A list of games from my collection that would probably strike a chord with a mixed group of gamers, casual gamers, and "newbies".

note: Guests of Samira's "Game night for playas" feel free to add items to this list if you have something you'd be interested in playing and can bring along.

Starting us off with a Cheap Ass game reminiscent of Apples to Apples mixed with a group-think stock trading mechanic. Fairly simple rules and generates lots of laughs with the right crowd.

Super simple card game ... fairly lucky, but a bit o' strategy can yield generally better outcomes. Best part of the game is fast play, with up to 10 players.

Distills the "press our luck" mechanic into a fast, fun, and sometimes frustrating game of hunting for buried treasure. Plays with up to 10!

Another fine "press our luck" game... this one from the distinguished designer Reiner Knizia. If you haven't heard of him, you're obviously not geeky enough.

Players each lead their band of mighty adventurers on a quest for dragon's treasure. In order to take treasure, they must defeat the mighty dragons ... often it takes cooperation from several players to do so. However, defeating the dragons is actually the easy part. Figuring out how to divide the treasure equitably (or not) is the hard part. Either come to a consensus within 1 minute, or lose it all!

An auction game from the master, Dr. Knizia. The art is bad, but the tension and game play is fantastic.

A fairly simple negotiation game from the good Dr. Knizia. Players negotiate for votes in order to gain favorable positions within the Roman senate. The goal is to gain the most power within the inner circle of the senate through cunning negotiation and clever positioning.

Simple bluffing and auction game where players buy and sell farm animals. Childish theme, but gameplay is surprisingly fun.

A new classic, in which players race to build train routes between cities, gaining points for track length as well as completing secret route objectives.

Players trade bean seeds, plant crops, and harvest those crops for points. Clever trading mechanic makes this game bigger than the silly theme.
