Dune - $34.97
Board Game: Dune
A board game collection needs an experience game. You aren't going to top this value. Twilight Imperium? Don't blow your entire budget. You CANNOT get this scale for this price point anywhere else.

Hansa Teutonica: Big Box - $34.97
Board Game: Hansa Teutonica: Big Box
A collection isn't complete without a eurogame. And I want to get right into that interactive slug-fest old-school euro-feeling. Forget about the big box. We don't even need the extra maps. Hansa has got it all.

Innovation - $13.97
Board Game: Innovation
The value on this pick is absolutely insane. This game has near infinite replayability in one box. It works wonders at 2, and flexes to 3 and 4 if needed. You can play 15 games and not see a full 1/3 of the higher-age cards. The joy in Innovation is discovering an amazing combo that uses a card you previously thought was garbage. So much to explore. This collection was built around having Innovation.

Codenames - $13.97
Board Game: Codenames
Codenames flexes up and down. Thinky 4-player tryhard game night? Codenames. Party game night? Codenames while yelling at each other. Codenames is an amazing game that rounds out this collection.

Grand Total - $97.88

Troyes - $47.99
Board Game: Troyes
Best euro game of all time and never gets repetitive thanks to the variety of the activity and event cards plus the incredible tension and player interaction. Giving half my budget to this game was not a consideration I took lightly, but thinking of my collection without Troyes made me realize just how much I want to play it again and again and again.

Sixes - $16.94
Board Game: SiXeS
My collection MUST have party party party, and while this isn’t my favorite party game, it ALWAYS delivers with any group of people—gamer or non-gamer—and always spawns unsolvable unending notorious arguments.

Innovation - $13.97
Board Game: Innovation
Endless replayability. I’ve played Innovation hundreds of times and DESPERATELY want to play it hundreds more. No two plays have been the same. I STILL discover new combos and crazy outcomes. AND LOOK AT THAT PRICE. This was an obvious first pick for me and will be in any collection I own of any size as long as I'm allowed to spend at least $13.97.

Coloretto - $10.47
Board Game: Coloretto
Must have for my collection because my family loves it, but it's also a perfect way to start a game night or break up a couple of heavy games. It's delightful every time.

Hanabi - $7.77
Board Game: Hanabi
My collection needs a co-op. And what better choice than this comfort classic. Another one that I've never tired of playing, and I love that it fills so many wants: thinky plus wonderfully frustrating communication breakdowns plus so much tension for such a small box AND SUCH A SMALL PRICE.

Biblios- $20.79
Board Game: Biblios

Couldn't restart my collection with anything less than the greatest board game of all time, Biblios. You wanna talk about bang for your buck? Drafting, auction, push your luck, set collection, hand management...it's all here! And all in a book-sized, 45 minute package. My first pick, no doubt.

Arboretum- $13.97
Board Game: Arboretum

It may be boring, but I couldn't help but make my second game in the rebuilt collection my second favorite game of all time. Biblios's meaner younger brother. When you're looking for a little more edge in an even smaller package.

The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine- $10.47
Board Game: The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine

The newest game on my list and the only co-op entry. Hard to beat the price and I LOVE the interesting twist on trick taking games.

Race for the Galaxy- $24.47
Board Game: Race for the Galaxy

Spending almost a quarter of my budget on a relatively old card game might seem strange but I'm very new to Race for the Galaxy and immediately fell in love with it. I wanted this collection to mainly focus on interactive experiences, but Race is a game I really want to learn and get better at.

The Estates- $27.97
Board Game: The Estates

My biggest spend is for the game that ALWAYS gets my heart racing. Small rule set, huge impactful decisions. Rarely has a game made my heart race so much that I LITERALLY felt it thumping in my chest and The Estates has done that a number of times. Always exhilarating.

Are You A Robot?- $1.57

Sidereal Confluence: Trading and Negotiation in the Elysian Quadrant - $48.97
Board Game: Sidereal Confluence

I'm starting this off with the biggest and splashiest game on my list. In a lot of ways, my choices pivoted around including this. It's big. It's got a lot of versatility in player count. And it's going to feel completely different every time you play it. Having my list without it just felt wrong.

Blue Lagoon - $20.97
Board Game: Blue Lagoon

It's hard to beat Blue Lagoon for value, $20 gets you a boxed board game, one that stretches in a lot of different directions. It's got accessibility, it's got style, and it can be mean. It's got some of that Go flavour that's going to see your repeat plays elevate higher and higher.

Twice as Clever! - $14.47
Board Game: Twice as Clever!

