The 52 Games challenge goes into its 6th year. I had a lot of fun over the years and this is submitted early for tweaking the categories with your help again. In 2020 I had a lot of fun with the #stayathome challenge which offered broader categories for daily gaming and I will copy some here, so some categories are easier than other. Nonetheless we will still have our beloved tricky prompts that ask us to think outside of the box.
I will also include various prompts asking to pick one from previous years, so we can revisit our favourite prompts from all the years before.

In order to join the challenge create an entry in the GeekList, where you can track the games played. The Challenge starts on January 1st 2021.

A few clarifications:

1) The list may be completed in any order
2) The same base game may not be used to satisfy multiple criteria.
3) You do not need to fulfil exactly one category per week. You may play games at whatever pace you want, the goal being to complete the list by December 31, 2021
If you join during the year, you may use games played prior to joining if they are from 2021
4) When you are finished, send a geekmail to me and I will add you to the hall of fame.

Final list

And here are the categories:
1. Play a game with eastereggs*
2. Play a game connected to the history of the day you play it on.
3. Play a game with a specific time of day in its title, not just day/night (dawn, noon, midnight)
4. Play a game where you can destroy buildings

This is probably my favorite challenge, so I'm definitely in for another year.

(I made a few edits to wording (but not meaning) to fit my format, etc.)

Progress: 41/52

Play a game…

01. … with easter-eggs.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine (3-1-21): This game has lots of Sci Fi easter-eggs on the cards, but my personal favorite is the reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy with the number 42 on a tablet and the astronaut having their towel with them. I fell in love with that book the summer between 9th and 10th grade and never looked back.

02. … connected to the history of the day on which you play it.
Guillotine (7-14-21): While we have a reasonable number of games set in a generic historical time-frame, we have a remarkably small number of games that are explicitly about some specific historical event. Given that, my plan for this category was always to go for a quick, light game that I knew we would be able to make happen - so Guillotine for Bastille Day it was. In my personal history, July 14th is also the anniversary of the day I defended my dissertation. If it weren't for my Francophile dissertation advisor pointing out the connection after my defense, I would never remember with that degree of specificity, but as it is, I will never forget it. Of course, it's also three days before my first wedding anniversary , so I might have remembered anyway, but probably not since we were in the midst of packing for a cross-country move so I could begin my job as a professor and not really doing much in the way of celebrating beyond being glad that I was finally done with grad school. To tie everything back together, pre-pandemic, we found that Guillotine was a great game to play during advising or exam periods when we were very frustrated with students but couldn't particularly show it. Lunchtime gaming to the rescue once again!

03. … with a specific time of day in its title, not just day/night (e.g., dawn, noon, midnight).

04. … where you can destroy buildings.
Flash Point: Fire Rescue (6-12-21): Your goal is actually to keep the building standing long enough to get the trapped people out. That said, almost all of our losses are due to building collapse (3 in a row before a final win on the day noted for this challenge entry). I'm also not averse to strategically chopping a hole in a wall or two in order to get better access in the long run - thereby adding to the destruction of the building. This continues to be a game we binge-play when it hits the table, so it remains a favorite even if it's fallen a bit out of favor with the community as a whole.

05. … by two female designers.

06. … with more than two editions.
Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Thames Murders & Other Cases (2-5-21): This game was first published in 1982, so it should be no surprise that there have been a number of different editions over the years. Sticking just with the English editions, there have been 3 primary versions. The first was published in 1982 by Sleuth Publications. The next iteration of this game came from Ystari in 2012. I got into this with the current version, published by Space Cowboys in 2017. This version cleaned up the typos and errors the English Ystari edition was known for, so I feel like I picked it up at the right time. This was also when the "Thames Murders..." subtitle was added as more stand-alone boxes were to follow. This is definitely not a game for everyone, but my husband and I love working through these cases together. They've been great as he's recovered from 2 foot surgeries in the last 6 months as this was a game we could play while he was laying in bed with his foot elevated. This play was our final one from this set, and we're looking forward to cracking into the second box soon. You just have to keep in mind that Sherlock is a dirty rotten cheater and not focus on the score!

