WHY do YOU play the game?

One of the realizations one makes in the process of growing up is that not everyone (maybe no one) sees the world the way you do. We can all see the same set of facts (I suppose you could argue with that point, but whatever), but we place different values and interpretations of those facts. This is true in gaming as well as real life stuff (religion, politics, etc.)

The value you place on different aspects of the gaming experience determines what sort of games you will enjoy playing. When we see someone put down our favorite game as broken or trumpet a horrible game as great, many of us (myself included) react with a "what the heck are they thinking?!" People simply are looking for different experiences when they game. The cliche "there is no accounting for taste" became a cliche because its also true.

So, the goal of this list is to have people add their reasons for playing. Its purely and intentionally subjective. What do you get our of playing the game? I'm going to start the list off with a few genre example games. Please feel free to add additional example games, but more importantly add WHY you played either that game or that type of game.

My thought is that if we get enough responses, we can see even further how diverse the experience of gaming is.

Edit: I wanted to thank everyone for contributing to this list. I found it very insightful. For example, I would not have known that some seek out wargames because they enjoy the unequal starting positions. Or, some use dexterity games to level the playing field. If you haven't read this list, please do. There are quite a few interesting comments. Also, feel free to add you thoughts.

Light Euros:

I can appreciate the game mechanics, but if you find me playing a light game its because of who I'm playing with not what I'm playing. I'll play these because I enjoy the company of the people I'm gaming with. Why do you play?

Meaty Euros:
As a professor, my day job involves both research and teaching. When I go to relax, I have a hard time shutting the work out. I need something reasonably meaty or I just don't enjoy it. Power Grid (and games like PR, Java, etc.) form the low end of the meaty enough scale and they fit conveniently in relatively small time spaces. Why do you play?

When time permits, I really want something I can sink my teeth into. I like seeing the way the parts of the game interact with each other (almost like force diagrams in physics). Best of all, there is no random element in the game. If you win, it was because of what you did and your opponents failed to do. No lucky die roles. Why do you play?

There was a recent geeklist on this. I can certainly see how others might gain utility from playing, but since I don't I need others' insight here. Why do you play?

Dexterity Games: I admit to playing Jenga when I was a kid, but, if I want to do something dexterous now, I just go play ball and get my exercise at the same time. So, why do YOU play this?

ABSTRACTS:

I am drawn to abstracts because they are not affiliated with any time period or have historical value (ok...Chess and Go may have 'historical values' in a slight way) attatched to them. They are easily grasped (most of the time) and can always be dug out, set up and played quickly (except for a game like TENJO! )

Miniatures Games

Miniatures games not only allow you to have fun, be competitive and use your mind, they also LOOK awesome!

There are no other games that look as amazing as a true miniatures game with nicely painted figures and awesome looking scenery. Miniature games contribute heavily to the theme of the game and enrich the gaming experience greatly.
