To mark the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Everest, the Nepalese Government conferred honorary citizenship upon Hillary at a special Golden Jubilee celebration in Kathmandu. He was the first foreign national to receive such an honour from the Nepalese.
1958 saw Hilary first visit the south pole. It was not originally intended that Hillary would travel as far as the South Pole, but when he had completed laying supply depots he saw the opportunity to beat the British and continued south, reaching the Pole. Probably caused a bit of a rumble!
Sir Edmund Hillary despite his many great accomplishments remained a down to earth individual. He was originally a bee keeper before he became famous. Throughout his life he always remained down to earth and played down his accomplishments. He embodies many of the characteristics that are thought of highly in New Zealand; loyalty, generosity, straight forwardness etc. He will be missed particularly in NZ but also around the world.