07. … with a rank on BGG > 10,000.
Bloxx! (1-2-21): This just happened to be the first game we played this year that was above this rank, I'm not a slave to rankings, and we have a lot of lighter games which tend to rank lower on BGG. This is a fun little roll-and-write where you're basically playing tetris. Im awful at it, byt i still have fun playing it.

08. … with a title with your initial (hard: all initials).
[My initials are: MJE]
Mr. Jack using the expansion: Mr. Jack Extension (4-18-21): Having a last name that starts with E makes it a bit tricky to find titles that work with my three initials, but the expansion for Mr. Jack fits the bill. I love the added variability the extra characters bring to the game as you truly can't rely on a singe strategy anymore.

09. … in a version that is new to you (e.g., add an expansion, try one of the versions on BGG, etc.).
Unmatched: Robin Hood vs. Bigfoot (1-3-21): We have a lot of expansions, both played and unplayed. The first unplayed one we used this year was this Unmatched set. I've become a huge fan of this game, and the wide array of characters/decks is part of what keeps me coming back for more. I'm definitely settling into a few favorites, however, so it's probably time for me to set up a randomizer.

10. … with animals in artwork, but not relevant to gameplay.
Best Treehouse Ever (1-8-21): There are plenty of options for this category, so it wasn't hard to have a game we played fit. In this game, the animals are just there as part of the the ming of the different rooms (e.g., fish in the aquarium and an elephant in the petting zoo). All the room defy logic as depicted, but they really would make the "best treehouse ever", so clearly they're doing their job.

11. … with a story.
Unlock!: Epic Adventures (1-10-21): Since I want to avoid spoilers, I won't include details, but there are 3 stories in this box. Two were particularly narrative, with one being among the strongest we've had from escape games. We play these for the puzzles rather than the stories, but story is a great plus, and the Unlock series does well with this.

12. … connected to your favourite subject in school.
Merchants & Marauders (2-14-21): I found this challenging since I loved so many topics in school. I'm a professor at a liberal arts university because I value broad education across disciplines. That said, the subject I kept coming back to was history. Merchants & Marauders - and the romanticized history of piracy in the Caribbean - is exactly the type of history that attracted my attention as a younger student. I now know that the truth of life in the Caribbean during the so-called golden age of piracy was very different than this type of romanticized portrayal found in the game, but it still brings me back to the fun I had jumping from topic to topic as I sought out answers to questions that came up as I explore this time and place.

13. … with shoes in it.
Zombie Dice with the Double Feature expansion (5-18-21): This may seem like a strange fit for this category but the footprints on the dice clearly reflect people wearing shoes. I particularly focused on the Double Feature expansion, however, because the "Hottie" die shows footprints that reflects someone wearing high heels - so shoes are definitely a part of this game. This is not an amazing game, but it is a light fun game. We'll often play it while hanging out on our patio while our dogs play in the yard. It's a nice, light diversion....

14. … that fits your favourite prompt from 2016: A game designed by someone with the same initials as you.
[My initials are: ME]

15. … that fits your favourite prompt from 2017: A game that was one of the first 50 added to the BGG database.

16. … that fits your favourite prompt from 2018: A game that is played outside.
Okiya (4-30-21): We quite enjoy playing games on our patio, but they need to have a small footprint. This is a perfect game for outdoor play. The footprint is always small, but ours in a print-and-play version the publisher made available because of COVID. We've personalized it by coloring in the artwork and then laminating the pieces so they hold up better over time. Best of all, if there is ever an issue with the pieces, it's very easy to make up a replacement!

