Well...I'm hoping this doesn't turn into any nasty arguments but I think this is a useful list. I don't want to bad-mouth or hurt anybodies feelings I just wanted to see if anybody else had this happen. There are always games that get hyped up and then slowly fade and fall down the ratings(Dungeon Twister-for example-which I love) as the hype dies down.

Do you have any games you felt that way about this year?

P.S. I couldn't find a list like this already but if there is one please point me to it and I will remove this one. I don't want to flood the market with Holiday round-up lists.

I found that it was a reasonably fun game. I think I was a little turned off by the jokey handling of mass-murder. Stupid me, I thought this was sort of a fictional Sherlock Holmes game.

The game-play is good but not super revolutionary but has the feel of a game that could get played out pretty quick.

Pretty fun light game, though, and I still rated it a 7.

I'm hesitant to add this one because I have only played it twice and I would still rate it a solid 8. I was just a little disappointed because I bought into the hype and was expecting the greatest game of all time. And the theme is absolutely riveting.

My main issues:
1. It felt like a lot of number-crunching with the electoral votes.
2. Seems like it's almost always best to play events if their good for you so it felt kind of scripted.
3. At this point it still seems like a lot of luck of the draw(that may change as I play more).
4. I just don't think I like this genre. I like-but don't love-the card driven aspect. It's the area control or area majority-something like that. TtD and Go were also disappointing to me as well-and there's something similar that I can't quite put my finger on. I can't quite explain it though.

Like I say, this one might change. I can definitely see why it's so well thought of. I am very interested in it and will play it a few more times before I rate it for sure. I just wasn't as blown away by it as I thought I would be.

I cannot believe they could use great rondel mechanics to make game this boring. I expected at least good economy game and got mediocre economy game with driest of all themes.

Of all three rondel games (Antike, Imperial, Hamburgum), Antike is great, Imperial is magnificent but Hamburgum is almost bad just because it is so boring.

I'd never played a game with this kind of mechanic, but my little brother had lots of "choose your own adventure" books which I thought were kinda cool.

This OTOH was stultifying. I don't drink coffee, but Drakon had me wishing for an IV of the stuff: repetitive, eventless, anti-strategy.

Nothing wrong with the game: played smoothly, easy to learn, lots of cards. But it just was too 'gamey' for me. I can't have children until I draw the right tile, but the cows and pigs can? Why can't I plow my field if player A did this turn? And I got NO sense of the era, or hardships of such an occupation: there are no taxes, wars, plagues, infant deaths. All very clean, sweet, and sanitized. Also not a great fan of the art, although I appreciate the enormous number of drawings.

Not bad, but awfully procedural and unthemed, and also not as deep as some of the more long-lived mainline, abstracted Euros. Not something that I could ever see myself getting excited about.

I was pretty excited to play this, but it wasn't explained well (nobody's fault--long story), and it was somewhat confusing. I will play it at least two more times before forming a strong opinion, but I just don't think this is my type of game.

The illustrations are cool, and I wanted it to be more fun that it was. The mechanics are rich enough that the theme fades away as soon as you start playing. Again, this isn't a bad game, just not the game I was hoping for. I think I'm more of a Galaxy Trucker kind of guy.

I remain very impressed with Caylus and thought this might be a good substitute when I don't quite have the time. (I know this came out in 2006 but it really only made it to Australia by 2007.)

Apart from looking nice it didn't feel like much of a game at all. I felt like I was just trying to manipulate a game engine to generate victory points. This was a game were mechanics overrode theme for me. Maybe I should have read the book first. But if was going to read a book before I played a game then I'd play something from GMT...

There was no sense of actually building anything or seeing anything develop (compare Caylus with its expanding village or contributions to the castle). The building of the Cathedral was the biggest anti-climax - totally unrelated to what I did on my turn. I could have stacked raisins or thrown all my men in a Shogun dice tower and the Cathedral would have still been just as built. This was at best a fiddly timing counter.

I do concede that while I don't think this is much of a game it is much more appropriate for newer people and may just be the half-way step to get them playing the real thing...

After writing this I'll crawl under a rock to avoid public execution.

Allthough technically from 2006 I count this as a 2007 game. Nobody will be able to argue if it was hyped or not so at least you'll have to give me that.

Concerning gameplay. I just can't get into this game which I thought I would love when I first read about it. The game just moves too slow because of all the maneuvering to keep the formations intact. I hate the colorcoded damage system as it seems counter intuitive. I hate the magic system and find the magical spells too powerfull and too dependend on the luck of the draw. I would much rather play Memoir any time.

So to conclude, I find Battlelore a decent game but it certainly did not live up to my expectations.

I'll leave now.ninja

One of my favorites before I saw it on the Spiel07.
I had high expectations before the first play.
I played it and afterwards I even bought it. The first play was okay, but didn't catched me.
Looked a bit like a mixture of "Puerto Rico" and "Pillars of the earth" to me. But as I said, it didn't cought me right away - so I thought its genius might catch me later on, when I see more details on strategy...

After a couple of plays it still don't get me... all the moves look more or less irrelevant - as long as you send your goods to the ships.
Deep tactical or strategical decisions are yet to be searched in this, haven't found them yet and I am not expecting them to pop up before me anymore...

...i'm disappointed of this one. Didn't live up to the expectations I had.

After being really excited about picking up this classic Spiel Des Jahres winner, I was really disappointed when I discovered this game just wasn't that much fun. Everyone else I played this game with seemed to come to the same conclusion: It's an interesting brain teaser without much interaction with other players, but the overall playing experience is more frustration than fun. I will have to sell my copy.

I really expected to love this game. The theme was really cool. I love card games. It smelled like a winner to me. But the rules seemed strange (the Hoplite, the guy holding the spear, can't attack????) and the scoring was complicated and real mathematical. Most of the time it seemed like your entire army gets wiped out every round, and by the last round, you have virtually no cards left, you can barely throw a shoe at your enemies. It just didn't feel very fun to me, and my gaming friends seemed to agree. Oh well, Asmodee redeemed themselves big time with Ca$h n Gun$, so all is forgiven.
