Everyone has had them, you know, those moments when you wonder what you were doing asking 'that guy' to play or why you didn't just go home instead of playing 'one more game' (that lasted 4 hours). They may have been painful experiences at the time, but they all make great stories for us to laugh at now.

I have many fond memories of settlers, this one though leaves me shaking my head every time. Back about 4 years ago when I had even less of a life... I used to go to a local game shop every Friday to play games with a small group of guys. One guy would always play slower, but he didn't usually play and his AP didn't seem THAT bad. At least until we played this game one night. He drew fourth player, and when it came to his turn to place his first settlements he began to think.

He thought about where the best numbers would be, and how he would get access to all of the resources. He thought about where the other players would place after him. Then he thought about the color blue, and why the sky AND the ocean shared this color. He considered the essence of man and began work on a short novel. At least, that's what I figure he thought about because it took him over 30 minutes to finally place his opening settlements.

That was the last time I played a game with him. The game ended up lasting about 2 and a half hours if I remember, and the whole time I just wanted to escape.

More recently, I was asked to play this game. I'm not overly fond of risk, but the newer variations make it OK so I agreed to play a game of this. We went through the rules and got started rather quickly. The game was proceeding and towards the last couple of turns and I thought it might be fun to play the sink Atlantis card.

The player who owned Atlantis disagreed with me and decided that he would quit and then go play heroclix. We all figured whatever. If he wants to be that way, it didn't bother us (at least he needs to see that we don't care). So we keep playing and then he decides he will barge back into the game, and he demands a turn. Then he just takes everything he has and proceeds to ensure I never play a game with him again.

Very uncomfortable as he was fuming mad the whole time. It's amazing what you run into sometimes.

Back before even settlers, my choices were this, risk, or something from the shelves of walmart. So, as this was the best option (and at the time my favorite game), I would naturally select this at any opportunity.

So me and a friend began playing (while watching all 3 Star Wars movies) around noon. I don't remember who was axis and who was allies but at one point my opponent got frustrated enough to flip the board with all of its pieces into the air.

I never recovered all of the plastic armies. I have never seen a board flipped since then, but I'll never forget the shock of having it happen.

One day back when I was about 15 or so, my dad and sister and I were playing risk. After an hour or so I remember my dad having to leave to go get something from a hardware store for some reason.

While waiting for him to return, my sister and I (along with my mom I think) went into the living room to watch TV. After a while we started hearing these little noises coming from the dining room. Not much mind was paid to them however and it was ignored until my dad returned home.

When he did, we went back to playing the game. At least, that was the intention. See, there was this giant monster in the shape of a kitten that had been having fun killing off the worlds soldiers. After viewing the carnage, it was determined that the world had lost and nobody would in fact conquer the world that day. Amazingly, all but one red guy was found among the bodies, and he was forever MIA due to cat.

By the time I was 14, my parents had divorced. My mother spent most of her time chasing after a new husband. My 2 oldest brothers, Graham and Amery lived at my grandparents house, leaving me with my 3rd oldest brother, Harvey, and my younger sister.

Harvey used too bully me a lot. I bullied my sister.

One evening Amery came round with a friend, Richard to play Speed Circuit.

By the time of the 3rd and final race at Monza, Harvey had the most points, followed by Richard, then me and Amery.

At the end of the 1st lap Harvey was winning and Richard was trailing far behind. So Amery and I colluded to charge into the next corner at 180mph. This meant that we spun out just in front of Harvey, blocking his progress. We decided that Harvey couldn't put his car into reverse to get around us - as the rules didn't specifically say that he could do that.

Harvey said "Move! Or I'll thump you."

This made Amery and I even more determined to sit there at 0mph till Richard trundled past us to a comfortable victory for the race and the Championship altogether.

Just as Amery and Richard were leaving, Harvey came into my bedroom and thumped me as hard as he could in the ribs. I jumped up and down screaming. Amery and Richard laughed loudly and left.

I felt abandoned.