17. … that fits your favourite prompt from 2019: A game set at a random place on earth.
[A virtual dart landed at: DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO]

18. … that fits your favourite prompt from 2020: A game that is picked for you by other challenge members voting in a poll.
[I've selected 6 Kickstarters we've pledged for that should all be delivered in 2021. We're obviously interested in all of them, but we're not always fast to get new games played. The winning game will be played within 30 days of receiving the game. The games in the running are Burgle Bros 2: The Casino Capers, Intrepid, Mind MGMT: The Psychic Espionage “Game.”, Planet Unknown, Sleeping Gods, and Tiny Epic Pirates. The poll (see bottom of entry) closed on January 15th. I was a tight race between the two frontrunners with the lead going back and forth, but the winning game is Burgle Bros 2!]
Burgle Bros 2: The Casino Capers (6-5-21): I was in the second wave of US shipments, so I received the game on May 11th. I was focused on plant games in May for another challenge, so this sat for a few weeks, but we had a great time with it once it got to the table. I'm super nostalgic about the original Burgle Bros., so I'm not ready to find it a new home yet, but this may have replaced its older sibling. That said, I hate the over-produced box that I'll never use as a second floor "table", so this is one game where I'd love a down-graded storage option.

19. … that includes day and night.
The Lost Expedition (1-4-21): In thinking about this category, I realized I didn't own a lot of options for it. Of course, I had also forgotten that this game had these two phases until I brought it back to the table. That's probably because day/night aren't hugely thematic in how they play out....

20. … in a rural setting.
Mr. Cabbagehead's Garden (2-20-21): It's a rather creepy village community, but I think this game fit's the bill. I know a lot of people find the artwork creepy, byt I find it whimsical. Yes, it is creepy, but it's creepy in a Victoriana way that somehow works.

21. … that is a doorstopper (weighs at least 3 kg).

22. … with a VP track around the edge of the board.
Terraforming Mars (2-21-21): This was never going to be a particularly challenging category, so I have no great connection story here. This was the first game I played that fit this category aND not others. It is a favorite game, however, and I hope I get it back to the table again this year.

23. … you associate with a song.
Silver & Gold (1-2-21): I actually associate this game with two songs - both because of the game title. One is the Burl Ives Christmas song of the same name. The one that comes to mind even more frequently, however, is the Girl Scout song that goes, "Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver, and the other gold." I think this speaks more to how often we had to sing this during my short time in the Scouts than any great strength of the song, however.

24. … by an Asian designer.
Metro X (1-2-21): This is another case of this being the first game played that fir the category since I have a lot of options available for this one. This is a new-to-me game that my mom gave us for Christmas. It hasn't had much play yet, but I do see why it had a lot of buzz surrounding it.

25. … with a lot of air in the box.
Among the Stars (1-7-21): At this point, my box is reasonably full since I've added 3 expansions, but when I only had the base game, everything fit in one corner (other than the rulebook and score board). I understand that publishers are concerned with shelf presence (although this may be less of a concern with online shopping) and the box size signalling price (still a concern), but I hate the waste of both space and materials with largely empty game boxes.

26. … that is the first of 3 starting with the same letter.
[A random letter generator selected: P]
Palm Island (1-4-21): Another "first game I played situation". This is a great game for me to play while waiting for a flight in an airport (back when I did that) since you hold the cards the entire time. This is one of those games where I get what I need to do in order to do well, but I can't seem to make it happen. At some point, it will click, however....

27. … that is the second of 3 starting with the same letter.
[A random letter generator selected: P]
Pyramix (1-29-21): This is a quick, light game that my husband and I get surprisingly cutthroat with.
If I had to rehome a subset of our games, this is one that would probably make the list as it doesn't really stand out in any way.
That said, we always have a good time when it does hit the table, and for now we still have room not to worry about those hard culling decisions - we stick to the easy ones for now.

28. … that is the third of 3 starting with the same letter.
[A random letter generator selected: P]
Pie Factory (2-7-21): This isn't an amazing game, but it's light, has a different theme, and helped me meet some other challenge goals. Sometimes small games just stay on our shelves because they don't really get in the way. That's the case for me with this game. I wouldn't go out of my way to seek it out, but I also wouldn't turn down a game if someone wanted to play.

