There are some card games which requires you to fold some cards in two (or even - AAARGH! - to cut them) in order to use them as a pawns or a markers.

I've NEVER done this and always used a card stand for the purpose.

Nonetheless, I'd like to list them here.

Not only does Dungeoneer expect you to fold a card, but you actually have to cut the card into pieces before folding it! In this picture, you can see the instrument of evil sitting on the left side of the table, acting all innocent, like it has a perfect right to be let loose on game components.

In the "unglued" expansion there were cards that you actually have to tear to piece if you want to use them.
Of course, this expansion was never to be taken seriously.

You have to cut the corner cards in this game. I know several people who have never cut their cards. Makes for a less attractive "board", but satisfies the need not to "damage" a perfectly good card!

It's one of the few games I've played where an MIB is in equal competition with a cow.

Surely* this, and all the games like it, are the ultimate example of this? Not only do you have to break up the cards - the cards are virtually the entire game! Never again can you look upon a pristine, unmarked game.

And yet, it's no trouble at all. All you need is the right mindset. Wargamers probably deal with this better - punching out hundreds of counters gets you in the mood to manipulate game components cruelly.

* don't call me surely.**

** doesn't really work in print, does it..?

No stand-ins in this one! All the cards have to be folded to be used as building pieces.

After my son played this the first time at age 3 we had to keep him from trying to fold any cards he could get his little hands one.

The amusing score tracker in this game requires you to fold and glue the cover for the column tracks. We concluded that this feature had only been included because it was cheaper to have a full sheet of "counters" than to include the 17 or so other pieces as separate components...

You gotta fold the character cards in half and put them in the stands. This is a way to hide the identity of your characters - in a slightly Stratego-ish way.
