Well it's a new year, the dead of winter for many of us. A time when a grogard's heart turns to ... the game on their table of course.

I've always enjoyed sharing my table and reading about others' so here's a list for January 2008.

Please comment and add your titles. Let us know what you've recently played, are playing now, or foresee playing in the near future.

Game on !

Well after an orgy of CDG goodness the last couple months, having gotten a copy of We the People and Hannibal, my mind has returned th the American Civil War.

I was looking forward to the release of Price of Freedom ... a strategic CDG of the Civil War that's playable ? !

And

I'd become interested in AtO's title "Not War but Murder"

but

The budget ...

Then I remembered, I had "Grant Takes Command" sitting in shrink on my shelf. I'd picked it up in November at a good price, in the midst of the CDG binge and there it sat.

Well it's sitting no more. I love the GCACW series, and now have all the titles except On to Richmond (budget !).

I admit, I play with the "original" rules, let's say Roads to Gettysburg with updated artillery, flank refused and now Grant's entrenchment rules (for 1864). I've tried the new exhaustion rules ... meeh, they're OK but I've got the game pretty memorized in it's original form.

I'm breaking the ice with the well regarded Race to Spotsylvania scenario But it'll be time to move on to something meatier soon.

Suggestions? I'm thinking the Bethany Church and Burnside Takes Command scenarios (oh, you know I have both Skirmisher issues ) are in my near future.

Honorable mention.

As I noted above, This classic and Vallye Game's reprint of Hannibal have been occupying my table for a couple months now.

That's not to say the games take a long time, quite the opposite ... I've just been playing the hell out of them.

This should have been on the table earlier this week, mano-a-mano with my boy Glen (BGG's charismatic and oh so wise (cracking) "manhattandoctor"). But fate, in the form of puke* intervened.

* it's remarkable how often fate choose to intervene as puke. But that's a discussion best left for another time.

At any rate, We the People - the best purchase I've made in years ... and I've made some fantastic purchases my friends. I sincerely hope this gets reprinted so more people can enjoy it.

A lighter, multiplayer wargame that's hit the table three or four times in the past month is Kevin McPartland's CoP.

It's a game I want to love. I really do, but it's so hard to teach to "regular" gamers. They're so used to "elegant" designs, games with four pages of rules and deep game play that straight forward, explore, expand, and occasionally engage in combat seems difficult to grasp.

And transport canoes ... why are these so hard for people to understand?

Long story short, I hope to play it with a group that has come to understand the rules, so we can all just explore the game and its potential.

Its set up now and I'm trying to learn the rules. It's very unique and kind of counter-intuitive. I think it has a lot of potential once it finally clicks. It's a huge board and one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen once it's all set up.

Hopefully I actually get it played soon.

Currently on my table I am playing solo and I am about to start turn 8 (of 9). The germans have a strong defence in the south and in center-south, but the Russians have blown the north and are about to race for the Victory cities. The problem is I chosed the "historical" chits for the Russians (the ones recommended for 1st play in the RB) and they have just the STAVKA for activation!

Greatest moment (up to turn 7): When on turn 6 the Germans surrounded and put out of supply the whole 1st GD army (maybe the use of so many resources to achieve this left the north unsupported, Ouch!).

Next on the table: I am in serious doubt between the following (all of them solo):

ASLSK #2: I haven't tried the Guns yet (I've only played the infantry only scenarios).

A House Divided: I love this game, and I got the stickers to correct the map a few months ago and I still have not gotten it to the table.

Panzer Grenadier: I have the first edition, never got to play it properly, but a recent geeklist has made my interest rise to give it a try.

World in Flames: I want to start a game through VASSAL with fellow BGG members (see the thread).

Here I Stand: Got this game from the Xmas sale of GMT and I haven't even read the rules, maybe I'll display it, read the rules and try to learn it that way.

A lot of choices!!!

Of course, this isn't really a wargame, but the last game I played ended in Nuclear War.

Its round 2 of the BGG 2007 ACTs tournament, and after the USSR blew themselves up I'm just left with my game against the USA. Looks like a communist triumph, but he has managed to hold out until the Late War...

My first game as the Protestants. Queen Mary has come to power in England but it looks quite likely England will win the game beacause of Protestant home spaces despite Mary's best efforts.

Meanwhile the Ottomans have out-maneuvred the Hapsburgs to take Vienna but are now down to a single card against 6 in the Hapsburg hands.

It was my New Years resolution to get this back out onto the table. I picked the shorter hypothetical 1932 scenario to play.
After 5 days and sporadic playing the first 12 turns and only 13 ships sunk, I decided I need to get crooked dice.

I got this in a trade last year (maybe late 2006), and am just now getting a chance to give it a try - via VASSAL.

So far, I like the system - but my first playing (as the allies) is going very, very poorly. I think the dice hate me! But I'm still enjoying the process, which is nice.

A recent addition to the Panzer Grenadier system, this time featuring the Poles. Played the "Weapons of Mass Destruction" scenario (the Poles get some chemical mines), and it went down to the last turn (German victory). Looking forward to trying out some other scenarios, and giving those pathetic-looking Pz I's a whirl.

My wife and I just played our first game of Commands and Colors: Ancients two days ago. The Battle of Akragas, using my new fully-mounted board from Expansion #2 (also picked up Expansion #3!). She commanded her Syracusan army to a 5-3 victory over my Sons of Carthage, finishing me off by retreating one of my heavy chariot units off the edge of the board (requiring me to shed my last block)! We both greatly enjoyed the game, and it is already reset to replay this one, with us switching sides for the 2nd game.

Currently playing this solo using rules from the Perfect Captain. Not as "broken" as many claim and enjoyable once rules problems are fixed. Good illustration of strategic problems faced by England and Spain.

Hoping for a revival with "Elizabeth: The Golden Age".

It's now on the virtual table right after coming off the dining room table. As Nap I've been burning cards left and right, and not sure I have much to show for it. I am enjoying the way it is kind of a card game and a wargame together, a little different than other CDG.

One thing it's done is made me look even more forward to the release of The Price of Freedom: The American Civil War 1861-1865, which appears to be a similar style in the ACW. Woot.