29. … that is language independent.
Divvy Dice (1-29-21): I've bought a lot of games in this series directly from Germany before Stronghold started to import them, and I may still pick up Bravo! that way if I can find it in stock at the same time as some other stuff I want to justify the shipping... The reason why I can do this is the games are language independent (rules aside) - a common theme with roll-and-writes. For whatever reason, this one clicked with me much faster than with my husband, so he keeps bringing it back to the table hoping it will click for him. Once it does, I'll likely never win it again!

30. … with a character who has a disability.
Horrified (5-3-21): I'm a huge advocate for diversity in gaming, and part of the means diverse visual representations of characters. Gender representation (at least within the traditional gender binary) is definitely improving. I'm also seeing efforts in terms of race/ethnicity - although we still have quite a ways to go. That said, there are still many areas we c old fo better with, and disability is one of these. We have a few games that feature people with disabilities, but I wanted to play Horrified for this category because I particularly like this example. One of the playable characters, the Mayor, is a woman who is a wheelchair-user. I particularly like that the game doesn't focus on this fact beyond visually depicting it. As Mayor, she's in a position of authority, and rather than being hampered by her use of a wheelchair, she actually seems to benefit as her special power is additional movement each turn. I hope to see more positive representations like this in the future.

31. … that has a randomly selected word in it.
[A random word generator selected: PASSENGER]

32. … with two articles in the title.
Exit: The Game – The Cemetery of the Knight (1-14-21): Not my favorite offering from this series, but it helped me over-achieve and play a game with 3 articles in the title.

33. … with a shape in the title.

34. … you should not have (played, bought, looked at…).
Würfelwurst (2-28-21): This is a silly little push-your-luck dice game that really has no business in our collection. It was an impulse purchase as a bit of a gag gift for my husband given his love of all things sausage. A small online retailer had a copy of Mister X for sale. It had been a bit of a grail game for my husband given his love of Scotland Yard from childhood. They also had this silly little import, so I picked it up at the same time. He continues to pull it off the shelf from time to time when he wants something that demands little in the way of thought. I may have had no business spending money on it, but I can't argue too hard about something that brings happiness and levity to hard days.

35. … with a time track.
Glasgow (7-11-21): I quite like a time-track. My partner loves a time track. We also really like puzzley 2-player games. We also like tile-laying. Given all of that, Glasgow seemed like a great fit for us, and a few plays confirmed my belief. There's nothing really new or amazing here, but it does what it does well in a small package with quick gameplay, so it's earned a place on our shelves.

36. … that was published in 2021.
Agropolis (5-13-21): Not only was this game published in 2021, it was played on the day I received it. A very rare occurrence! I've really enjoyed Sprawlopolis as a small solo game that travels well and offers me plenty of challenge. I'll fully admit to being bad at this game, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the puzzle, so I was excited to add some new variations by getting Agropolis. So far, I'm continuing my history of being bad at this game family, but I also still enjoy it quite a lot.

37. … with a family in it.
Chronicles of Crime (3-20-21): I don't want to spoil anything, but I think indicating there is at least one family in at least one case included in the game is generic enough to be safe territory. This game has been on my wishlist since it came out, but other games kept making it to the top of the purchase list. I'm so glad we finally got it this year. We binged the included cases, so now I'm watching for the DLC cases to go on sale.

38. … with something broken on the cover.
Holiday Hijinks #2: The Independence Incident (7-4-21): I had initially planned to play Hey, That's My Fish! for this since there's broken ice on the cover, but before that could happen, we played this 18-card escape game. It's centered around the history from the Revolutionary War period in the US, and the cracked Liberty Bell is on the cover. I bought this to support a creative endeavor by a small publisher, but I ended up being very impressed with how much game was packed into those 18 cards (and website). I'll definitely be buying more of these Holiday Hijinks games as they come out!

39. … about art or an artist.
Sagrada (1-2-21): I've lived leaded-glass since I was in pre-school and we had a neighbor who did this as a hobby. Clearly, the Sagrada Familia is on a much larger scale, and the dice version much less permanent, but it's still very satisfying to look at the "window" I've built at the end of the game.

40. … with a (dark) academia theme.

