"80s, living in the 80s" : Games from the Reagan era

In honor of my recently passed 40th birthday, I thought I'd set the wayback machine for the Reagan era and take a look at some of the games I played while I was supposed to be doing my homework.
I had two different groups of people that I gamed with, with a bit of overlap. One group has fallen by the wayside over the years, the other group is still in touch (or at least to the extent that busy people who live in different states can be), and I still game with a few of them.
Of course, there were other games as well - AD&D, Merc, Champions, Top Secret, and other RPGs - but they aren't really BGG items.

While I haven't played some of these games in years, I do remember them as an important part of my youth.

1. Board Game: Car Wars [Average Rating:6.34 Overall Rank:2068]
Aaaah, the hand cut counters, the b&w maps that creased and bumped your cars, the desire to drive a lethal minivan....

Eventually, though, the Car Wars fixation was replaced by a game of fighting mechs, with stand up card pieces...

2. Board Game: BattleTech [Average Rating:6.98 Overall Rank:849]
I remember playing this at Nation's (an all night burger place) after work at night, so we wouldn't annoy anyone's parents.
"Buy some more fries, they look like they may be getting ready to ask us to leave."

Eventually, we were asked not to play in the restaurant anymore.

How many hours, how many days, did I spend at Erik's playing this one?

Just one more card set in and the world is mine! (wait, sounds like an ominous precursor to CCGs)

5. Board Game: Squad Leader [Average Rating:7.48 Overall Rank:473]
Desperate battles against carboard commies.

Hill 621 (iirc), over and over again.

While I owned all of the SL games at one point, I didn't really ever play the others (maybe one or two COI scenarios) - but did love to set up huge battles by setting up mapboards and counters and having "no rules" battle recreations of whatever book I was reading.

Dad bought me this, instead of the DM's Guide I asked him for.
We even played a game or two (or at least tried) before the pieces started coming up missing.
This one was just too complex for a tween!

The other thing I remember about this one was the pink kool-aid stain on the map.

I think I bought this around 1982. My friends and i proceeded to play the hell out of it for the next five or six years. We even got a couple of seven-player games in there.

Eventually people began to move away, get married, drop out of sight. I think I've played Civ once in the last fifteen years.

Ah well. Those were the days.

This is when I discovered the wargaming version of crack.

I have easily logged more hours of WiF than any other game and probably more than the next 10 combined.

-Rolling for weather
-Needing the turn to go on one more impulse
-Passing and desperately needing the turn to end in Russia
-The US 10-6 armor overrunning a flipped IT INF in Africa
-Rolling snake eyes and blowing an ME-262 out of the air
-Pushing RU to the brink, failing and then running like hell
-Surprising four carriers in the Pacific
-Late turn surface raiding in the North Atlantic
-Having the CH FTR kill a JA escort and aborting the bomber
-1:1 on Gibraltar
-Wartime Production
-Picking a RU INF and getting the 3-2 INF instead of the white print 8-4.
-Declaring war as the US and playing the Star Spangled Banner on the boombox.

Those were the days.....

This game was what Monopoly was in the 1930s and Scrabble in the 1950s... a game NO store could keep in stock for long! Granted, Agricola may be that way when it's released in North America - you won't ever find that at Walmart or Toys R Us though...

It was to board games (and Baby Boomers) what Cabbage Patch Kids (another 1980s craze) were to the toddler set.

Although it actually came out in 1979, I didn't have this game until 1980.

I thought it was a great game at the time - I'd love to try it again, but alas I've lost it in the intervening decades.

It was published in 1979, but I was definitely playing it in the 80s, as well as the expansions, Starfire II and Starfire III, Empires.

In many ways, Starfire was SFB-lite, though the campaign game was quite different.

Task Force Games put out a few other classics that I played in the 80s, including Asteroid Zero-Four and Super Giant Monster Showdown: Cybernetic Attachments.

The other classic company I played a bunch of games from (cause they were also cheap) was Metagaming, specifically they're "Microgames" including Ogre, G.E.V., Dimension Demons and more.

The other (than Nuclear War, already mentioned) card game that we played a lot in the 80s. Sinking fleets rather than killing pop, but it was all fun. Minefields, though, were rather nasty, as were destroyer squadrons... I remember those.
