Scoundrel is a single player rogue-like dungeon crawler that uses a standard deck of playing cards. It was developed by Zack Gage and Kurt Bieg for Train Jam 2011. Since its inception, the original gameplay mechanic has been further developed and rethemed numerous times across multiple gaming formats. This list will collect various ideations of the Scoundrel-type game.

Minimalist and elegant, this is the game that started the trend. It was created by Zach Gage and Kurt Bieg for Train Jam 2011 and developed into a prototype for iOS that was unfortunately never released. It now exists solely as a ruleset that is fully playable with a standard deck of playing cards. According to Gage,

“[The first game] is called Scoundrel, and I'm not going to into the mechanics, but basically it's like a roguelike solitaire game. It has the moments of interesting choice that go into a roguelike--and the extreme difficulty and constant death--but it's also literally playable with a deck of cards.” (IndieCade 2011: Halcyon, Jeff Mattas, 10/25/2911)

The image depicted at left is from the unpublished iOS prototype.

Donsol, short for Dungeon Solitaire, was created by John Eternal and Devine Lu Linvega, also for Train Jam in 2015. Donsol was met with a controversial reception on iOS due to its similarity to both Scoundrel and Card Crawl although the creators emphatically attested that they had never heard of either game at the time of development. Donsol utilizes the same basic mechanics as Scoundrel while expanding the cards used to include the full deck. Originally released in desktop and mobile formats, the developers distanced themselves from Apple and released the game as a Nintendo ROM playable via emulator (depicted at left). Like Scoundrel, Donsol is also fully playable with a standard deck of playing cards.

Card Crawl was developed for iOS by Tinytouchtales team Arnold and Weibke Rauers with art design by Max "Mexer" Fiedler. Arnold vocally acknowledged deriving inspiration from Scoundrel and other games and brought several new elements to the gameplay including both offensive and defensive weapons, treasure that can be applied to unlockable content, and special cards that perform non-standard functions. The game is comprised of a custom 54-card deck which is based on but not playable with a standard deck of playing cards. Mexer's custom card designs and tavern setting bring the theme to life graphically.

The Fool's Journey is mechanically similar to Card Crawl. My original impetus for creating the game was the desire to play Card Crawl with a physical deck of cards. I had the thought of using the tarot trumps as monsters and the basic mechanics and theme seemed to correlate naturally to the values and properties of the deck.

Upon close examination, Gamot reveals itself to be an illustrated Donsol deck with a few modifications. All references to playing cards have been replaced by the themed elements of weapons, potions, and monsters. Gamot modifies the normal distribution by adding a randomizer, like the Ace in The Fool's Journey, and a few shields that can be equipped alongside a weapon. The gameplay is otherwise identical to Donsol.

Escape from Station 52 is also a rethemed Donsol deck. Instead of the standard dungeon crawling scenario, it incorporates a sci-fi space battle theme. The dungeon rooms become space station corridors full of situations and threats, military weapons and gear. The essential game mechanic remains the same.

Mind Cards by Christophe Coyard

Mind Cards is similar to Card Crawl but it uses a food energy gameplay limitation system instead of weapons. Attacks modifiers are strictly the province of unlockable special cards and everything is resolved directly from the eight card playing field.