41. … with climate.
Star Wars: Unlock! (1-9-21): I'll avoid spoilers, but you can tell from the box cover (and a scenario title) that one offering in this collection is set on Hoth. As you might expect, the frozen climate does play a role in the story...

42. … with or about music.

43. … that was crowdfunded.
The One Hundred Torii (1-2-21): We have a lot of games that fit this category. We live tile laying, and the art totally drew us in. I keep getting more and more restrictive on what I'll fund, so this game probably wouldn't make the cut today, but we are enjoying having it in our collection.

44. … that leaves you thinking.
Letters from Whitechapel (1-1-21): There are a number of ways that one could interpret this category - this game fits a few of them for me. First, it does fuel my speculation about the Ripper killings (helped in part by relatively recent coverage on two podcasts I listen to: Unobscured and Death by Monsters). Second, both my partner and I leave the table speculating about what we can do differently/better next time to confuse and catch/evade our opponent next time. Third, playing this game has made me think about why I love playing the detectives, have no desire to ever play Jack, and really enjoy the multi-night format of this game compared to the single chase format of Mister X.

45. … with exactly three words in the title.
Abandon All Artichokes (1-1-21): There's no great story here, It was the 2nd game I played this year, and it fit this category but no others. It's light and silly, but if I can ever get back to gaming with colleagues over lunch on Fridays, this will be a perfect fit for that group.

46. … that was a designer's first game.
Morels (2-12-21): This is the first published design by Brent Povis. Most of my gaming is done 2-player with my spouse, so a 2-player only game that has good buzz tends to grab my attention. That was the case with this game, and I was able to hop on board with the kickstarter for the printing of the expansion. This is not the type of game that does well on kickstarter these days, but I'm glad it was able to find an audience.

47. … by the designer of a game used to fulfill another category.
Longhorn (4-18-21): Bruno Cathala is one of our favorite designers (games also used for #8 and #16). He has a real knack for designing games that have enough depth they make you think, while still being short enough that you can easily fit them in when life is busy. His games also generally play very well with two - or only play with two. This one is a particular favorite of mine, but my partner generally does poorly with it, so it doesn't get played often. One day oh, it will click for him, and I will never win again oh, so I'm going to enjoy my success while I can.

48. … that includes an abbey, church or vicarage.
The Castles of Burgundy (1-3-21): I honestly didn't remember that a church was one of the buildings in this game until one came out in our last round. This has been a favorite game for a long time, but it's come to the table too rarely of late. I need to change that during 2021.

49. … that is about transportation.
Rail Pass (7-12-21): There is no shortage of transportation games in the board game hobby. I have a particular soft spot for pick-up-and-deliver games. This game is a strange mix of cooperative, real-time, dexterity, and pick-up-and-deliver. On the surface, it shouldn't work at all. In practice, however, I find it really fun. At first, my partner was a bit intimidated by what all needed to happen. By the time we have played through it a few times, however, he was on board and was already starting to think about more complex routes we could set up for future games. I'll put this one in the win column in terms of our purchase...as well as in terms of our actual play.

50. … with royalty in it.
Similo: History (1-30-21): We have the three sets of this currently released in the US, and we quite enjoy them. I quite like the creativity that comes when you mix two sets together so you're guessing from within one set using clues from another. I've actually played the Fables version quite a lot over Zoom with my students during the pandemic when we need a fun bonding activity. I'm hoping the animals decks hit the US earlier enough in 2021 that I can try them out in this format before the end of the spring semester. The Myths and History sets are just too challenging with the Zoom picture clarity and screen size to use that way.

51. … with an oxymoron in the title.
Tiny Epic Defenders (5-15-21): I'm quite curious to see what everyone ends up with for this category,
But I'm expecting a lot of Tiny Epics... This is not a well-loved part of this series, but I quite enjoy it - particularly as a solo game. I also really like what the Dark War expansion adds to the game...even if it means its no longer quite as portable.

52. … with hearts, clubs, spades or diamonds on the cover.

For prompt #18, I want you to select the game I'll play.

But I'll try to use games I played not enough yet wherever possible.
