Upon reading some of the discussion on this great geeklist I found myself thinking of those moments when my favorite TV shows made that horrendous mistake. They are so desperate for ratings that they try something drastic and downright silly to try and bring back their viewers.

So please share those Shark Jumping moments that you remember.

The Cosby Show

It was bad enough when they brought in little Olivia in order to have that young child in the mix (now that Rudy was older.) But having her live with the Huxtables despite the fact that her father was off serving in the Navy and her step-mother went back to school.

And don't even get me started on Cousin Pam angry

The Mole

The most interesting and entertaining reality show of all time, and what do they do to start off season 3? They replace Anderson Cooper with Ahmad Rashad, and they do Celebrity Mole (or, more appropriately, D-List Celebrity Mole.)

What producers/writers don't seem to understand is that the couple who have loved each other from a distance are only, truly, interesting as long as it's from a distance. The moment they say "I Do" the show is over for most viewers. Joe and Helen getting married turned this into a really dull show.

I realize this show is still on the air and has been carrying along some viewers because of it's soap opera style, but to me it was over the moment Doctor Doug Ross left. I'm sorry but, when you have an actor of George Clooney's caliber, the quality of the show falls apart without him. Their pathetic attempts to revive the franchise by bringing in one B-List actor after another did nothing for me.

Yet another of the long line of shows that should have ended when the relationship began. As soon as Tony and Angela were a couple, the show had nothing to keep us watching.

The episode where David and Maddie finally "do it" - trashing the room in the process - is a classic. However, everybody knew that it meant the show was done.

Even down to the final episode, where various cast members get very funny death scenes, including final words along the lines of, "We wouldn't have been cancelled if you two hadn't hooked up . . ."

There is an enormous military base hidden under Buffy's college. From this base issue forth government soldiers armed with lightning guns. Why? I think they wanted to capture monsters for some reason, maybe to build a super monster somehow? Oh, and the leader of the army base worked during the day as a professor at Buffy's college, and her right hand man was the class TA. I'm actually laughing as I write this. When did any of these people get a chance to sleep? This was the end of Buffy for me.

Mad About You

It was originally a cute little show about a couple that didn't have kids, free from all the conventional "young couple with a baby" jokes. That was why we liked it.

Then television demographics kicked in. Yeah, they had to have a baby. Then it became yet another wacky "young couple with a baby" sitcom.

The show started to lose something when Sam and Diane started a relationship. But when Diane left this show was reborn. Sam was back to his womanizing self, and all was right with the world. It was even tolerable having the whiny Rebecca join the fold. But when Sam and Rebecca started a relationship, the show was done for.

For me, the point in which I started to lose hope was the boxing episode. "We're on the run to save what's left of out civilization, let's stop and have a boxing tournament for a while!" I also remember this as the start of the transition to BSG as a massive soap opera.

I want this show to end well -- I really do.

P.S. "Boxing episode" has replaced "jumping the shark" at our house. As in, "You know what this show needs? A boxing tournament."

Not that I ever really liked Family Ties, but remember when they started making every third episode into a clip show?

The advent of the clip show has got to be a mark that a show has started their boxing episodes...er, "jumped the shark."

(As an aside, remember the old SNL sketch where they did a parody of Family Ties and they did a clip show of their clip shows? I think I remember Dana Carvey doing a really funny Alex Keaton impression.)

The West Wing

The only "appointment TV" I've had in the past decade or more was this grand show about good ol' liberal Democratic politics. It had its ups and downs and even had that clever twist of a Democratic Prez and Republican VP. The problem was when they had Bartlett hand over the reins to the VP (John Goodman) at the end of the season where his daughter got kidnapped.

Then, voila, in the next season opener, it's all OK, Goodman accepts that he's out and they can get a new, Democratic, VP. What's up with that.

It had a few fun moments from then on, but was never the same.

Yes, I was one of the few who actually enjoyed watching this show on a regular basis. However, this show was guilty of several shark jumping moments. Judy Winslow mysteriously disappeared after only 3 episodes. They recast Harriet Winslow with another actress. But the show fell apart the first moment that Steve Urkel stepped into that machine and came out as "Stefan Urquel."

Rosanne -
This show was a nice change of pace from the rather well-off family based sitcoms that were the norm at the time of its airings. A family with problems more relevance to my small southern-Oregon mill-town upbringing. The show seemed to have several "Jump the shark" moments however. The biggest was the family winning the lottery, although this was already after the show had become very tired, and was "resolved" by a "it was all a fantasy/dream" like ending (which made it even worse!).

The other moments were Darlene moving out, Becky's actress being replaced, David moving in, etc...

After Season 2, it was all downhill for what could have been one of the finest shows ever on television ... When Season 3 proved to be pointlessly Meadow-centric (it was just Felicity with occasional rub-outs), it became clear to me that David Chase actually had not planned the story-arc out at all and that the brilliant first 2 seasons were pure accident. The remaining seasons bore this out as plot-points were repeated, new characters came and went, old characters were ignored, and all of the long-standing portents and alleged foreshadowing came to nothing before the show thankfully blinked off the air with its nowheresville final scene.

Goodbye and good riddance!

Much as I love Brian Cox, when he stepped into the picture with the exciting plan to buy Mrs. Stubbs out to build a theater, it threw the fundamental incoherence of everything in the Tolliver/Stubbs plotline into sharp relief. That this coincided with Major Dad starting to throw his weight around didn't help.

I believe the shark was jumped somewhere around the time that Nadine hit her head and thought she was a cheerleader back in high school again. Not to mention the acquisition of her superhuman strength. Now, quite possibly the actual moment could have been when a comatose Leo suddenly came out of it.

This show jumped the shark hard when they killed Maude. The Simpsons is all about making fun of stereotypes, and the Flanders as the perfect Christian family that Homer hates/envys was a great one, and then it turned into Ned as a sad/pathetic single father. Apu getting married and (especially) having octuplets and Barney sobering up were warning signs in retrospect. All they need to do is go back and watch the Armind Tanzarian episode ("and we will never speak of this again upon penalty of torture") to see how they should deal with "permanent" changes to the story line.

Before then I was a religious Simpsons watcher. I stopped watching soon after that and every time I watch an episode because people tell me its gotten better, it's still awful.

Family Guy is not as good as the best Simpsons, but its a damn site more watchable than the drivel they are putting out now.

The movie was solid though.
