Gladiator games in the traditional roman sense of 2 (or more) men (or women...lions, and assorted other beasts) beating the living snot out of each other for the enjoyment of the masses. Does not have to be completely roman to qualify, but should be gladiatorial combat.
Not be confused with Games of individual man-to-man combat (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/4246)

The savage splendor and pageantry of ancient Rome lives again in this game of man-to-man gladiatorial combat. Each player assumes the role of one of a matched pair of gladiators pitted in a contest of arms to the death. Superbly trained and equipped for the sole purpose of entertaining the citizenry with their life and death struggles, each man must fight with all the skill he can muster for his very survival. There is no question of bravery in the arena. It is kill or be killed and each man must muster all the skills and cunning he can summon in this most desperate of battles for survival. There can be only one victor in the arena and no second chance for the loser. For missus can be granted the fallen only at the whim of the emperor. And all too often mercy takes the form of a quick end on an opponent's blade. Let the games begin!

A simulation of single combat between gladiators in ancient Rome, based on a system of drawing and playing from a pack of combat cards. Each gladiator (represented by miniatures or counters on a combat map) has a set of cards giving options suitable to his style of fighting. The players maintain a hand of combat cards from which to choose their actions. The game is played in alternate moves, and features a hidden "hole" card, chosen by each player at the end of each turn, and revealed at the start of the next turn. Six types of gladiators are represented.

A set of miniatures rules for gladiatorial combat to be played on a hexagonal mapsheet. For two or more players. There are three separate sets of rules included. Rudis 1 is basic hand-to-hand combat between small groups of gladiators. Rudis 2 is for larger and more spectacular combats. Finally, Rudis 3 is a set of chariot racing rules.

A small print run (200 copies) was done by the Bradford University Wargames Society. The first Tabletop Games edition followed around 1976, with a second edition (as revised by the designer) released in 1980.

Munera Sine Missione is a free set of miniatures rules which are designed to allow players to recreate gladiatorial combat in the arenas of Ancient Rome. The are designed to give a very quick, simple game, which can be played in ten or so minutes

The game uses a hex grid to regulate movement, and each gladiator has a number of action points to spend each turn. These points can be spent to move or attack other gladiators. Attacks are resolved by a simple roll-off between the attacker and defender, with the attacker getting bonuses for position. The defender gets a save roll to avoid wounds. Play continues until a gladiator loses all of their wounds.

Rules for a wide range of weapons are included, and all major historical gladiator types can be depicted with little problem.

Munera Sine Missione is available as a free download from http://www.btinternet.com/~alan.catherine/wargames/glad.htm

from the Designer: "These were the words that signaled the beginning of the violent spectacle known as the “games’. Held in arenas all over the Roman Empire, these bloody combats offered the gladiators fame, fortune, and the chance for freedom. But while these benefits were attained by a fortunate few nothing short of a quick death awaited most.

And now with Red Sand, Blue Sky, you can recreate the excitement of these combats that for thousands of participants was anything but a game.

Whether you seek fame as a solitary gladiator or operate a gladiator school with many fighters the choice is yours. With RSBS you can play either solo or with others and with any figures you may already have. RSBS provides big fun for a small price. Hmmm, big fun..small price? What a concept!"

Roman gladiatorial combat with miniatures that can be played solo or with lots of players.

Pit Fighter: Fantasy Arena is a multi mechanic game. It combines the maneuverability of a miniatures game, the money management of a European board game, and the meta-game of a CCG.

While we say CCG, that isn’t quite true. To control the action of your character in the Pit, you create a deck, exactly like you would a CCG, but the cards available for Pit Fighter: Fantasy Arena are not randomized and have no rarity. The starter box comes with 2 sets of Expansion pack #1. You can purchase extra expansion packs, currently 3 of them are available. Each Expansion has pre-set cards, so you know exactly what cards you get when you purchase the Expansion Pack. Each Expansion pack has 21 cards in it, and the cover tells you what cards the pack has. Close enough....

Christians and Lions is a game for one, two or three players, and in fact requires the participation of the Divine Being Himself. (Are you on His good side?) It somewhat facetiously recreates the dire plight of those first Christians, facing certain death in the arena. We suggest that for maximum enjoyment and playability the participants forget for the time being that feeding otherwise innocent Christians to a pack of ravening wild beasts is a vile and reprehensible act. At least that's the rumor going around. In any case, it's all in fun.

From the Fantasy Gamer (Feb/Mar, 1984 issue #4) Review of C&L, by Scott Haring:

"Let's face it. If you're seriously concerned that Nuclear War trivializes one of the most important issues of our time, and if you sometimes wonder if fantasy role-playing games are warping the youth of America, then Christians and Lions may not be the game for you."

Despite the warning on the cover (it says, "The Irreverent Strategy Game," right there in big print), you may not be prepared for what's inside. Therein lies C&L's first hurdle - can anyone take seriously a game in which dozens of perfectly blameless innocents are ripped to shreds by marauding beasts?"

~

"...All this is very important in figuring the best strategy.
What? Strategy? Yes, Virginia, this game is not only borderline tacky and a barrel of laughs, its also a fairly good strategy game."

A game of gladiatorial combat in ancient Rome. Played using counters or miniatures figures (54mm or 25mm) on a hex grid. For two or more players.

