you have 5 or more players, this is the winner.

Sleuth - A good deduction card game, but DON'T try it with more than 5 players.

Formula Dé - Luck heavy but fun racing game.

HeroScape - Luck heavy but fun fighting game.

An eye-opening game, beautifully produced. It is inevitably compared to Puerto Rico, Caylus, and Pillars of the Earth, but it is not a clone of any of these. Many paths to victory, and difficult decisions on nearly every turn. Delightful!

Container is also a strong contender, but so far we've played it only once and with just three players. It's fascinating, and we're eager to play it again with more players.

Wow. A truly sad month for me and new games .

This kids game wins, and it's not even close.

This is a good game to play with kids 5 and up. it's simple, has some decisions, and only takes 10-15 minutes to play.

The only other new games I played were Scattergories & Scene It? Disney Second Edition. Both are fine for what they are, and are good for a play or 2.

Best new game to me for the month of December. I picked this because
1) I gave the game to my son for Christmas.
2) I played the game on Christmas eve day with my son and we had a great time playing the game.
3) This game is the best of the command card system, I love the directions and the bits. The additional game movement cards to explain movement at a glance really help keep the game moving without lots of looking back at the rule book.

The actaul game wasn't the greatest - Its a touch more complicated than I thought and I was playing with a bunch of non-gamers, but what I saw I very much liked!!!

Seems pretty different to Condioterre - especially when played in team style.

Finally a month where I played several new games. RftG has blown us away recently, hitting the table quite frequently. Other new hits this month:
Aqua Romana
Prophecy
Key Harvest
Kingsburg

Ruse & Bruise was merely "decent"

Another slow month for new games as tidying up work and preparing for the festive season took priority (I can't believe I just said that). shake

3 New games in Blue Moon, Cribbage and Kingsburg.

I am really enjoying Kingsburg as a light Euro with dice but Blue Moon the card game has to take the prize.

Such an elegant game with deceptively intricate card playing options. Knowing when to fight and when to retreat, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each race and managing your hand make this game a winner all the way.
