One of the things that intrigues me about war gaming is the strategy of moving units as a part of an overall battle plan. The advent of long range ballistic weapons made a lot of this type of strategizing obsolete. Is there a game that uses the simplicity of tactical movement without the threat of long range weaponry? I'm not talking about catapults or trebuchets, as they didn't hurl explosive projectiles.

I'd like to find a board/war game that works like Age of Empires up to the medieval age. In other words, line of sight battles, where generals used maneuvering and terrain as the basis for their primary tactical planning. Unfortunately, it's difficult to use this to its maximum advantage on a board because we have the advantage of the birds-eye viewpoint. I was just hoping that was a game out there that was based in the medieval era. Any help on this would certainly be appreciated.

Commands & Colors: Ancients is not medieval but sounds like it would fit the bill.

I used to love this one.
It's tactical, so, with counters representing individuals (Spearman, Helbardier, Knight and so on).
There are Bowmen and more deadlier, but slowly reloading Crossbowmen in it.

Scenarios tend to be small, but it's a lot of fun as most of the people bear individual names.
