We love this game. For my group it hits the multiplayer wargame sweet-spot, much the same way that Struggle of Empires did. I think it's a better game than Struggles.

After the last playing, group members requested that we play Starcraft at the next meeting. It's rare--almost unheard of--for any particular game to be requested.

Game of the year.

Starcraft just barely beat out Age of Empires III for Game of the Year honors. Age of Empires is a tight, tense, and thrilling game, but Age is a Euro (albeit this year's favorite) while Starcraft is a rare example of playable multiplayer wargame.

Breese is becoming one of my favorite designers. Reef Encounter is brilliant.

The Key games are ably illustrated by the designer's wife (at least the two I have are), but her cute style belies a thoroughly cutthroat game. Key Harvest is a friendly knife fight sort of game--just the kind my pals relish.

One reason I still play wargames is because the good ones provide breadth; their scope engenders creativity. Pax delivers this in spades. Unlike the current CDG fad that makes doing and moving torturous, Pax encourages--demands rather--the sweeping move and bold gesture.

These next two were surprise hits for me. I'm always on the lookout for multiplayer wargames and Dust hits that spot. Quick, elegant, and full of depth.

Sweet game. Similar to Caylus from the same publisher. Tension starts building from the first moment and continues to mount throughout the game.

I suspect the game hasn't gotten higher ratings because of its obtuse theme, and a name that sounds like a disease.

Now for the misses.

This is an OK game but very aggressive for a Euro. When I played it at Origins, the group I fell in with hated it--just hated it.

Left me cold after the first play and colder after subsequent plays. Much prefer Caylus. Traded for San Francisco.

Tide comes with 12 maps but when they're all put together, the resulting map is less than half the size of an ASL map. When I realized that, I put it away. When I want a light wargame, I prefer the much better Combat Command: Europe.

Wallace, once one of my favorite designers, is on a losing streak. Byzantium, Tempus, and Perikles are just OK. Very disappointing.

Yeech! Yeech! Yeech! A 7-hour torture session during which we finished 2--2!!--turns turned me off forever. In fact, I had such a miserable time, I've decided to purge my collection of all CDGs (except Wilderness War and Twilight Struggle).

I like immersive games but for me the laughable history motifs produced the opposite effect.

When someone mentions this game, I think of Honest John telling Pinocchio "You're allergic!" That's what I am--I'm allergic to HIS.

Dog of the Year