Gladiators was designed as a system for single figure miniatures combat. But it is more like a role-playing game's combat system than a traditional miniatures system. Combat takes place on a hex grid making Gladiators similar in nature to Steve Jackson's Melee system (the combat system which evolved into The Fantasy Trip which eventually evolved into GURPS). Of course, the rules are a bit more specialized than Melee in that they focus on the gladiator combat of ancient Rome.

Gladiators took two years of play-testing and conceptual development to create. A set of playable yet detailed and realistic rules for simulating gladiatorial combat. Players will be able to move their gladiators, feint, and dodge about as they prepare to lunge at their adversaries. They can slash or jab at their chosen targets, and must parry the return blows of their opponent. Shields can be used to bash opponents off guard. Accidents also have a place in this simulated universe. Men can trip or stumble, weapons or shields can be dropped, or nets cut to shreds. In short, an imaginative player can momentarily enter the arena and prepare himself for a contest which will be won or lost by the same elements that brought victory or defeat, fame and wealth or sudden death to a gladiator. Skills, cleverness, foresight, and luck all play their respective roles.

These rules open a new dimension of wargaming--the realistic and exciting simulation of one man versus one man in the arena. Give them a try. You'll find a game hard to beat for moments of challenge.

Contains 1 cardstock sheet of tables printed on both sides and 1 cardstock hex sheet printed on both sides (2 difference sized hexes, one size on each printed side).

I wish there was more information available for this game, it looks interesting.

From the back cover:

The bloodthirsty spectators of the gladiatorial arena would shout out "Habet, hoc habet!" whenever a gladiator fell in combat. Now you can recreate those violent contests with the latest miniature wargaming rules from Flagship Games. Habet, Hoc Habet! includes:

* Rules for recreating gladiator combat, where the actions of the individual determine all!
* A campaign system where you play the gladiators' owner, training them for their bloody task, and sending them to their fate on the sands of the arena!
* All the weapons used by the gladiators of ancient times!
* Chariot races!
* Hours of enjoyment for you and your gaming buddies!

Habet, Hoc Habet! faithfully recreates the life of the gladiator and the gladiator's owner, the Lanista, as the later strives to make his fortune while the former does his best to stay alive!

Habet, Hoc Habet! is a great game for two players or a whole club. You can play out an entire campaign in the course of an evening, and no more than a single figure per person is needed!

Make a claim for glory. Play Habet, Hoc Habet!

BONUS FEATURE: Fantasy Gladiator Rules!

Manufacturer's web page for Habet, Hoc Habet! is at http://flagshipgames.com/hhh!.htm

Habet, hoc habet! is a game of gladiatorial combat.

Each player controls a gladiator and has attack and defense cards. Each turn each player chooses simultaneously which attack and defense card to play. Cards are played face down and revealed when all cards have been chosen.

The effect of the attack depends on the defense the other player has chosen.

The wounds are represented by reducing hand size - this simulates the fact that the wounded gladiators have reduced possibilities.

All cards are in Latin. The game was developed by a teacher to use in his class.

The game appeared in Battlegames #3 as a free insert.

Per definition, the combatants are gladiators, fighting for the enjoyment of the masses.

Fearless is a quick skirmish game for 2-4 players, where each player sets up and modifies his team as long as a given number of points has been reached, or each one fields a given number of fighters (most common: 3 fighters).

No Roman theme at all, but a nice cyberpunk setting instead.

I have not played Morituri Te Salutant, but am considering purchasing it based on a lot of positive feedback over on TheMiniaturesPage.com.

Here's a cool review/session report and a free playtest version of the rules from Gladiator Games. Black Hat Miniatures is the new publisher and has released an updated version of the game.

Vlaada Chvátil's Arena: Morituri te salutant is very close to a fantasy gladiatorial game, where various characters duel each other.

Lions and Gladiators is a dice board game for 2 players. You are in the Roman Coliseum fighting for life. One player plays the gladiators and the other the Lions.

The rules are available for free from:
http://www.webalice.it/alecrespi/html/warpspawn.html

All you need in additon to the rules is an 8 x 8 spaces square board and two six-sided dice.

Gladiator School is an expansion for Gladius in which the players are masters of their own gladiator schools. Buy slaves, train them, and send them to the arena.

The players start with 50 gold and one gladiator. Slaves are up for auction and bid on by the players. The players then match up gladiators to fight using the Gladius card game rules. Each player involved in the fight receives a gold award, the amount varies based on whether the match was won or lost, and for each of their gladiators that fought animals.

The players pay a regular upkeep cost for every gladiator owned. Gold may also be spent to enhance the gladiatorial training.

Fame Points are awarded to players at the end of each turn based on factors such as owning the most gladiators, having the most gold, and winning matches. The player with the most Fame Points after twenty turns wins the game.

The rules are available for free at:

In Gladius Maximus, two or more players play the part of Patrons who purchase, train and equip a cadre (or "familia") of gladiators and pit them against each other's gladiators in the arena.

Gladiator matches are almost always to the death. Gladiators who survive must deal with nagging injuries from previous fights, but can learn new skills and earn better equipment. The first player to kill off all of his opponent's gladiators or have one of his own gladiators
survive 5 fights (thereby earning fame and freedom) wins the game.

The game models gladiatorial combat between two or more gladiators, including teams.

Combat is broken down into melee combat turns, with each turn consisting of 5 phases:

1. Movement
2. Initiative/Maneuver
3. Attack/Parry
4. Riposte/Counter Parry
5. Remise/Counter Parry

Does anyone know where to find the English rules to this game?

Edit: I found the rules:
