My first contribution to the list this month is Ukiyo, an abstract puzzler, 16-card microgame with a calming vibe. If you like brain burners that feature spatial reasoning puzzles such as Sprawlopolis and Crystallo (which both started as PnP games and have now moved on to becoming published games), then this one should be right up your alley. Produced the cards using my usual lamination method. Printed fronts and backs double-sided to 65 pound/176 gsm card stock, laminated in 3mil pouches. The PnP file is currently available for free from the Kickstarter page (no link to avoid running afoul of the rules).

These are in the Battle Line game listing but are some awesome art that made the game more enjoyable for myself and my wife.

The cards also include enough cards to play Parade and Lost Cities.

So far we have only played Battleline and Lost Cities with them. Parade is soon. The fun little quick card games are just in my enjoyable game set.

I am using linen card stock to create these. It is a little thick so the cards tend to be thick. I print the front sheet and a back and use a glue stick to glue them together. The resulting cards are corner rounded at 7mm and put in a Mayday premium card sleeve.

The feel when playing was good. While I do glue them I don't believe this method results in cards that are usable without sleeves.

I think this took me in the 2-4 hour range I wasn't paying a lot of attention to time and watching some TV while it was happening.

I've been sitting on the files for this for a while. Someone on the FB group posted their recent build which gave men the needed kick. Besides, I've been feeling the urge to build something again. I'm building both the base game and the Shadowraiders expansion/follow on.

As of this writing almost everything is printed. Just missing the Shadowraiders Control deck. Ran out of my preferred PnP paper stock.

Ryan Laukat made a free PnP game called Primeval Peril, using a subset of Sleeping God's rules (free bonus since the game has been delayed again and again).

Tried out my brother's new color laser printer; we learned to print one full color page at a time. Add some PennyGems and it is good copy enough to play with.

From gallery of Stonebeard

It definitely works as a pleasant introduction and tutorial to the way Sleeping Gods plays out. There is a nice challenge in balancing the crew's work while keeping them rested and equipped (plus keeping the boat in one piece), all while exploring the waterways we find ourselves in.

Unfortunately, now I want to play Sleeping Gods just that much more.

Thanks Ryan!

A very good teaching tool for newbies in 18XX games.

Constructed this game with only a black ink printer. And highlighted my tiles and charters and stocks with different highlighter colours. Not beautiful. But very playable.

Lots of cutting when I mount the papers onto waste card board from some old art materials I have kept for years.

Nice simple game. Get the hang of more 18XX constructions to come.

I like the old-school minimalist black and white theme.

Nothing fancy in this build, cards duplexed on card stock, the tiles backed with chipboard. I use colored cubes for the monsters.

It'll have to break for the PnP Secret Santas soon, but most of my PnP time lately has been spent on prototypes for my current skirmish-wargame game design project.

(Plus some alcohol marker practice that I'm still not at all convinced doesn't work better with blacklining.)

The standups are made with an approach I've been trying out more recently using foamex, a thin foamed-PVC board that feels like foamcore but glues like sheet styrene.

Board Game: Crokinole

With the winter lockdown in place I finally decided to make a Crokinole board to keep the whole family in shape while outdoor sports activities are greatly reduced. This is what I have so far:

From gallery of tomaszek

Update #1: I started by cutting the four base pieces out of a sheet of 10mm ply. I glued them together overnight and cut the corners to get the octogonal shape. I does feel a little fragile right now, but will get sturdy enough once the deck is glued on top.

From gallery of tomaszek
From gallery of tomaszek

Cutting out the deck was a little trickier. First, I made some testing with a jigsaw, but the blades I had at home were damaging the ply too much and didn’t allow for a neat cut. Probably the ply quality isn’t the best either. So I finally decided to keep it simple and used my old good coping saw. Have you ever realized that the crokinole deck’s circumference is over 2m? I am pretty happy with the result. I sanded the deck and applied the first coat of varnish.

From gallery of tomaszek
From gallery of tomaszek

By the way, the migration season has started and working outside is quite risky. That’s the reason why the board is protected under an old shower curtain.

From gallery of tomaszek

Update #2: After four coats of poly (and light sanding in between) I decided it was time to finally draw the lines. I was afraid of making a distinguishable mark at each line’s starting point so I put a piece of magazine cover on the board before placing the sharpie down. Then started to rotate the compass letting the sharpie slide onto the wood already in motion, removing the cover before completing the circle. It worked fine.

I also drilled the peg pilot holes and cut out the center hole. I used a hand drill with a 35mm hole saw bit (very scary).

From gallery of tomaszek
From gallery of tomaszek

From gallery of tomaszek
From gallery of tomaszek

Everything took me like an hour or so and I was tense as if I were waiting for a dentist’s appointment. Who said crafting wasn’t fun?

Update #3: I have accomplished the difficult task of assembling the base without glueing everything to our dining table. The outer rail sections were a little tricky to cut without an angle saw but I think I mostly got it straight. I started with one piece, clamped it in place and made my way around the board cutting one piece at a time and checking the fit. After some more sanding and coating I could finally attach the deck to the base. The alignement wasn’t easy especially that I discovered that the peg holes were not exactly uniformly distributed around the cercle. No idea how I let this happen but the jig I made was skewed. Oh well, one day it will be considered a collector’s piece.

For the pegs I used round headed screws and transparent tubing. I was afraid of drilling larger holes in the board so I used 4.2mm screws. In order to get the peg diameter large enough, I used two pieces of tubing of matching inside-outside diameters, one inside the other. The total peg diameter is around 8mm which seems correct.

From gallery of tomaszek
From gallery of tomaszek

I guess I should finish the surface with some kind of wax. I know spray car wax is recommended as the easiest solution. I know nothing about those products and I am a little concerned about them being for outdoors use and potentially toxic when used indoors. Maybe some kind of furniture wax would be more suitable? I need to do more research before I decide what to apply.

Anyway, we played a couple of trial rounds with kids yesterday and it was great. The board is totally playable as it is. I cannot compare to a « real » board but for me the buttons slide well across the whole board with no effort.

Sniper: Stalingrad 1942 by Bojan Prakljacic.

From gallery of DrHenryArmitage

ou are a lone sniper on a mission to kill the enemy general. Moving cautiously through the rubble of the once great city of Stalingrad, you must hold off the forces of the Wermacht. With limited ammo and supplies, you must be careful not to expose yourself to enemy fire. A solo 9-card microgame set in the ruins of Stalingrad, 1942. Designed by Bojan Prakljacic (designer of Tiny Eldritch Horror). PnP version created by me after Bojan’s account got deleted along with all his posts. Used some dark PnP magic to resurrect that which had been thought lost. PnP build features double-thickness laminated cards, five-layer hex tokens, and a custom die.

Game: Buddy Cop personal PnP demo version.

From gallery of DrHenryArmitage

Detective Ricky Lu put up a valiant stand at the Parasol Pharmaceutical Corporate HQ. Tipped off that the notorious Associates criminal syndicate had been running a counterfeiting operation using the drug company as a front, Detective Lu selflessly raced to the scene. Why he chose not to wait for backup before storming the area, we’ll never know. I’d like to think that his actions indicate incredible bravery in the line of duty, and not, as some detractors claim, “an astonishing lack of tactical knowledge, forethought, or even common sense.”

From gallery of DrHenryArmitage

Nevertheless, in the ensuing intense gun battle, Detective Lu was able to take out four members of the Associates cartel, severely wounding two others. Blessed with a satisfying degree of player agency and randomness mitigation, on his turn Detective Lu was able to play his Cop cards for either the top “Encounter” action (paying the associated Grit Cost printed on the space underneath the card’s position on his cool Cop Board ™), or discard them for the bottom “Prepare” action for no cost, to collect a range of useful tokens. Even though Encounters are resolved by dice, Detective Lu knew that he could modify his results to his advantage by discarding the appropriate token or tokens. By a combination of skillful card play and resource management, Detective Lu managed to complete three out of four end game goals (unique to each of the three different Operations included in the base game), and was about to face off against Associates cartel boss Anatoly Volkov in the final showdown. Sadly, it was then that Detective Lu succumbed to his wounds, and the game ended in a loss.

From gallery of DrHenryArmitage

When Kat Larson learned that her partner Ricky Lu had been killed, a cold look of grim determination entered her eyes. She made a vow to avenge his death. She would make the Associates pay for their crimes. As she slid her badge into her desk drawer and holstered her unauthorized .357 Magnum, she whispered through gritted teeth: “This time, it’s personal.”

Yesterday, I finished a little PnP project I've been working at on-and-off for a while: Cathedral!

Board Game: Cathedral

Originally, I wanted to borrow my dad's wood-working equipment to make a nice set with 3D pieces, but then lockdown happened and I decided I could still enjoy playing the game with cardboard tiles.

