When people play games in a small and closed gaming group with no support of any advanced gamer, misconceptions and misinterpretations are frequent and can became unnoticed during years. These are some of mine, please, feel free to add your own experiences.

A friend of mine teach me the rules when I was 12. We played doing a single attack for turn and reinforced only by card play, so our risk games where played with a low number of pieces on the board and it tooks several turns to take a single territory.
I begin to teach the rules to other people as I knew them and ten years and docens of games played after I discovered that the actual rules where really distinct.

I know the real system is more dynamic and fluctuant, but I think our system had more strategic insight because its slower path makes more important the strategy and long term planning.

We start playing “serious” wargames when I was 17. I read the rules, explain it to my friends and start playing. But I don’t undestood well the multi-unit atack concept and we allow to atack an entire file of german units to an entire file of russian units, making great blow ups of 6 or more russian units when attacking them as a whole with stukas.

Two years latter we thought about ourselves that we’re real grognards. So we bought “Fortress Europe”, read the rules and start playing. This time we’re truly convinced that we're playing on the correct way...until a friend of main that was looking but not playind our game asked “What’s that green line”. “¿what green line?”. "This one". “Ups...Er...”. It was the TAC radius line and we were playing ignoring it. blush

After three plays with my friends I played a game with a person out of our game group. I try to correct him when I think he was doing an illegal move, but he corrected me instead: No, you don’t have a limit of one to add influence markers on a country.
Good game if you play adding as much influence markers as you want, but I think it was more interesting when we play adding them one by one, because the succesful control of a country was a hard-worked process rather than a one card ops strike on a country. Influence attempts where far more important in our way.

We’re 39 years old and we have a long experience in gaming, so no error could be made with the rules of such a simple game, so...¿In what moment the reader of the rules forgot that five cards must be placed face up to chose one of them and instead we started playing taking cards only from the face down maze?

I'm not sure if this fits or not, but our group screwed up on a few of the taxation rules the first game, so taxation never made any money. The game turned into a sad excuse for a wargame, which seemed to represent the WWI stalemate, because I controled Austria-Hungary, Italy, and France in some sort of convoluted axis, and every nations coffers were dry.

Until I played this on SuperDuperGames we had missed the rule that you could move a cap to empty spaces. This certainly had an effect on how far you could move the caps around.

The game is better with the correct rules, but was still enjoyable with our modification.

When playing this with my lunch group, we somehow missing the sacrifice rule and that you could not create a ship in a system, unless you already had a ship of that color there. Blue was not nearly as useful prior to playing with the correct rules. The sacrifice rules make all the difference, taking the game from ho-hum to WOW!, especially in two player.

Once again, I got a reminder of the correct rules by playing games on SuperDuperGames. (The sacrifice was caught when I read some of the strategy articles on SDG's wiki.)

In this game, you can't harvest a bean field with only a single bean in it if you have a bean field with multiple beans.

We started out (my fault) by thinking you could harvest any field at any time. So, ditching the field with only one bean since that was obviously the better choice than the other field(s) that you worked hard to cultivate. You could even deal with several beans you didn't want by planting one, ripping it up, planting another, ripping it up, etc.

Then, I was reading the rules to one of the expansions where it referenced the original rule. Duh! Anyway, the real rules force a lot of trading / donating esp. if you flip over two cards you can't use. Its a better game than the one we were playing.

We were playing the 2:1 ports backwards for about a year. We had understood that you could pay any 2-of-a-kind to obtain 1 of the resource marked on the port. One of us re-read the rules at one point and figured out the we were doing it all wrong.

The game strategy was obviously different but it was still quite playable.

You wouldn't think it was possible to mess up the rules in this one, but you would be wrong. This was all my fault.

I brought this along this past holiday season to play with the relatives for the first time. I had missed the all important rule that you need to remove 9 cards from the deck! Of course, the game is completely broken when you do that.

Luckily, we figured that one out relatively quickly though it still took 2 or 3 plays for it to sink in - some really silly strategies could guarantee you a win otherwise and I was pretty sure this game wouldn't be so well regarded on BGG with such a major flaw. I re-read the rules and discovered the error of my ways.

We ended up really enjoying this game in the end too.

We played this game for quite a while making a fundamental error in combat. Took my friend's kid brother to point it out - so that was an accidental house rule that went away.
