I'll start the "weekend" description with our weekly Thursday nights at Jim's and continue until today(1-1-8) when the weeekend guests went home after shovelling the eight inches of snow from the driveway so the car could get out.

It was a nice end for a good year of gaming.

Jim, Ken and I picked our way through this one. Ken and I kept trading areas. I managed to win the consulship the first election, but before the second one, Jim took his ninth area to win it.
I am mixed on this one. I wouldn't mind trying it again, but suspect that it's not a game that will appeal strongly to me. For the last few years, negotiation games haven't fired me up much.

We pulled this one out next and Ken proved most proficient at passing his genes to the next generation of deer.
I really want to like this one, but it's still in the undecided area after three plays. The flexibility of the X isn't enough to prevent effectively losing a whole turn if a fight goes against you. I wonder how it would play if one could play their X and the next number (thus giving up an action overall) to do any action?

This one got played twelve times from Thursday to Tuesday, so I'll list it here as first occurrence.
Ken got his first win with a mixed, but heavy on consuming strategy.
I will probably write a redundant review on this one, but suffice it to say that I first played this game on Dec. 6 and have logged 28 plays.

I picked this one up during Z-man's recent sale and introduced it to Ken and Jim for a closer. Ken pushed his win streak to 3 with a convincing victory hauling trash.
I am still on the fence with this one, too. It's cute, but not sure it has staying power. THere's lots of dealing cards out that is a bit distracting.

Friday, Hanson taught me how to play his new Xmas present. We played with Red starter set against blue. It's an ok version of chess. I'll play it some more, because Hanson really enjoys it. Not sure if it will grow on me more or not.

The last Saturday of the month means ROBA! We got there just after the one o'clock startup due to a trip to the library on the way.
Tom, John, Greg, JR and Charley wanted to give this a whirl, so we set it up. Then Tom made up a bunch of "balancing" rules most if which I think are silly. Briefly, the changes were to allow some vetos with the initial card deal and to bid for all positions in the first auction. These seemed somewhat redundant and none were vetoed anyway. I like the bidding for seating order. The other tweak was intended to slow down the game a little. All shares above 5 were assessed a two VP hit instead of the normal one VP. I am not a fan of this one, but it didn't make a difference in the end results anyway. Greg proved to be the best tycoon at the table.

Russ and Alan had arrived from Milwaukee shortly after the games started. Alan jumped into the next game of RRT, but Russ and I say down with Bill and Justin to try this one out (another acquisition from the Z-man sale). We played a "learning game" that I swiped by being the only CEO to loot the "fund." In the rematch Russ rode nine shares to a convincing win. We played this a few more times over the weekend, too. This is another interesting design that has me on the fence. It's only a 20-30 minute game and has a lot of flexility in the starting position. It appeared that there might have been only one strategy (buy a ton of one company) and whoever got hot dice will win, but we've seen some success with other strategies, so this one will come out a few more times at least.

John D had picked this one up and wanted to play it. John K, Tom and I sat down to learn it. (Not a straightforward process) While we were going through the rules, John S showed up and we were off.
In this game, you pay guards (currency) to the other players for the right to "tax" a city. After everyone has a city, taxes in the form of goods, horses and guards are collected. The goods are taken to town and exchanged for VP and for influence (cards) in three areas that will pay VP at the end. Repeat six times and see who has the most VP.
I think I like it, but will try it a few more times before ordering. John S proved to be the wiliest merchant that day.

After cleaning up a bit at ROBA, we headed home, warmed up some soup for dinner and started with RftG with Alan, Russ, Hanson and I.
After that, Russ, Alan and I tried this one. We managed to get in a death spiral so we all went bankrupt. We put this one away and played another RftG before calling it a night.
Container is an interesting design that forces coopetition (Thanks for word, JC.). I am also not convinced that it works three player. My two five player games have been much more enjoyable. Another one with me on the fence.

After the fairly late night, we were a little slow getting up, but made it to Ken's around noon. Jim hadn't arrived, so we played a RftG and Ken extended his winning streak. Then Jim arrived and we settled down to a game of Scepter. The others were patient as I stumbled through the fun to read, but hard to find info, rule book and we started off. Jim had an early lead, but Alan wound up with three Sentinels and had a convinving margin of victory.
I enjoy this game, but usually would prefer to fill four hours of gaming with other games.
I called to check on the home front and we decided to head home. Lisa started the wonderful lasagna that Alan had brought and we enjoyed that when we got home.

After dinner, we lured Zandra from in front of her online manga with a Japanese based game. Zandra, Hanson, Russ, Alan and I played masks influencing earth through dancer avatars.
I won the first and Hanson won the second in a couple of close games.
In this game, each avatar has a special power, each position in the turn order has a special power and the avatars go to a location that has a unique game effect. By the second game, the turn sequence was internalized and seemed natural.

Next we decided to run barber shops in the old west.
In this one, each player is a barber that decides how to spend his time, either training, working or panning for gold. The barber that accumulates the most gold wins this one. I plan to do a review on this one soon. I've enjoyed each game of this, but it's had a mixed reception with my fellow players.
After this, we played a five player Container and Zandra proved to be the best shipper in the bunch. After a couple more RftG's we called it a night.

We were up relatively early Monday and after a quick RftG, Alan and I defeated Russ and Hanson by taking down the boss. Alan was defeated and I had one point left when the boss fell.
Hanson really enjoys this one and the rest of us enjoy it. If it were just a bit shorter, it would see more table time.

After some pizza, Alan, Russ and I joined Quinn for a game of Mario Party on the Wii. I think I could enjoy this game if there was less "cool animation" between the mini-games. However, it's always fun to get Quinn involved in a game. We then cleansed our palate with an RftG.

Just before midnight, we roped Zandra into a game of this.

The first time we tried this, we gave up on it. We had missed the rule about removing five dice from the round when a building collapses.
After a break to watch the ball drop, we completed this game. For the last round we left out ten dice and made it the whole round without a collapse until the takeover.
