This is a list of the enablers of our gaming addiction, the people and places that jump-started and accelerated our ascent (or decline?) to where we are know in this obsession.

This list includes games. This list however is not about the games, though games are what we crave, the drugs that feed our addiction. No, this list is about people and places, the “pushers” of these games. The list that follows is a semi-fictionalized description of the major facilitators on my path to addiction, in some sort of chronological order.

I suspect that everyone else has a similar list. These are the commonalities that we all share, that have brought us together here. These are the steps in the vicious cycle that has taken from interesting well-balanced and fairly normal adults, to obsessive, sleep-deprived neurotics. If we’re not up all night playing games, we’re up all night online here on BGG, or up re-reading the game rules, or up thinking about our last game. Yup, we’re a mess now thanks to these agitators.

I suspect this list is incomplete. Feel free to add to it, the things that have facilitated, accommodated and enabled your own addiction.

My local game store

For me, this is where it all started: the local corner pusher, the comfortable old friend. This is where I first noticed that section across from the Hasbro games. "Hey, these don't look like Monopoly or Scrabble." This is where I was first introduced to that "gateway" game, in my case, Ticket to Ride. The local game store represents the beginning of my addiction, where things first changed from casual interest to mild obsession. Even now, this is where I still go when I need a quick fix, where the tactile, tangible aspect of all of those games usually leads to that sudden, completely impulsive purchase. Like everything on this list, I need to avoid this place. I am weak.

Well, quite honestly, this is it, the big Kahuna. This may not be where it started, but it is where my addiction truly took hold. Without a doubt, BGG is the biggest single cause of my descent into this whole world of Geekdom. This is the kerosene poured on my small gamer's campfire, the grease on the playground slide I am about to descend, the turbocharger placed into the engine of the small motor of my gaming. "OMG, how many games are listed here???? They even RANK these games: look at this Puerto Rico game in first place" Well yes, in fact, Puerto Rico was my first real purchase after visiting BGG, my entry to the big leagues and my jump to hardcore drugs. I still come back for more, I can't resist. I've wasting countless hours online here. I can't stop. I am weak.

The mail-order website

These places are like upgrading from dial-up to a T1 line. Now I don't buy one or two games, I buy IN BULK. Kinda like Costco or Sam's Club for gamers. And boy, do they know how to hook us. Huge prices cuts and that insidious "free shipping on orders greater than ....." They have shamelessly taken advantage of my obsession with this free shipping thing, and have facilitated the recent logarithmic increase in my game collection. Thoughthammer was the first to violate me in this way, and is still my true first love. Samurai was included in this first order, along with El Grande, Blue Moon City, and five others to get me over that magic $125 mark. I keep a wish list with them, those Sirens, awaiting my next moment of weakness. And boy, I am weak.

eBay

"Hey look, someone is selling their copy of Java. You know, it's out of print. I love Tikal and I'm getting Mexica for Christmas, right? This will totally complete my Mask Trilogy." And so it started. I'm pathetic when it comes to a restrained bidding approach for this stuff. I over-payed to get Java and I over-payed to get the first two of the Mystery Rummy series that are now out of print. eBay is like the candy man for all those out of print games that are so highly rated here on BGG and are soooo hard to find. And look, BGG has eBay listings right on the home page. I swear, this a conspiracy, and all of you are in it together. eBay has now got an icon on my desktop for easy access. I am weak.

Tanga

"Holy crap, how can anyone sell these games so cheaply? Look at this, RA for $9.99. It's even on my list." Tanga also has an icon on my desktop for faster access. I check it ALL the time. I waste countless hours in pathetic attempts to solve puzzles that I am hopeless at, I can't help myself. The "current deal" changes at a moments notice, adding a sense of urgency to my already hopeless obsession. These guys are masters, professionals in the art of facilitating my addiction. I am weak.

My son

Ah, my son: 12 years old, precocious, bright, and engaging, and a true accommodator of my addiction. His favorite game right now is the Fury of Dracula--he loves to play the Count and does so in true gothic style. He is a master at Railroad Tycoon--we always let him go first because he's "the youngest;" he always wins. He really rocks at The Downfall of Pompeii; and at Ticket to Ride: Märklin Edition; and at Pitchcar; and at Alhambra. He will never turn down an offer to play. How can I resist, I am weak.

My gaming group

My list chronologically ends here. This gaming group thing just started for me, and Age of Empires III: the Age of Discovery was my first fix. I can tell already that this is the next big accommodator of my deepening addiction. Now I'm spending time with like-minded obsessives, all of us validating each others addictions. I'm playing those games that I really want to now, unencumbered by the "it's too long," or the "the rules look too complicated" crowd that normally surrounds me. I'm planning, thinking and obsessing about my next fix. I'm a wreck. I am truly weak.

One addiction leads to another & leads to another.

In the summer of 77, I was at the shore & got adicted to some arcade type games. Eventually, I spent all my money & played enough Pokerino & Skeeball to be able to claim my first war game.

Eventually, I joined a local gaming club & spent too much $ on more & more games.

Later on I discovered CCGs. Wow, at $2 a pack (after getting a starter) they must be cheaper than a $60 board game. right? shake