Me and this guy would alternate between the Russian Campaign (not my favorite but he always wanted to play it) and Victory in the Pacific. Since we actually finished VITP games, they got pretty tense. At the start of 1 game, I had a very very bad 1st turn (partly luck, mostly my fault) as the Americans. I got so mad I jumped in my car and went home. He later called to ask my wife if I was OK. I wasn't, I felt like crap the rest of the night! cry

A couple of years ago I had a Friday night free and saw that there was a gaming group that met that night so decided to check it out. When I got there they pulled out this dirty, moldy copy of cheapest produced game ever called Outpost. Ok maybe Outpost was revolutionary in its time and I know there have been other games to copy this game. But we played with 8 freak'n players. And these we're quick players these we're the slowest players in the galaxy. I wake up in the middle of the night in cold sweat thinking about this game. We'll at one point we we're having our 50th auction and I one the players left the game to take a crap. 20 minutes later this guy comes back and we say the auction for the stupid factory is now at $32. And he thinks for about 10 minutes and looks at his cards and says "Pass". I'm like you mean I waited for 30 mintues for this guy to say "Pass". But then I realized that the average auction was taking 45 mintues so this guy really didn't slow down the game. This was the one game I almost walked away midway through the game. The game ended up taking about 7 or 8 hours to play. I've never gone back to that location and I'll never played outpost.

Many years ago I played “War of the Ring”, with me as the fellowship player. After many many hours of play my opponent had stacked so many counters on the entrance to Mordor that there was no way to get through without a similar super stack but that struck me as not very strategic so I decided to try and draw some of them away. Moving a tasty morsel of Rohan counters near to the gate I waited for them to pursue then ran for the nearest forest. Once in amongst the trees I waited, once more, for his units to arrive then we entered combat. Looking at the terrain chart I said “right, so mine are in the trees and yours are on the road so that means I get more hits”. Sadly my opponent did not see it this way and began to argue that although his orcs had arrived by road they would run into the trees and, anyway, Rohan were on horses so how could they go into a forest? This argument ran on for about half an hour, getting more and more heated. My opponent then said that he would accept the losses, so long as I did, and he reached across the map to get the dice but in so doing swept my counters all over the map. Not much point in carrying on after that.

We were playing a big game of werewolf for a party we were having at my store. I was the first villager offed by the werewolves and when watching the next round I saw that my fiancee, Ayumi, was one of the Werewolves. Now, she had never played before and wasn't really sure of what she was supposed to do, when the other werewolf pointed out someone looking at her she just kind of nodded her head not knowing why. Well after that round, the villagers managed to out her as being one of the werewolves. Then I, in all my brilliance, mentioned to the group that she didn't seem to understand the game when Jed (the other werewolf) was looking to her for agreement on who to kill next. It even took me a few moments to figure out why Jed was looking askance at me. WHOOPS! The game was still going!

We still give my younger brother hell about the time, at NINETEEN years old, insisted on playing Monopoly with me and my fiancee, insisted on adding $500 to free parking, even though I pointed out that this was game-prolonging in a bad way (by eliminating money sinks), and then got very upset when I landed on Free Parking and picked up $500 for the fourth time, while he was very broke.

He grabbed the corner of the board, flipped it up in the air, yelled some expletives and stormed out. My fiancee and I just looked at each other in shock, and cleaned up the mess that he made.

But I submit to you that more board-flipping incidents relate to Monopoly, than any other game.

This board-flipping incident is a little different in character from the others described so far. At the age of 21 I was heavily involved in a bunch of SF/fantasy/D&D fans at the time but was one of the few in the group into wargames as well. One of the other guys decided he wanted to learn about wargames in the middle of a party - odd timing, but any time's a good time to recruit to the hobby.

This was the only introductory-level wargame the party host had, so I duly set it up on the floor of a spare room and start explaining the rules, only mildly distracted by a friend's younger (maybe 17) sister who decided to watch us. Well, not so much us as, it turned out, me. She had the hots for me but couldn't stand that I was paying no attention to her. So she calmly reached down and sent all l'Empereur's horses and all the Duke's men flying, I guess thinking having my anger was better than not having my attention at all. That was the end of that game and indeed that recruiting attempt.

Why is this a worst gaming moment? Because I ended up marrying her, which turned out to be a very very bad mistake. Given the mode of introduction I should have known better!

When I was fifteen, still in high school, with no driver's liscense, I agreed to play in a game of Titan with a group of friends. We played on a Saturday, at the apartment of an older guy who lived in a nearby town. Late in the morning, I carpooled over to our destination with a couple of other guys who lived close to me.

In the first half-hour of the game, I was eliminated from play. My poor Titan stack was in the wrong place at the wrong time. With no way to drive home, I was stuck in this little apartment watching everyone else play for the next fifteen hours. There wasn't even an Atari to distract me.
