One of my favorite TV shows has quickly become "The Good Life" after watching all of the episodes. The women characters are my favorite, but the way they all interact makes this show brilliant.

So, this geeklist combines two of my favorite things.

The Leadbetter Family

As the two families represent a bit of the "city mouse, country mouse" story, the Leadbetters would be the city side. They have social clubs, play golf, and Jerry commutes into London for work.

Margo Leadbetter

Margo can seem uptight (she is my favorite character, though). However, Margo does have a good laugh in "The Windbreak War." She even started it.

[Margo and Jerry are at their neighbors while the Goods are away]
Jerry: Come and have a cuddle?
Margo: Jerry, please. It's broad daylight. We're in somebody else's house. No, I'm sorry.

Margo can be a bit starchy, very formal, and the others like to mock her. Still, she does have a more human side, and is very smart.

[Margo, to the workman who's come in to put up a windbreak]
Margo: Did you, or did you not see a pale blue envelope cellotaped to the handle of your pick-axe this morning?
Arthur Bailey: Yes, I did.
Margo: And what was written on that envelope?
Arthur Bailey: N.B.
Margo: Well?
Arthur Bailey: Well, I'm not N. Bailey. I'm Arthur Bailey. A.B.
Margo: You stupid man!
Arthur Bailey: You can't talk to me like that.
Margo: I can, because I pay your wages, and get off my carpet. For your information Mr. Bailey, N.B. means Nota Bene.
Arthur Bailey: Who?
Margo: It's Latin.
Arthur Bailey: Oh. Well, I come from Balham.
Margo: Very well. The fact that you come from Balham probably does excuse your ignorance of even elementary Latin. It does not excuse ignoring a written instruction which is sellotaped to the handle of your pick-axe.
Arthur Bailey: Written instructions are for white collar workers. I'm manual.
Margo: I see. So unless a sign reads: "Keep off the grass, Mr. Bailey, and all other manual workers", you ignore it, do you?
Arthur Bailey: I didn't mean that.
Margo: Well, what do you mean Mr. Bailey?
Arthur Bailey: I mean it's up now. It's a fait accompli.
Margo: Oh, so we know French in Balham, but no Latin?

Jerry Leadbetter

Jerry's the working man of the family, caught up in the corporate world.

Margo: I'd sooner pay the electricity bill.
Jerry: I'd sooner you pay the electricity bill.
Margo: Meaning Jerry?
Jerry: Sometimes when I come home, our house looks like the Blackpool Illuminations.

After Jerry spends half an hour or more on London Bridge on his way home, he likes to relax by listening to music and eating takeout.

[Margo is leaving for the evening, leaving Jerry alone]
Margo: Now, your dinner.
Jerry: That's right. I got some Indian takeaway.
Margo: Then will you kindly eat it in the kitchen with the extractor fan full on? The last time, this upholstery reeked of vindaloo for over a week. Good night, Jerry.
[After Margo leaves, Jerry takes off the lid from the takeaway container and waves his hand over it to disperse the aroma.]

Sir/Andy

Jerry's boss (and used to be Tom's boss) appears occasionally, but isn't much of an interesting character to me.

Sir: As I said when you left the company, I said, of course, a lot of people think that this self sufficiency is just a dream, you know, but here's a man with the guts and the determination to make it work.
Tom: Actually, you didn't use those words. You said I was a mindless idiot who'd come crawling back in three weeks.

The Good Family

The Goods decided to be self sufficient and, by the end of the series, have turned their garden (yard) into a vegetable garden, also grow fruit, and have chickens, pigs, and goats. They have their own system for generating electricity, have a wood range, and a weaving loom.

Barbara Good

Barbara, for me, is the most difficult to describe. She's loyal, hard-working, loves her husband (and his sense of humor) and is clever herself. I think she'd like Carcassonne because there's thinking involved, but not too much-- she doesn't strike me as a meaty gamer (that would be Tom-- but he couldn't sit still long enough).

[Tom has just proposed his idea of self-sufficiency (in the first episode)]
Tom: What do you think?
Barbara: I need to think.
Tom: Garden?
Barbara: Yes.
Tom: [fetches wellies] Right. Left. Coat.
Barbara: Coat.
[leaves to pace in the garden]
Tom: Piece of cake?
Barbara: No thank you.
[continues pacing]
Barbara: Do you want to sell up and buy a small holding in the country to do this?
Tom: No, this isn't meant to be the full going back to nature thing, besides we love this house too much to sell it.
Barbara: Self-sufficiency in Surbiton.
Tom: Yes, I know it'll make the avenue look a bit odd.
Barbara: No no.
[continues pacing]
Barbara: I couldn't kill chickens.
Tom: Alright, I'll chop their heads off with my black and decker while you're not looking.
Barbara: [continues pacing] What happens when we need new clothes?
Tom: I'll have made the loom by then. With the wool from the goat.
Barbara: No no.
[finishes pacing]
Tom: Well? Well?
Barbara: You're on.
Tom: What?
Barbara: We'll do it.
Tom: Now, have you thought about this?
Barbara: What do you think I've been doing? Taking my wellies for a walk?

As I was making this list, I realize I don't know much about Barbara. What does she like to do? She doesn't golf, attend the music society, enjoy listening to music like the others. But she is about the house frequently. And she does like to dress up occasionally-- hence the posh frock. But she has a charmingly fierce and stubborn side as well.

[Barbara is in tears at the thought of having to move]
Margo: Loyal, passive Barbara. Very well, I shall tell Tom myself.
Barbara: [jumps up, no longer in tears] You take one more step and I'll drop you where you stand.
Margo: Barbara!
Barbara: Yes, I may be smaller than you but I'm a better fighter.

Tom Good

Overall, I find Tom a rather silly character (annoying silly at times, but on the whole, I can put up with him and even laugh at his lines). I imagine he would enjoy party games (after all, who suggested games at the Christmas party?)

[Margo and Tom are drunk on homemade wine]
Margo: [sobbing] I'm not a complete woman!
Tom: Aren't you?
Margo: I haven't got a sense of humour!
Tom: Don't worry, Margo, I'll go and get you one!

Tom has a lot of funny lines and some funny physical comedy as well. My favorite bit is when he and Margo are shopping and he's making faces at her through the shop window.

[Tom after reading his 40th birthday card from his wife]
Tom: When I get a birthday card from my wife, I expect a loving, sickly verse. Not "Another nail in your coffin you old wreck!"

The Chickens

Chickens are one of the Good's first animal enterprises. Lenin was the cockerel, and Barbara named several of the hens as well (I remember an Olivia).

[They do eat their chickens, although Barbara refused to kill them-- that was Jerry's job]
Margo: Did I hear a dinner gong?
Tom: Not unless the chicken jumped out of the oven and banged one.

The Goat

The Goods walk their goat, Geraldine, as someone might walk a dog: on a leash, through town. Tom got her to their house in Jerry's station wagon-- he crawled out of the back with the goat.

The Pigs

The Goods acquire two pigs, Pinky and Perky, which cause some strife with their neighbors. Even Jerry says of them "I think they're horrible smelly creatures but I'd rather have Tom and Barbara as friends with pigs than not friends without them."

[After Tom brings home a crate with two pigs... rescued from the butcher]
Tom Good: Now listen, if you ever let on that I didn't make it and you're not Pinky and Perky, it's sausage time.

The best thing about the Good Life for me is that it provided Paul Eddington with the platform to go on and star in "Yes Minister" and "Yes Prime Minister".

It was a natural progression for "Jerry" to go on and become a Cabinet Minister and then Prime Minister.