Generally, my PnP philosophy is to make them rough, but functional. That way, I get to spend as little time building and as much time playing as possible. I do also enjoy the process of building, but because my time is so precious nowadays, I want to prioritise playing over building.

Didn't see this available in the US and it looked really cool. So I made it out of wood. I used a 6ft 1x4 to make the pieces and tower, the tower was made with the wood, a cut up paint stirrer, elmer's glue, and wood dowels. The pieces were made with a wood burner and some water color paint. Not a bad days workl (took about 4 hours).

Enfim, montei o jogo. E Estou adorando!

Hello everyone!

It's the first time I post on this Geeklist! But, I am in love with the world of "Print and Play", since April 2020. I made almost 50 games!

This November, I set up a few games. The first one was "Unbroken". The designer was very requested to indicate where I could buy the PNP files' ’.

At first, I was concerned about the low grade in BGG. But, I realized that the low score was due to problems that occurred in the "Kickstarter".

Anyway, I set up the game. And I'm loving it!

Most likely way I'll ever have this in my collection again (In a condition I'd want, at least). Just printed up and sticky papered to cheap chip board. The counters and images were available here, on BGG. Thanks for those contributions fellow 'geeks.

My nephew really liked playing to roll for it... but it is fairly expensive to get to where I live.

So, I made a retheme.

Meet DÉnosaure! (or Diceosaurus in English), my dino themed retheme of roll for it!

Board Game: At All Costs! The Great War in the East
Being something of a completist and having completed the (free) PNP version of ‘To The Last Man’ as one of my earliest projects, when I noticed that its Eastern Front sibling was available as a PNP from Hollandspiele I felt strangely compelled to shell out the fifteen bucks and make a copy. This, despite my copy of TtLM never having been played, mainly because the friend who had expressed an interest in it seems to have disappeared off the radar, but since when has such a factor influenced my actions.

However, while the package is good value and the game looks interesting, and many people will undoubtedly be happy with it as is, I have to admit that I consider the graphical design, a big thing for me, a bit lacklustre and a falling-off from the standard set by the earlier title. For example, TtLM made excellent use of evocative period images in the card designs, whereas these cards are rather bland. I imagine that Hollandspiele have to be careful of copyright infringements with their commercial editions, whereas we PNPers can plunder images from print and from the internet regardless.

As usual I put the whole thing into DrawPlus X8 and this is now very much work in progress, as you will hopefully notice.

Ilya’s ‘board’ does look the part, suggestive of a grand strategic map. I might add a few extra graphical bits, but probably not.
I have set it out in A1 format which I will print and laminate in four A3 sections.

This is an image of my virtual drawing board with the editing of the counter images in progress. To liven up the rather dreary counters, I have substituted images of the national flags for the boring letters identifying the nationalities and for the control markers and such. There is undoubtedly a risk of the whole effect being more reminiscent of a regatta than a bloody conflict, but we will see.

For the various markers: ‘Retreat; Counter-Attack’; Out of Supply’ etc. I have substituted what seem, to me at least to be evocative images for the text. DrawPlus makes this very easy to do.
For example:

In a fit of fastidiousness, I decided,to edit the rulebook to incorporate the amended counter designs. Unfortunately loading the PDF directly into DrawPlus resulted in a formatting nightmare, so I loaded ‘Snapshots’ of the pages and simply overlaid the old images with the new.

Next task: the cards.

Inicialmente, relutei em montar a versão PNP deste jogo. Havia muitos comentários acerca da ausência de back of cards e outras dificuldades na impressão. Todas essas circunstâncias aumentavam demasiadamente a dificuldade da construção.

Por outro lado, escutei muitos comentários positivos do modo solo. Então, resolvi me aventurar.

No final, gostei do resultado.

------

Initially, I was reluctant to craft the PNP version of this game. There were many comments about the absence of back of cards and other difficulties in printing. All of these circumstances added to the difficulty of construction.

On the other hand, I heard many positive comments in the solo mode. So, I decided to venture out.

I craft the game a little bit each day and I was not stressed.

Going on a low-ink line, I made new back cards. In this case, it was the back cards of the map, enemies and items (scavenges). For this, I searched for icons on Google and organized them in a table in Microsoft Word.

In the end, I liked the result.

In a way, the building of this game reminded me of the PNP Zelda Clokwork The build of Zelda Clockwork Realm was a lot of work, and so far I haven't played it. It took so much work that I'm afraid to be disappointed with de gameplay. One day I will overcome this fear rs.
