I own and enjoy all of the Lightning games that have a WWII theme. They appeal to me because of: (1) Theme, (2) quick playing time, (3) Each has different mechanics keeping the games fresh, (4) they are easy to teach , once you understand them (kind of a rules mess with FAQ's much longer than the rules), and (5) they are a ton of fun.

I stayed away from the War on Terror, and from the reviews that sounds like a good thing. That being said I think that this type of system would work well with other conflicts. This list will be separated into 3 parts: (1) Where have we been, (2) Where are we going and (3) Where should we go?

Where we have been(1).

Fun and fast. This card game some how does a good job of capturing the theme. Sure there is a dose of luck in this game, but there are plenty of opportunities for clever card play, bluff and pushing your luck.

The rules are terribly written, but there is a good FAQ at Consim.

If you like WWII games add this to your collection.

Where we have been (2).

I used to think it this was just a little bit better than L: Midway due to feeling like I have more control and that a come back is more probable; now I like them about the same, but they are very different games. Good job of making slight tweaks in mechanics to accomplish the right flavor in each of these games.

Where we have been (3) .

I do not own this one, something about the theme was too off putting for me. Still too close to the event I guess. From what I have read that was just as well as this game is getting panned.

Where we have been (4).

Nice addition to the Lightning series. The battle system seems a little odd at first, but is fine once you get used to it. THe battle resolution system is a little like the battle resolution of "We the People" with a dash of rock, paper, scissors . They definitely took a big step forward with the quality of this game (cards, pictures etc...).

Where we are going (1).

The next planned game is one based on the battle for Stalingrad. Based on their previous release schedule it should come out this year.

Update: I found out from the designer that Poland will be next, probably released in a few months.

Where should they go?

I think this fast and fun system has tons of potential and would work well with any conflict. Gettysburg, Waterloo, Yorktown......etc., would all be very interesting.

This just came out and it appears to have a lot of similarities to Midway (which I love). I think the way they handled the objectives and the objective modifiers will give this game it's own distinct flavor. Stalingrad and Market Garden are next in the batting order.