2020 taught me the value of having a solid solo game in your arsenal, and they don't get more solid than Twice as Clever! Not only that but it also feels pretty different in multiplayer, where the dice drafting becomes much more interactive. Puzzly filler, short and sweet.

The Resistance: Avalon - $13.97
Board Game: The Resistance: Avalon

There's no way this list wasn't gonna have The Resistance on it. While these days I'd recommend sticking with the Dystopian Universe edition, Avalon edges it on value. For my money (all $13.97 of it) this is still the game to beat in the social deduction space.

Ultra Pro Standard American Card Sleeves - $1.57

Rejecting the premise it would need to be in print given the huge number of used games out there that are available, based on the prices I have paid over time I would put together a package of:

Divine Right (found for $14)
Combat Commander ($25)
Magic Realm ($2)
Titan ($20)
Civilization ($12)

and have $27 to still play with... wonder if I can find a Republic of Rome for this somewhere...

Using the prices from gamenerdz.

Schotten Totten: 11.99$
Onitama: 16.97$
Viticulture Essential Edition: 44.97$
Race for the Galaxy: 24.47$
Total: 98,4$

Schotten Totten is excellent value. One of the best quick two player games. Onitama is also a great two player game and currently on sale. Viticulture is the best Euro (imo), plays quickly and also solos well. A bit pricey on that site (I got mine for 33 Euro iirc but don't know the current exchange rate). RftG is amazing and plays different player counts well. Scratches a completely different itch than the rest.

Overall I want some diversity, games that will never leave my collection and most importantly games that can get to the table and be played many times.

100$ is less than I expected. Only really leaves room to pick one good "big" game (Viticulture in my case).

$99.97 on GameNerdz whenever it gets restocked. Why have all the games when I can have THE game! Hopefully I can use Mark’s trading methods to get rid of it to someone with the removable stickers for something nice after it’s run it’s course.

My actual list is probably something like:
Terraforming Mars - $41.97
My favorite game, can’t really imagine my collection without it.
Dominion (Second Edition) - $31.47
I would like a deck builder and a conflict game to round out the collection but I’m not sure a way to fill both slots. I’ll choose the OG deckbuilder for now to fill the spot.
The Resistance: Avalon - $13.97
Party/social deduction slot as well as being one of the best, if not the best, in the genre.
The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine - $10.47
Haven’t actually played this game, but the reviews combined with the price point are hard to argue against and I don’t have a co-op.

Total = $97.88

Modern Art $23.99

One of my favorite games, I own 3 different versions. It combines beautiful art, with simple mechanisms, and constant player interaction.

Arboretum $13.97
External image

Another favorite, the art is gorgeous and deceptively mean. The rules are also fairly easy to teach and scales well.

Codenames $13.97
External image

Sometimes you need a solid perennial party game. This game is always a hit when I introduce it to non-gamers and I enjoy thinking of clues.

Blue Lagoon $20.97
External image

Knizia is great (see Modern Art), and this one is another hit with me that has the art, mechanics, and player interaction.

Fort $24.00

External image

I feel like I need a deckbuilder in my life and this one where I enjoy the art, theme and game play. Great price too!

Edit: Replacing Fort with:

Quest for El Dorado $24.97
External image

This is going to be the best bang for your buck deckbuilder at this price range. Racing game and a deck builder!

Are You A Robot? $1.57
External image

I don't know what this is but it fits the budget.

Total: $99.44

edit: With Quest for El Dorado, this brings it up to 3 Knizia's. I guess I'm a fan.

My first buy would be

All three Game: Magic The Gathering – Arena of the Planeswalkers sets. -$35 Now this one is sort of cheating as AOTP is out of print, but it is really cheap. I reckon $35 would easily get me a set of all three: I have paid a total of $37.50 for two complete sets of three, including shipping.($17.50 for a set new from resellers two years ago, $20 inc. shipping from a fellow geek a month ago, and neither of these were extremely low.)

Balderdash -$15 My favorite Party game, with some bluffing thrown in. I would rather get the version I have now instead of the newest one but I am not paying the outrageous prices it often goes for.

Santorini -$21 A solid choice for an abstract, easier to find willing opponents than chess.

Forbidden Island -$16 A good cooperative that is cheaper than Pandemic. I have never tried the Crew thing.

A set of four Bicycle playing card decks -$10 An infinite number of things can be played with these.

I will round out my purchase with a bad set of 100 poker chips. -$2 I can use these as counters for the infinite games as outlined above.

