Since Doug & Beth were unable to host Thursday night gaming this week, I offered to host. This week we had a smaller group of Tim, Craig, Larry, Dan, Carl, Steve and myself. Fortunately almost everyone had brought games, so we had a large collection to chose from. Here's a quick recap, I did miss most of the game play with the games I didn't participate in, so please feel free to add information. We did faithly keep track of scores using one of Doug's sheets I grabbed last week ;-).

Tim, Larry, Craig and I were starting to set up Mexica when Dan arrived, so we broke into 2 groups. Larry, Craig and I played Mexica; I had never played it and I believe Larry had played at least once. About half way through the game, I started to get the strategy of placing canals and creating districts the proper size for the chips. However, I did make an error of dumping all my buildings in a high point district, when I already had the majority. Since I was out of buildings, with Larry and Craig still having some to place and get more points, I decided to end the game quickly by using the last 3 point district chip. This didn't please Larry too much but he still came in second place. Craig won with a score of 121, Larry came in second with 85 and I ended up with 76 points.

While Larry, Craig and I were playing Mexica. Tim and Dan broke out a game of Race for the Galaxy; which was played last week. All I know about it was the score; Dan 29 and Tim 26. After they finished that game, Dan and Tim play tested Dan's card game Amoeba; in which the score was Dan 64 and Tim 46.

Larry, Craig and I were only about half way through the game of Mexica, when Tim and Dan finished the play test of Dan's Amoeba card game and Carl arrived; so those three started a game of Vikings. I played this game last week at the Saxon's and really liked it, I thought the bidding aspect and the wheel were really fun. The outcome of the Vikings game was Tim 94, Dan 72 and Carl 70.

Steve arrived not long before both groups began wrapping up the Vikings and Mexica games simultaneously. We decided to break out a 3 player and a 4 player game and considered a few options. Steve offered to teach me Candamir. I've had this game for over a year; I have never played it but mentioned it in a post recently, so I jumped at the opportunity to learn to play it. Steve taught Carl and I how to play Candamir while Larry, Tim, Dan and Craig broke out a game of Cuba. I think we both caught on pretty quickly to Candamir, but while I played it safe by avoiding most battles, gathering items and competed with Steve over a couple of victory point categories, Carl quickly surpassed the 3 adventure card quota to earn a VP in that category as well as lots of experience points and collect other items from numerous adventure battles. Just to make things a little challenging, Steve suggested making a die roll of a one as an automatic failure, since it was pretty easy to max out experience in the latter part of the game. I lost count how many times both Steve and Carl needed anything except a one to win a battle and yet they invariably rolled exactly a one on a six-sided die nearly everytime; it became quite comical. The game was fairly close for all but Steve was the first to place his 10th VP and win the game.

While Steve was teaching Carl and I how to play Candamir, Tim, Larry, Dan and Craig started a game of Cuba. I don't know much about what took place but the score ended up with Craig with 74 points, Tim with 73, Larry with 66 and Dan with 63 points, so I assume it was a close game. From what I could see across the table, it looks to be a beautiful game and when I noticed and heard there were aspects of it similar to Puerto Rico, I knew I wanted to play it soon in the near future.

Since we were learning Candamir, it took a little longer than an average game. When the game of Cuba was finished, Tim headed out and Craig, Larry and Dan broke out a couple of card games while they waited for Candamir to finish. The first game was Fluxx, Dan won the game but announced he was all 'Fluxx-ed out', when a second game of a different version of Fluxx was suggested, so they played a game of Coloretto.

Coloretto is one of my favorite "filler" card games and I need to pick up a copy soon. Craig won with 40 points followed by Dan with 35 and Larry with 29 points. Coloretto and Candamir finished about the same time and Carl headed out. Those remaining; Dan, Craig, Larry, Steve and myself decided to play test a five player version of Dan's Amoeba card game. Steve and Craig ended up with some really long runs of the same type of card and ultimately Steve won with 98 points, Craig came in second with 84 points, Larry and Dan tied for third with 60 points and I finished with 42 points. Everyone contributed a little feedback to Dan on his cool card game. We wrapped the night up at that point, around midnight. Thanks to all who attended the gaming and for bringing their games, it was a lot of fun. Doug said he will send a confirmation email when he's back from his trip, but Thursday gaming should be back at the Saxon's next week. See you then!
