I think about games too much, so I thought instead of doing something productive, I would create a list of the games I have thought about too much!

Bonus points for thinking about it without having ever played it!

If only I could stop thinking about Diplomacy tactics, I might have gotten an A on my senior essay which was, of course, about Diplomacy tactics. A certain alliance between Germany, Italy, and Austria to be exact. How cool that I actually got away with writing that.

While Diplomacy lasted for quite a few years, Age of Steam did not. But, for a few weeks after my first go through playing it, I would think about how I would play better next time. Next time still hasn't come, but I did play Railroad Tycoon 2(on the computer) for a while, because shipping goods is highly addictive!

Somewhere along the line, I got into Acquire. I thought a lot about this, and though I did develop a pretty good strategy, and got to put it into practice, I still didn't win. Bummer! Guess I'm not as smart as I thought! Or, I just didn't draw the right tiles to fulfill the fantasy of mergers...

Played this one four-player and wanted to play it again since. Now I own it and play it two-player once in a while with my wife. But, after I first played it, I kept thinking about how to stack my units better, how to focus on getting points rather than mining, and generally how to play better than my opponents. Never had that rematch.

After Age of Steam came Parthenon, another short lived game. I played it one and a half times. Was extremely fun, but I again continued to try and come up with a way to play better. But, plans in this game often fail due to the luck involved, so the brain just can't wrap itself around it sufficiently.

This game, I read the rules over and was extremely intrigued. It combined all my favorite things - stock ownership, European wars, and making money! Before I ever got to play, I would imagine how the system would work, how I would invest more wisely than anyone else on the board...

This seemed to work to my advantage, as when it came to BSW, I took to it like a duck to water. Maybe all those strategy articles on the Geek helped.

What an amazing system! No luck, just have to take the action before the other players. The solo variant, family style, is amazing to play to get an idea of what is possible to be done, and to try to max out your score as an intellectual exercise. I played a few solo games and then was done with it, but it was brain-consuming while it lasted.

This came into my brain just about the same time as Agricola did. Agricola drowned it out for a week or two, and then my brain was going full-Race. What kinds of strategies would work? How do the cards work together? The luck factor makes it impossible to plan a game, though, so my brain would have exploded without actually owning it and getting to play it.

If I think anymore about Container I think I'll burst. I've never even played this game, because it's not 2 player and there's really only one opponent in my house right now. So, until I get a chance to playtest my 2 player variant, it's on the shelf. But it's not out of my head!

I spent a while trying to calculate the average value of a container on the island.

I spent a while trying to figure out my two-player variant and whether it would work at all.

It's extremely hard to balance something without playtesting it, and I don't own the game so I can't.

Regardless, these are the games I've been thinking about.. what game has you wrapped in it's snare?

Just wanted to give an honorable mention (and make it a 10 item GL!) to the guy who introduced me to Age of Steam, Parthenon, Agricola, and Race for the Galaxy. He was also the first knowledgable gamer to tell me that Diplomacy was NOT the greatest game ever.

"It has player elimination, so you end up with a group playing and a group not playing."

... never thought of that before! Doh!

Thanks for the introduction to some much better games.

It may surprise you, but as a boy, I had some month after discovering this game where I spent hours and hours contemplating starting moves for each nation and how to counter them if I would play one of the other nations...
I even had the board set up besides my bet, so that I could have a quick look if something came to my mind while trying to find finally some sleep.

I think this pre-gaming over-excessive analyzing pretty much broke the game for me, as I had absorbed almost all opening moves and none of my friends could beat me. I even won a few times as Axis player.

As Greece, how can I take Political Leadership away from Egypt? Or, at least, how can I get enough cities to make a viable tax-based strategy? I would say four cities is the minimum. Two temples can be added, in the capital and in one other city, so three of the four cities are doubled, for a total income of seven tax. With that, you can save two every other round, and if the Commerce Director doesn't foul it up, you can keep your seven and build a Hero / Wonder every other round.

Even getting four cities is pretty tough. There are only three leftover cities to build, so you're racing to build two before Egypt does. You need a trireme to even get to that many potential sites.

One time I played a game of this that we left set up at work and played at lunch. Ok we played at all hours of the day, but not continuously. I thought a lot before strategy phases and especially when I went home. I came up with a lot of elaborate negotiations so I could get the strategy card I needed, but also convince someone else to take the strategy card I didn't want a different opponent to have.

The game always sets up the same way, and Caesar always goes first, so I've done some thinking about my Caesar opening.

Originally I hit Sicily, and parked in Aegyptus.

Then I decided I wanted to end in a military province, but I also wanted to protect Aegyptus against Crassus. I still wanted to hit Sicily. So I hit Sicily, then picked up more legions in Aegyptus, and hit Cyrenaica.

The current plan is to hit Sicily, then travel without legions to Aegyptus to pick up my gold, and return to Sicily.

Many late night multi-player sessions of Advanced Civ. distracted our gaming group from our studies. When we should've been studying during the day, we were busy thinking of ways to thwart Player A's "Monotheism is the key" strategy, or payback for Player B for trading Piracy to me a critical point in a previous game.

I've calmed down on this a bit since when I first had it... but for a while, all I could do was try to figure out how to maximize my early actions. I think a lot of this was due to the nature of the game. The sand timers put so much pressure on you during the game, there simply isn't the downtime to concoct a strategy mid-game. So after the first few games, I would take all my downtime at work (and some of my work time, since... well... it's only work) and work out just how much I would want from the level 2 techdeck before I upped myself to level 3.... and then how many cubes are best before heading out on my first voyage.... and.... and.... and.....

Dune is the game that I think about way too much (if that is really possible). I think about games past, who to invite, when I can get my next 'fix', and (most of all these days) my new Dune project.
I just can't get enough of this glorious game.

Of course Diplomacy isn't the greatest game - because Dune IS!