Now, this adds up to $99. I rounded up all numbers, so let's just say the other dollar is to help cover tax.
I took my prices from GameNerdz when available, Amazon when not.

Keyflower - $42.97
Board Game: Keyflower

Keyflower is fantastic. You have this quaint, pastoral art that even comes with individually rendered country homes to hide your pieces behind. What this idyllic veneer conceals is the meanest, most interactive euro I've ever played. Serves double-duty as both a euro and an auction game on my list.

Sushi Go Party! - $17.57
Board Game: Sushi Go Party!

I debated putting Sushi Go! here instead to save revenue, but for just $5 you increase your replayability by a factor of 10. Such a great game for any group, not just boardgamers. Easy to teach, fast to play, and hard to put down. My favorite drafting game.

Arboretum - $13.97
Board Game: Arboretum

Somehow the two meanest games I own both made it onto my list, not quite sure what that says about me... Arboretum is so much value packed into a beautiful card game. Every turn of Arboretum is an intense bout of mental judo, as you try to balance keeping control over the cards in your hand against grabbing the cards in the discard every round. Great game, it's horrible!

Galaxy Trucker - $20.97
Board Game: Galaxy Trucker

In contrast to the Keyflowers and Arboretums of this world, we have Galaxy Trucker. Galaxy Trucker is just unabashed wackiness from start to finish. You're feeling good about this ship you've built, until you realize halfway across the galaxy the entire left hull is only held on by 1 unshielded connector and the asteroids are closing in...

This was really tough. Basically, I could get two games that I really like or I could get 5-6 games that are pretty good and would provide a more varied experience in my gaming.

I decided to go with 5-6 games for the variety and because it allowed me to get some games that I could play with my wife. I also thought of this from the Green Tank standpoint as I don't think I would have a problem trading these in the future for new games.

Clans of Caledonia
Board Game: Clans of Caledonia

Not my favorite game but it's a solid strategy game at a good price. It also has a solo mode and enough variability to keep things interesting over repeat plays. $38.97

Sushi Go!

This is such a great idea and I love the podcast series! To my surprise I think I like Red Tank's list best! I tried not to duplicate any but couldn't help it with Orange Tank's favorite game of all time...

A lot of people seem to have chosen variety with more, cheaper, games and I went the other way. I chose a few games that I love, played a ton, and am still eager to play (and don't see that changing in the future).

The Castles of Burgundy - $28.75
Board Game: The Castles of Burgundy

This is a steal for my favorite game of all time. Approachable, scales great for different player counts, and tons of replayability.

The Resistance: Avalon - $13.97
Board Game: The Resistance: Avalon

The best social deduction game there is. Some of my best gaming memories come from this small box and it’s one I’ll always enjoy playing and introducing to new groups.

Terra Mystica - $55.97
Board Game: Terra Mystica

I wanted an epic experience and unfortunately it seems War of the Ring: Second Edition has risen in price so I went with Terra Mystica for my heavy, epic experience game. All the different factions and interactions there give a ton to explore and it’s a game I’m happy to just continue diving deep into.

I am using Boardgamebliss as I am Canadian. My limit is $133.67 CAD which currently coverts to $100 USD.

Medici $37.95

This and Ra have battled for my #1 game of all time over the past few years. Ra is currently OOP, so my decision was easy. This game is the best 5p experience ever. I adore it and this is not a bad price either.

Battle Line $20.95

My favourite 2p game BY FAR. This version gets the nod over the others because it is the most functional without any printing issues. Endless replay ability and a genius design.

Chronicles of Crime. $36.95

My favourite co-op game by a country mile. Very immersive and thematic. The best clue-gathering, detective style game on the market. I love it. My favourite game of the last decade.

High Society (travel edition) $9.95

This game is better than QE and $35 cheaper. Better than For Sale as well. An amazing twist to a simple auction game. One of the best small games ever designed.

Decrypto $26.99

Not great value here...but a game that I adore. It’s far better than Codenames for my money as you are engaged at all times. Chalk full of tension and high stakes, and fantastic experience with 6 players too!

My total is $132.79 and I have have 5 games that I am super happy with!

Pax Porfiriana $44.97 (gamenerdz)
Over 200 cards adding a ton of variety. This game never gets old. One of my absolute favorite designs, rough edges and all.

Board Game: Root
Root $48.00 (gamenerdz)
Not my favorite Cole Werhle game but given the constraints this works. Even without expansions I could play this for a long time.

