In the winter of 1997 while playing Monopoly with my roommates at Laurentian University, I purchased the CD that was providing the background music to our game, from one of my roommates, for $2500 Monopoly money and I STILL WON THE GAME. The CD was a compilation of 70s hits, "Mississippi Queen" by Mountain was the song playing while we negotiated our deal.

While enjoying some beverages in a hostel in Paris in the spring of 2002 with some new found travelling companions, I pulled out some dice that were inexplicably in my jacket pocket, jotted down the Yahtzee game sheet from memory and played a spirited game with my three new boardgamegeek buddies!

In the spring of 2000 while in my last year at university, I turned down an opportunity to party with some pretty young girls who were visiting from a different city because I was busy working on my own variant rules to Risk... I know... I don't know what I was thinking either...

This is only tangentially related to boardgaming, but I think it still qualifies. Some friends and I used to play Munchkin and its variants and drink a few beers before heading out to parties for further shenanigans.

On this particular night, we were playing Munchkin Bites! and finished up after a couple of games and we were all tipsy. It was mid-evening now, so prime time for hitting up the parties. At my school as I assume most parties are in colleges, the majority of people were male. But at this particular party, it was literally 80% female, we were pleasantly surprised.

Unfortunately, one of my friends and I were still latched onto the horror theme from Munchkin Bites! and spent several hours debating vampire and werewolf biology and physiology. People would wander up to start conversations, before realizing how nerdy the conversation was and wandering off.

One night as teens we were driving around the neighborhood, racing some other guy from my high school, etc. After failing to lose his Camaro by going fast, I decided to frustrate the other guy by going slow. Fortunately, that was the moment the cops pulled me over - when I was going 20 miles per hour below the speed limit, not above it.

My friends and I were in a big old station wagon. Between us, we had precisely zero beers to drink on that particular evening because we'd been gaming in my friend's basement. The cop asked about the big bag of cans in the back of the wagon - they were pop cans Mom was going to take to the store.

The cop asked if we had any weed; we didn't.

The cop asked what Larry was holding on his lap. It was the Dungeonmaster's Guide from Advanced D&D. He asked what it was. We began to explain the game. You know, elves and dwarves go out and kill dragons and evil wizards.

The cop gave me my driver's license back, began to back slowly away from the car, and told us to behave.

My first year in college, I did nothing but play my bass alone in my dorm room and design terrible PBM games. Some friends from high-school decided to set me up with some girl they'd met ... She showed up at my dorm room one Friday night, was friendly and nice-looking, and I proceeded to convince her to play Talisman (2nd ed.) on my cold, hard, tiled floor for the next 6 hours. When the game finally ended, I'd clobbered her, and, on her way out the door, I said, "Don't worry, you'll do better next time."

Needless to say, there was no next time.

I think I have put this on another geeklist before, but it belongs here too. A friend and I wanted to play cribbage but we could not find a board to peg on in his house. Rather that get a piece of paper like normal people, he got out seven pennies and counted in binary and I got three dice and counted in base 5 (the sixes were zeros and the fives didnt count) The final score was 1111101 to 431. (125 to 116)shake

Several years ago we had a group of guys that played Risk every other Friday night; we ran it like a league with points for a win varying based on the number of other players in the game. As if the idea of a Risk league wasn't geeky enough, we also developed a few classic phrases, including a rare double pun.

Of course, everyone has to utter Kramer's classic "Ukraine is weak!" when attacking Ukraine. But the territory just east of Ukraine also provided some great banter as we played off a butchered pronunciation of Ural. "I want my Al back! That's not Ural (your al), it's MY AL!" Ural exchanged hands numerous times over the course of a typical game just so we could utter this phrase.

Perhaps the most classic of all our phrases was the rare double pun. It's mere child's play to come up with a single word pun, but to have both words in a name or phrase play into a pun is rare indeed. In the picture here (from a Brazilian Risk board) you can see the dotted line linking Alaska to Kamchatka, so that either territory can attack the other. Playing off the geography of that region, if a player attacked Alaska from Kamchatka, or vice versa, the attacker was said to be "bearing straight" down on his opponent. Wow...I still get chills at the pure brilliance of the double pun. You can't get much geekier than that.

When my wife and I moved house we needed a new table..... had to spend several hours in IKEA working out which ones would accommodate Carabande + expansion, and provide the smoothest surface. A number of otherwise highly suitable and cheaper options were rejected as a result.

At least we didn't take the game with us to check it out exactly.....

Way too late past midnight one night, I was playing Dungeon with my brother and a friend of his. I was playing a Wizard and was about to encounter a Witch.
"I attack with bare hands!" I announced.
My brother's friend replied, "Why don't you use your own?"
It was a pretty lame pun, but at the time it seemed hysterically funny (sleep deprivation can do that to you.) The rest of the game was interrupted by intermittent queries of "Why don't you use your own?" followed by howls of laughter.

O.K. Here is a tale of geekiness working in my favor. I used to have a pal by the name of Blaine, you know the kind. the guy that thinks he's god's gift to women, well Blaine used to always like to tell me how to get over my problem of not being a huge megastud like he was, among his gems of wisdom were such great tips as lie about what you are into say you like whatever crappy music they like, and NEVER mention that D&D wierd gaming crap (even though he played with us on occasion) his biggest hint was to get in good with the father. when he was dating a girl named Charity he brought this tip up a lot, after all her father practically worshiped him. 6 months later they were splitsville and charity (whom I had not met at this point was dating another friend of mine by the name of Jeff (much more of a gamer, and far much less swagger.) anyhoo we were both bitten by the SFB bug which led to harder stuff such as F&E. I was at Jeff's place when he told me he was supposed to go with Charity and watch her at some dance practice I decided to tag along, for moral support and to tell him what i had figured out so far of one of the most massive games I ever tired to play, We were both sans wheels so Charity's dad picked us up on the way, as they got into the back seat, her dad spied the manual and asked "what's that?"

I sheepishly tired to explain that it was a sprawling tactical and geopolitical game based in the Star Trek universe without making Jeff or myself sound like too large of dorks. After my explaination her father's asked if it was anything like Axis and Allies, which he and his brother were both fanatical for. after some rousing pro-gaming talk on the way to the recital, (which admittedly bored Charity to tears) I had to mention the fact that after all that talk Blaine had done about how to act around her, parents being your self worked out O.K. as soon as her father figured out I knew he ex he responded "That little sh*t!?and a few choice other explatives" In short by being himself and hanging out with like geeks Jeff had a much bigger "in" with the father than Blaine did, which made me feel pretty good,
