This is the next installment of my State of the Game series, chronicling my gaming exploits twice a year. For the previous edition, please see: http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/18702

I learned 10 new games during this period, and I replayed many old favorites.

I received the '05 reprint as a New Year's present, so this became my first played game of '07. Lots of fun.

This is a great lunchtime game for two. Just remove the following cards first:

1x I'll Have Someone Bring That Out to You
1x Somebody Loses an EYE
1x Blindfold
1x Mop

19 plays, Bell-Bottomed Badassses on the Mean Streets of Funk
19 plays, Grave Robbers From Outer Space
13 plays, Scurvy Musketeers of the Spanish Main
11 plays, Cannibal Pygmies in the Jungle of Doom
11 plays, Grave Robbers from Outer Space 2: Skippy's Revenge

I've noticed that game time increases with the number of decks. Any ideas or variants to decrease game length during epic sessions?

This has very interesting rules for drawing cards, and for triggering the endgame, but at 45 minutes it takes far too long for a beer-and-pretzels game.

I picked up some handfuls of starter decks from the game shop's bargain bin. Tried this once. The moral of the story... interminably long with untuned decks. I tried my hand at deckbuilding, but I've not yet tested the results of those efforts.

Game design question:

In one of my designs, I have included a card type called Trap. Traps are single-use events that have negative consequences for the player who draws them. Traps must be played immediately when drawn. Their function in the design is to add some risk to card drawing, and to fetter runaway leaders.

However, revealing that one has drawn a Trap is entirely on the honor system. A dishonest player could keep Traps in their hand unseen and unknown for the rest of the game. Is this a design flaw, or a player flaw? I've tried other options, but nothing is as effective at adding drama as the current method.

After mulling it around for a while, I finally started phase II of my famous Fluxx experiment: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/105929. The continuing study will investigate an element that many commentators asked about... what about obvious plays? I then started running 200 more data points, just like the last experiment except with "the random player instantly making any winning plays he sees, and avoiding any obvious losing plays he sees."

Cerulean's unsolicited rant wrote:

Pluto is not a planet. Pluto never was a planet. It just happened to be the first noticed object of what turned out to be a whole bunch of objects just beyond Neptune. We've learned a lot about our the edges of our solar system since 1930, and I'm ready to give up the magic number nine that I was told since childhood in the interests of accuracy.

Exhibit A: Pluto does not follow the trend of gas giants preceding it far from the sun.

Exhibit B: Pluto's orbit is not coplanar with the other eight accepted planets, leading me to consider that Pluto did not form from the solar system's disk of gases with the rest of the planets.

Exhibit C: Pluto's orbit is not concentric with the other eight.

Exhibit C: We've only observed 75 years of Pluto's estimated 248 year orbit. I'm not yet convinced it really has a stable orbit.

Exhibit D: Pluto's moon, Charon, is as large as it is.

Exhibit E: Pluto is smaller than several objects in the asteroid belt, yet none of them were planets before.

Exhibits F & G: Sedna and Eris, respectively, the first of what will undoubtedly be many more such discoveries.

If you're into Beer & Pretzels or "take that" card games, you owe it to yourself to check out Burn Rate.

Each player in Burn Rate is a dot-com startup circa 1998. With a pile of venture capital, each firm hires employees for the labor pool, and develops Bad Ideas like Butler Hosted Search Engine or Online Postage Stamps. It's not a matter of if you'll lose money, but how fast, hence the phrase "burn rate". The last player with any money left wins.

Seamless meshing of theme and mechanics, very simple rules, minimal text to read, scarily apt a reflection of real life, and thankfully back in print, it's one of my Top Three favorite designs in the B&P category, along with Give Me the Brain! and Chrononauts.

It failed the Let's Play Again test. After two plays, I didn't find any merit or motivation to play it again, and back in the box it went. Players completed their goals at about the same pace no matter what actions they had taken, suggesting that goal completion had little to do with actual skill or choice. The hidden goals changed too frequently to be worth guessing, and half of them were completed unintentionally anyway. We played many cards out of turn, and players just threw down a bunch of cards "for the fun of it", not a a strategic ploy but just to mess things up. FLUXX has equally indecisive victory conditions, but it does take more forethought and has more interesting card effects. If you like hidden goals, Dungeonville uses them much more effectively.

This embodies the worst of roll-and-move. It's Life without the dramatic storyline. It's Mousetrap without the Rube Goldberg contraption. It's the kind of game your father hands you to keep you busy when he's planning a surprise party and wants you all to hide in the next room.