Total = $92.97

Really wanted 1830 but it's in between print runs, Food Chain Magnate and Great Zimbabwe would've kept a Pax off my list. I'd be ok with these 2 alone more so than getting a few more by getting smaller cheaper games.

This was tough. I picked games based on my current gaming situation - which means mostly games that I can play with the wife, and then a few add-ons. While I'd love to add The Cow Game or Terraforming Mars - Space Base needs to be my "big" game. We love it and it's still fun, with no expansions. Good value at $31.99.

Railroad Ink: Deep Blue Edition

No brainer - $13.97 for a portable, fun game that we love. Need to have that game for sitting on the porch with a glass of wine.

Pandemic: Hot Zone – North America

I have to have a co-op game, and Fall of Rome was nearly $40. So I'm rolling the dice with this game for $15.99. These are tough decisions.

The Quest for El Dorado

What a great value at $24.97. This gets added because I skimped on my co-op game. Highly replayable, works great at 2-4.

Coloretto

Coloretto rounds out the list at $10.47. Now I've got something to play with my parents when they come to visit, or with casual friends. I'll never get tired of Coloretto.

That leaves me with an extra $2.61, which I will use to start a mutual fund. Think of the future, kids!

What's up, itsya boy Woggers, back in the game y'all!

For my list, I went with breadth over depth. If I'm resetting my game collection completely, I'm just going to find myself pining for some of the big box experiences I have with all their expansions. Sure, there's plenty to do in the base boxes of Root, Orleans, and Res Arcana, but I'd be too tempted to get the expansions. No, I'm going to do this more like Kellen (the Red Tank) and cover my bases to have a collection that fits lots of scenarios and game groups.

Star Realms - $10.47
Board Game: Star Realms
This is going to get me my deckbuilding experience. I think they're best at two players, so I don't have issues with Star Realms' smaller player count. I would pick up Frontiers, but I don't have the money to spare in this experiment.

Cockroach Poker - $11.99
Board Game: Cockroach Poker
This is by far the most selfish pick on my list, because I could replicate this with a deck of cards, or play Skull, or who knows what. But Cockroach Poker is a hallmark in my board game collection and I would feel totally lost without it. My best memories in board gaming come from this game.

Werewords - $13.97
Board Game: Werewords
I play lots of games with family members, friends, and even strangers. Werewords is gonna fill that niche, as it's infinitely replayable and super inviting to all players. Hopefully my phone or tablet survive the fire.

Innovation - $13.97
Board Game: Innovation
This is my "I'm going to learn to love this game" pick on the list. I've only played it a half-dozen times, but I feel like I'm just warming up to this game. With such a small collection, I'm going to need some design space to explore with just a person or two. This gives me that outlet.

Pictomania (Second Edition) - $13.97
Board Game: Pictomania (Second Edition)
I absolutely adore drawing games, and Pictomania is the best of them, heads and shoulders. It gets the room screaming and electrified with energy. Again, you could play this with some paper and pencils, but it's iconic enough for me to put on my list.

ICECOOL - $15.97
Board Game: ICECOOL
I am SHOOK that this game is not on anyone else's list so far. It's a cheap flicking game that will provide bottomless experiences. Play with the layouts they recommend. Make your own. Use household items, go nuts. ICECOOL is a timeless classic, and if you don't agree, then you probably haven't played this game. This will cover dexterity and flicking games for me, which are a big part of my gaming diet (I presume my crokinole board burned in the fire).

Decrypto - $18.39
Board Game: Decrypto
I could have saved five bucks here in getting Codenames, but I decided to splurge a little and snag Decrypto instead. Codenames has plenty of apps that I could replicate, and if I need a board game in that scenario, Werewords will have me covered. Decrypto is something that can fill a board game night as time melts away around the tennis-like back-and-forth between teams. It's a thicker design, which I think this collection needed.

Checkout = $98.73
- Star Realms
- Cockroach Poker
- Werewords
- Innovation
- Pictomania
- ICECOOL
- Decrpyto

And there you have it! Some also-rans would be The Crew (my family will play trick-taking card games instead), Times Up (we play this on paper all the time), Fox in the Forest (we'll play Star Realms and Cribbage to make up for it), The Resistance: Avalon (Werewords will have to do), Not Alone (also Werewords), and Incan Gold (Pictomania should get people just as excited). Again, I'd love to splurge on something like Dominion or an Uwe game, but those won't give me the experience I once had with them with expansions, and I couldn't cut down this list any further.

My list is going to have a "playing with wife and kids" theme because those are the people I almost always play with. The things I do for my family... With such a small budget, it's amazing how easy it is to pass on $40 and $50 games that you love.

