Card driven wargames are fun, fast and many of them have the exciting appeal of "so many things to do and I can only play one card" effect. O.k, they're great games, but they're not perfect and they're becoming a monopolistic view of strategic scope games.

This geeklist is to reivindicate the positive points of non card driven games. I think they have their right to be played too and do not deserve so many low ratings based on "Its a good game, but I preffer X" (change the X for the apropiated card driven name) comentaries.

They have a lot of good thinkings and feelings to offer. ¡Lets preserve them!

Resources

When you don't produce units by playing cards, you usually get resource hexes (or regions) in the game map and holding these hexes rewards you with production capability. You launch a Caucasus campaign not to get those two VPs, but because you need its oil. Also, is not the same to lose a victory city in Turkey than lossing the Rhur.

Destruction of enemy economy.

As a consecuence of a resource based game the destruction of the enemy economy is the main objective of many tradicitonal strategic games and that is not posible in card driven games when all of the countries can build, move and atack at the same efectiveness when they're complete or when they have lost one half of their territory.
Also, strategic warfare loses its sense in CDGs.

Go to the marketplace phase.

One of the most fun and awaited phases of resource oriented games is the production phase. In this phase you get a huge ammount of production points and you have a lot of beautiful units to build (“Er…give me those two armored units, and some air, and a battleship too…”. The card driven game usually gives your reinforcements by card play.

A lot of units to move.

O.k. a low quantity of units speed up games, but…what a pleasure when you get a huge amount of units to move and you have the feel of being directing both the strategic level decisions and the tactical maneuvers on the front. But lots of units and cards are not compatible and CDG tend to be minimalistic.

Diplomacy.

I know there are some multiplayer card driven games, but the huge amount of them are two player. In all cases, the lack of an economy system restricts the diplomatic interests and posibilities in those games.

Leader activation.

If units are activated by card play they’re not activated by leaders and the capabilities of the army or wing commanders are lost. There are some card driven games that gives to the player a number of cards on hand based on diferent cards on hand, but that looks to me too weak and abstract to feel in the game the presence of a great general like Napoleon or Alexander.

Trade.

If all is managed by playing cards on hand there’s nothing to trade off.

Simultaneous movement.

A fun and interesting play system that is not compatible with card driven ones.

Stealth movement.

If movement is directed by cards revealed to the other player it makes no sense to move units on a stealth board.

Compressed PBEM play.

The IGOUGO system of play allow a player to do a lot of action on his turn before summit the file to his adversary. The card driven game is made of piecemeal actions that multiplies the number of file exanges needed to complete a game.
Also, the need of holding secred cards on hand makes it more dificult to manage and play a PBEM game.

Luckless games

If you like to win or lose a game basing only on your skills you can't do it with a card drive system because the drawing of cards is a powerful factor of luck.
