My wife made the suggestion we should try to play every game in the collection this year. A great idea, focusing on what we already own, rather than what's new on the shelves at the local game store.

It also gives me a chance to reassess oldies, and work out if we still need to own them.

So, the goal this year - play everything on the shelves - several hundred games, many neglected for years. Then, assess whether they still warrant a spot on the overstuffed shelves. If it doesn't pass muster, it's the heave-ho.

Played several games of this two player late in 2007. The juiced up version of San Juan. Good fun, but takes a little to penetrate the iconography used - some cards that flash by my hand are still too busy for me to decode on the fly (the Gambling World one, for instance). Played my first four player game in February and didn't mind it. Edged into a won by 1 point by building lucrative yellow worlds late.

Stay or go: stay, but it's no guarantee. The more filler-esque San Juan is just simpler to break out and play.

Really nothing to assess about this game for me. My wife and I crunched out 40 games on the trot when it appeared mid-late 2007, often spending weeks at a time set up on the table. Fabulous growth/engine game. Played a four player "introduction" game for a newbie, and finished in 75 minutes. The winner had 74 points, via Homer / St Peters / Printing Press / Drama ... and that Age I government that has 1 culture and 2 happy faces (Theocracy?).
Stay or go: snort! As if you'd have to ask

Played a three player game at the beginning of the month. Fascinating rondel-based game where players are war-mongering profiteers backing powers in and around world war one. Dunno - love the design and elegance, but feeling more and more let down by the game play. Will play it if suggested, but have bitten the bullet and do not need to own it. Hamburgum and Antike more than scratch my rondel itch.

Stay or go: go (in fact, gone!)

Been on the shelves, unplayed, for a while now. Why? No idea, but it's a fun die rolling romp. Turns a quick, there is a lot of humour in the game (building bravado by running ahead of the bull in Pamplona), and losing seldom seems to matter. Great cross-over game, too.

Stay or go: stay, and it will be played more often.

A fairly recent acquistion, arriving late 2007. I've played it around five times since then and really enjoyed it each time. For the last game, I introduced it to four mates who aren't hard core gamers, and they all seemed to love it. Lots of high-fiving, back slapping, and phoney American accents. Flying Frog have hit a sweet spot here, a well designed and produced horror boardgame.

Stay or go: stay, and bring on the expansions.

An interloper... a new game. I tried hard to resist, but I couldn't resist the buzz, mainly from Pat Brennan. After four reads of the rules, and half a sample solo game, we played a full four player game. The verdict - two in love, one okay, and one dislike (but could be persuaded). I was the "okay". A lot to take in before you're up and playing, but game play is fast and straightfoward once you have your strategy nailed. Needs much more exploration, and I hope it receives the gaming time required to fully evaluate it.

Stay or go: stay, but this one could fall either way. After game two, it's staying for the moment.

Played four or five games of this, but not for a few months. A very stop/start game as the rules were constantly rechecked. The card selection mechanic caused a lot of confusion that the rules didn't seem to address - face up and face down cards weren't explained properly, so exactly what could a player claim? Can you bid on a card if you had a face up card in front of you? A game this simple shouldn't be that difficult to get into. Additionally, it's way too long for the gaming payback.

Stay or go
: gone!

I'm a bit of a die rolling game nut, and this is a good one. Element of tactics, growth, and the decisions about when to lunge for the King. My nine 3's lost to ten 6's in a tight two player game.

Stay or go: easy... it stays.

Quality Reiner Knizia game from 10 years ago, back when he seemed to crank out a gem from a deck of cards every other week. Hadn't played this in ages, and forgotten just how clever it is. All the Reiner boxes are checked - simple, quick, frustrating, think-y, and of course, full of theme

Stay or go: Stay.

Classy Doris and Frank game from the mid-1990's. I have upgraded my set to the ultra-cute clay model amoebae, and boy are they cute. Still takes a bit too long to play to completion, but fun for a once a year game. I really can't think of another game that covers the same ground, and is better.

Stay or go: Stay.

Played a few "real time" games over the years, and not a lot of them work. This one seems to, even if it's not the greatest game around. Plays in exactly 30 minutes real time, the umpiring (always the bane of real time games) is quite low, and has a nice sense of empire "growth". Looks good to.

Stay or go: stay.

Cute Knizia real time game where cards are flipped and you have to knock the table to claim the set. Three knocks and you're watching for the rest of the round. It's a bit like real time Ra. Brilliant little closer.

Played with the Schikane variant from Spielbox magazine. This has always been a slightly ho-hum game for me - seems to play itself. However, the Schikane variant does add a nice, nasty touch, and I can't imagine playing without it from now on. Pretty easy decision to keep this - nice small box, good filler for gamers and great cross-over game for non-gamers.

Stay or go: Stay.

Great game - three player, hybrid wargame. Players take on Crassus, Pompeii or Caesar and try to jink around the other two to snatch a victory. Three different ways to win... I tend to like the political avenue as it's not as overt. Brilliant design, bordering top 10 for me.

This one actually went almost immediately after I picked it up, so I'm cheating by adding it to this list. However, I got to play it again in February and it was interesting to see if I was justified in letting it go. For one of the most anticipated and hyped games of 2006, it was just a game to me. It's neat, it works - that's the good part. What doesn't work is the appalling colour mismatch between the board, cards and advance track. Also, my board ripped into three pieces when I first opened my copy of the game. This is the first game that made me suspicious of "Made in China".

Stay or go: long gone, and no regrets here.

Two player specific Mystery Rummy game. I enjoy the games, but always have to read the rules again when breaking one out after a few months. We staggered through the opening hand, trying to remember what Transformation and Potion did, and what exactly was a shutout? By hand three we were humming, and the better half won a substantial victory. Nice, solid addition to the Mystery Rummy series.

Stay or go: Stay.

My project to play all the Command & Colors: Ancients battles this year (see http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/272693 for the beginning of the chain) has progressed into Expansion Pack #1. Played a couple of battles from here and enjoyed them a lot (starting at Marathon, here http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/296432). These games are certainly the most complex of the Command & Colors games, but also the most rewarding. There is a great dollop of historical information to read with each battle ... I just lap that stuff up.

Stay or go: Stay.