Wingspan - $49.97 - It's a big hit with my wife and the kids too. We've played it a ton, and it's still not getting old. I'm foregoing the European expansion to make room for another game. I feel like I can only fit one $50 game in here. Otherwise, I'd end up with just 2 games in the collection.

Karuba - $34.99 - A like it enough to include it, but not my favorite. It'll get a lot of play with my family, and it's my daughter's favorite.

Kingdomino - $13.97 - Another family favorite, even if not my favorite. Plenty of replayability.

I had to pass on personal favorites like Dominion, X-Wing, and Imperial Assault because they really need expansions to make it worth adding, and that would blow the budget.

I had to pass on some of my top games like Memoir '44, 7 Wonders, and Lords of Waterdeep because my family won't play them enough with me to justify taking up half the budget.

I'm new here but how can I resist this sort of challenge? It's darn intriguing.

Blue Lagoon - $20.97
-Simple, strategic, Knizia. Enough Said

The Estates - $27.97
-My love for auction games must be satisfied (not the "every game is an auction game" type)

Just One - $20.24 (on sale)
-My wife hates drawing games so this is a party game of choice for us

High Society - $13.97
-More auctions please

Air, Land, & Sea - $10.47
-Simple, strategic with an evolving "meta" over repeat plays

Grand Total: $93.62

This was fun, so many good games left on the cutting room floor. Also, no dice chuckers. I'd have included Str!ke instead of Air, Land & Sea but it put me just over. Leaving off The Crew was also very sad.

Castles of Burgundy - Not my favorite game, but never disappoints. Good replayability for the price point and I've never disliked a play of it.

Schotten Totten or Air, Land, and Sea - but what I really wanted here was Santorini

External image

Codenames - would have taken Werewords, Just One, or Anomia in its place if any of them would have saved me enough money to get Santorini above.

External image

Aeon's End War Eternal - Really love deckbuilding and if this isn't a desert island where I can' just take "all of Dominion" this is probably my favorite challenging option out there.

External image

Arboretum - of course I wouldn't forget this little walk through the park!

I cheated by only counting whole dollars when running the math.

Due to Covid, my main gaming partner is my wife or myself. Only one of us likes games.

Aeon's End: Outcasts - $41.97
Board Game: Aeon's End: Outcasts

I recently got a deal on eBay for 2nd Edition, War Eternal, and The Void and have been playing it solo almost every night. If all of that was lost and I had to restart I would probably go with Outcasts (even though I've never played it). It has the most diverse set of mages (which is something important to me and my diverse family), and I've heard great things about it.

Kingdomino - $13.97
Board Game: Kingdomino

This is currently the game my wife wants to play the most. I enjoy it too.

Rajas of the Ganges - $34.97
Board Game: Rajas of the Ganges

I wanted a mid weight euro game that my wife would be willing to play. This sometimes fits the bill . I enjoy chucking pretty dice, the tile placement, the worker placement, and the unique win condition. I feel like if we played it enough it would become sort of like a comfort food, but in board game form.

This gives me a grad total of $90.91. I would use the rest to buy a cribbage board and cards from a thrift store.

My favorite game of all time. Hits deckbuilding, tactical gameplay, two-player...Love it and such a great price. Each game I am on the edge of my seat.

Azul 27.97

The game that my wife and I play the most. This has been a great way to get friends and family introduced to more strategic, yet fun games!

Century: Golem Edition 27.97

One of the games that has been great for teaching the kids about different strategies and risks/rewards. Do I try to win the game by rushing or do I get less point cards that are worth much more? It's quick and simple to learn and has beautiful production.

Point Salad 15.99

This is another game that my family enjoys that never seems to get old. It's also one that the kids can play on their own without being coached. I also appreciate the math strategies they practice. Let's hear it for INTEGERS!

Total: $99.40.

Boom.

$42.97 - Keyflower - My favorite euro, stellar at 2 and scales great up to 6, extremely deep strategically but not too hard to learn. Auctions, worker placement, economics, spatial puzzles, engine building, it's all there.
/// Alternative for this slot at the same price point: Agricola

$48.57 - Cosmic Encounter - My favorite conflict-oriented game, great for social occasions and mixed audiences, endlessly variable and surprising.
/// Alternative for this slot at the same price point: Azul + The Estates

$7.77 - Hanabi - Perfect travel game as it's unique, scales well from 2 up, and teaches in under 5 minutes. Can get as deep as any classic game once you start learning conventions but is equally fun without them.
