Parlett: "What could be simpler than a game of perfect information where you deal the cards out in a row and then pick them up one by one? (Or two, or three, as the case may be.) Simple? Yes - but there's more to this Nim-type game than meets the eye."

Board Game: Anarchy
Parlett: "Anarchy may be described as a fast and furious parody of trick-taking games, the point being that you all play at once instead of going through the laborious and time-consuming process of taking turns - which of course is undemocratic, conferring an unearned privilege on whoever goes first, and being therefore suitable only for the decadent entertainment of a hierarchic-élitist society."

Parlett: "The novelty of this Hearts-type game is that the penalty suit isn't fixed in advance. Instead, you each declare before play which suit you will try to avoid taking any of. This is your 'bug suit'. The fun lies in trying to offload the appropriate bug suits on one another's tricks."

Board Game: Caterpillar
Parlett: "One of my earliest games, this only failed to appear in the first edition of Original Card Games because I felt it to be rather shallow, and in any case I don't much care for games where you have to keep writing scores down as you go along. (But you could use a Cribbage board, counting each hole as 5 instead of 1.) I've since discovered it to be more interesting than I thought, especially in deciding when best to play your face cards (King, Queen, Jack) and when to withhold them."

10. Board Game: Chwech [Average Rating:6.53 Unranked]
Board Game: Chwech
Parlett: ""Chwech" may look - and indeed sound - like someone clearing their throat, but it is in fact the Welsh for "six". Here's the story. I was once asked to devise a card game specifically for six players. It first appeared in my book Original Card Games under a title which is the Latin word for "six". Not wishing to fall foul of censoring software I have since translated its title into Welsh. (The "ch" is pronounced as in "loch"). To my surprise, several unrelated groups of card-players still enthuse over it, so it must be worth perpetuating."

Board Game: Collusion
Parlett: "The point of this simple but fun trick-taking game for four (one of my favourites) is that you can keep making and breaking partnership agreements with other players in the course of each deal, even from trick to trick. I originally called it Collusion, then changed it to Cahoots, but have now gone back to Collusion. After a recent replay, Nigel Parker came up with the splendid alternative subtitle "Dangerous Liaisons"."

15. Board Game: Cross Purposes [Average Rating:7.40 Unranked]
Board Game: Cross Purposes
Parlett: "Cross Purposes is a trick-taking game played with a 52-card pack basically ranking AKQJ1098765432 in each suit. In each deal, one player or partnership chooses a trump suit and the other chooses a 'top rank', thus exercising a variable and contrary dimension of trick-taking power. Whatever rank is chosen as 'tops', the others follow it in descending sequence, turning the corner from Ace to King as necessary. For example, if Eights are tops, then in each suit the ranking order of cards from high to low is 8765432AKQJ109. Though designed for two, it makes an interesting partnership game for four."

19. Board Game: Duck Soup [Average Rating:6.74 Unranked]
Board Game: Duck Soup
Parlett: "There is a point to this game, but I've forgotten what it is. However, I am pleased to report the receipt of two entirely unsolicited testimonials of appreciation. One, from a German card-player, reads: "I've just came from a one-week-holiday were I learned Duck soup and I enjoyed it a lot. Never thought a two-player trick-taking game can work so well! I'm so excited that I started to translate the rules of the rest of your games into German, so I can try out more games with my friends (which dont speak english so well)." The other one has gone missing, unfortunately, but the writer said he and his partner had been playing it for a couple of years and still find it fun. (Incidentally, for anyone not old enough to remember, "duck soup" means "dead easy" - besides being something you call out when a waiter goes berserk and starts throwing things around.)"

21. Board Game: Flunk [Average Rating:6.50 Unranked]
Board Game: Flunk
Parlett: "Flunk is a sort of Dummy Contract Whist for three. It doesn't claim to be a form of Bridge. Three-handed Bridge is a contradiction in terms, as it lacks co-operative bidding between the partners, which is one of the two defining features of that game. But it does offer its other defining feature, namely, that of declarer's playing from dummy with a view to selecting a trump suit (or announcing no trump) and declaring a contract."

Board Game: Galapagos
Parlett: "The full name of this game is 'Galloping Galapagos', which sounds like some sort of exclamation. Galapagos is the Spanish for 'tortoises' and the name of a group of Pacific Islands largely inhabited by these reptiles. This game runs faster than tortoises, however, and is only so called because it started out as an elaboration of Gops. (Gops > gallops > galapagos.) It has since become a three-part compendium game, in which, however, you can play each part with a strategic view to the ensuing one."
