This is my first list on the geek. I've been gaming since I was 14 years old (38 now) and I've been lurking here for many years but I don't post much, if at all. I have a small game collection myself, but I mostly rely on my gaming group to collect all the board games we play.

Recently, though, I've been itching to build up my own collection. My 6 year old son has been gaining interest in more complex games and I'd like to build up a meatier collection for him to enjoy now and also tougher games that he can grow in to over the next few years. He is currently graduating from games like Chicken Cha Cha Cha and Gulo Gulo to slightly deeper games like Blokus and Balloon Cup. I've also introduced him to Kahuna, which might be a bit too much for him, but it is too early to say after only one game.

I've been really excited by his interest in "games that I play with the guys" and I want to keep feeding his enthusiasm. My daughter is only 3 and hasn't gotten into games yet, but I'm hoping it's only a matter of time.

For the most part this list will lean towards lighter games that I can enjoy with my geek friends and that my kids can also enjoy, or that they will grow into in the next few years.

Recommendations for additions to the list are very welcome and appreciated.

When I told my wife that I'd planned to expand my game collection she did two things. First she rolled her eyes and then she described a board game she remembered from her childhood that was played on a map of the U.S. She fondly remembered that this game taught her a lot about American geography and whatnot. She asked me to either find that game or something similar for our kids.

I couldn't find the game she remembered (not knowing the name), but this game sure seemed to meet her request about learning geography. It also looks to be kind of fun and I thought our son would like it.

What can I say... I've fallen for the hype.

Agricola is probably too complex for my son today or for the next couple of years... but someday!

Farmers... wives... "plowing" who could resist this?

One of the games that my son likes to play with me is Ticket to Ride. We streamline the rules a bit for him, but he likes the set collecting and route building mechanics.

Amazonas seemed like it might be a bit similar.

Arkadia looks like it might make for a fairly pleasant family game. My son might be a bit young for it this point, but perhaps in a few years.

In mean time, it might be something our gaming group would enjoy.

Here's a good review:

A gaming friend has this game and it hits the table now and again.

I'd like to own this one, but I'm not sure if I'll spend money on it right away, since my friend brings it to most of our gaming nights anyway.

Still, I think my kids would like it when they're older and I plan to buy a copy at some point before it goes out of print.

Suggest that Aton may be a very pleasant, but underrated 2-player game. I haven't even heard of it before, but it looks like it may be similar to the Kosmos 2-player games.

I'm guessing my son may be a bit young for it yet, but my wife may enjoy it. Otherwise it could be something worth having around for our gaming group when there's only two of us around or when two players are waiting for other to finish a longer multi-player.

suggests that Attika might be a game that my wife (as a non-gamer) might enjoy and it also may be one that our group would enjoy as a "light"

Again, its one that I've never heard of, but it struck my fancy. Another one that might be enjoyed with gaming friends now, and my kids in the future.

I used to play MtG a lot. I wasn't that great at it, but I did make it to the pro tour once (went 2-5 and dropped out). The guys and I used to make frequent road trips to tournaments around the midwest where we stayed up late and racked up huge bar bills. Then we had kids and my wife informed me that my tournament Magic playing was behind me. She's much more friendly towards games that don't cost me $300/month. She also likes games I can play with the guys at home instead of road tripping away to some hotel in Columbus every other weekend.

I haven't played Blue Moon yet, but it strikes me as being somewhat similar in a non-collectible sort of way. I recently ordered 3 of the expansion packs off Tanga, but I haven't had a chance to play them yet. I'm going to do that before I buy the base set, but I'm keeping this on my list in anticipation of enjoying those expansion packs.

I'm a sucker for pirates so this one went on my list. I also thought it sounded like something my son could grasp.

I'm a bit confused by the fact that it has a sequel (Cartagena 2)that appears to be "almost" exactly the same. I'm not sure which one would be better to get.

I'll have to do more research on it if I decide to pick this one up.

This review has some good information:

The dad in me says that (when my son is old enough to grok it) this sort of game will be additionally educational, given its historical theme.

This is one of our groups favorite 10-minute filler games. It hits the table fairly often while we wait for everyone to show up.

I don't think my son is ready for it yet, though. I think the bidding process may be a bit over his head. Still, I'll want to own my own copy to play with him some day. And, it isn't very expensive.

I'm not sure yet if my son will be old enough to "get" this one or not, but he is a fan of Greek mythology and will at least recognize the characters.

As with the other Kosmos games, though... the price is right. I like games under $20.

This one might be more for me and the guys than for my son. He can read, but digesting all the text on the cards might be a bit much for him.

Still, might be worth it for when my attorney comes to town and we bring a bunch of 2-players to the bar with us. (I pay him in game time and he keeps me out of prison... it's a fair trade.)

When I told my son about this list and my plans to get more games the first thing he said was: "Are we going to get the game with the canoes?"
