BROGFest is a small gaming convention held yearly in Charleston, SC, organized by Richard Berg, designer of many of my favorite games. Here is a geeklist where you can see examples of his designs:

And information about the convention:

It is my first time going to BROGFest and I am looking forward to the experience. I am bringing some games along to play face-to-face. What follows is my dynamic list. I know I can't bring everything, but this is what I would bring if I could.

I am a huge fan of multi-player war games. 2006 of course was a banner year for those like me as we received Here I Stand, Pax Romana, and Onward Christian Soldiers. A good multi-player war game is a great find and nobody would expect a year like 2006 to repeat anytime soon, but we all hold hopes that at least one great multi-player game pops up every year. In 2008, my hopes are all on Clash of Monarchs, a unique CDG designed by Bob Kalinowski and developed by Chris Janiec. It is different from all other CDGs because it is tailored to stress the importance of supply, Lt units that can raid regions into devastation, and leadership.

I'm really getting excited about this one. On the surface it is the Paths of Glory system transported to the Spanish Civil War. It fits well because the force sizes and intensity of the war in Cruzada y Revolucion are mapped to the escalation of the conflict. Similarly to Paths of Glory's levels of war commitment, the Spanish Civil War's levels (War of the Columns, Great Units, and Decisive Phase) are reflected in how the cards increase in power. In this game the Republicans are always on the defensive and fighting their waning morale as much as the Nationalists. For them, it is a game of survival and for the Nationalists, it is a game of capitalizing on opportunities with a few superior forces. I'm looking forward to seeing it on the table!

I haven't played this one in a while, but last Spring and early Summer, I had so much fun playing it with the developer, Neil Randall. This is a CDG with a very original approach - in that, the cards can be used not only for OPs and events, but also for siege attacks & defenses (along with sometimes diplomatic initiatives with neutrals). This creates a lot of tension about how to use not just a single card, but how to "shape" the hand to achieve your goals. Add to this a very interesting combat system that depicts the different characteristics of the armies and you have a very compelling game.

I am taking Pax Romana along with all my notes so Neil and I can do some 2nd Edition stuff. I would also love to play one of my new scenarios.

Of all of Richard Berg's "system" games, my favorite is the Ancient World series. I am bringing this one along to have some fun among Berg's aficionados.

I am bringing along this CDG by John Firer that is being developed by Neil Randall so I can feel how it plays face-to-face. I've played a little in Vassal already so I know most of the rules, but one game of ftf play makes your game a lot "crisper" and also gives players a better feel for the game. And how is the game? It's a very interesting period with a lot of turmoil for Rome. Of course the Sertorian revolt, Spartacus, and Mithridates present huge challenges and Rome has to hope to have one controlled before the others explode. The Sertorians win by driving Rome into chaos or otherwise by controlling parts of the Empire, freeing the slaves, and reducing the will of the Romans. The Romans win by not letting this happen. They are armed with overwhelming military strength, but hampered by poor leadership (or at least inconsistent leadership).
