Voiceover by a wizened sounding man: Nobody knows exactly what set off the great downfall, first came the disease, and then came the missiles, all while the squabbling leaders fought over nothing. Now that is all that there is, nothing, the dirt and dust of the shattered world, and those left behind to pick up the pieces.

Or more accurately, those left behind to scour the desert for hair dye and tattoo needles.

I love the post apocalyptic genre, I grew up on these movies. Road warrior is one of my first movie memories. Aside from Junglebook. I just love the bleak hope of people sifting through the ruins of a culture that came before, seeing things recontexualized. It just makes me happy for some reason. I just wanna play Aftermath now.

This geeklist is the place to post your favorite PA movies. Hell even post the bad ones, I just want to know which ones I have missed!

Mad Max!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079501/

Might as well start with the movie that set the tone for the genre.

I actually saw this after Road Warrior but that made it even better as far as I was concerned. This movie has Mel Gibson as a cop in a world that isn't overtly post apocalyptic, it might just be that he is an isolated cop in the outback. You get to see everything go to hell for him.

This movie feels very much like night of the living dead to me. Shoestring budget that was a labor of love while still being serious about making a good movie rather than an indulgent one.

And the end scene is so good that it inspired the whole SAW movie franchise.

Road Warrior

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082694/

While Mad Max may have come first, Road Warrior is the movie by which all other PA movies are compared.

Mel Gibson is driving around in the deserty waste, and eating dog food. It has so much good in it. It takes a quick man to beat the snake, the feral boy with the metal boomerang, the empty shotgun bit, trucks with flame throwers on them, an array of awesomely ridiculous cars, people with mohawks. It just makes me happy thinking about it.

I can pin my love of PA on this movie squarely, as a kid of maybe 8 I remember watching it with my older brothers on a format that came out at the same time as Video, giant silver discs were held in plastic cartridges, the format itself looked post something. It astounded me that someone would fight so hard for gasoline, it had some boobs in it which was wildly taboo, Max had a dog and all kids love animal sidekicks. It grabbed my imagination and never let go. Totally badass.

And Thunder Road wasn't a bad game, it is definitely on my thrift store watchlist.

Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089530/

The third in the trilogy, and the weakest of the three, at least the second half of the movie was.

However the other day at work I started shouting, "Two men enter, one man leaves" in response to something that happened. As usual my cow-workers ignored me. When things went wrong after that I of course was forced to use "Break a deal, face the wheel!" and this ultimately led me into chanting, "Gulag gulag gulag.." over and over to myself. I think when I have kids I am going to have to get a giant wheel so I can use 'break a deal, face the wheel' on them.

The first half of this movie is great, they tried to give it some star power with Tina Turner in her chainmail dress, and her song "We don't need another hero" and the movie survives this, gritty and dirty. At a certain point it gets slow and they try to recreate the joy of the car chase at the end of Road warrior and it all feels a bit forced. I haven't seen it in a while, maybe it bears watching again.

The Blood of Heroes

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094764/

This is by far my most favoritest PA movie. It is the perfect mix of the cheesey sports movie, PA, and Joeseph Cambells heroes journey.

Rutger Haur stars with Joan Chen and Vincent D'nofrio, (before he was a cockroach or Monk++ on L&O:CI) They play a sport where you try to put a dog skull on a stick. They are a traveling team wandering around playing local teams for a cut of the gate, food and pick of the towns prettiest people.

There is so much to love about this movie. It breaks the regular PA mold in that there is a society, and it functions, people aren't out killing one another for no reason, or eating human flesh for kicks. Things suck, but life goes on. All the characters are nicely developed and it is full of brutal fights. I wish there was a widescreen DVD of this out I would pick it up in a heartbeat! For a long time this held the top spot as my favorite movie of all time, It still stays in the top 2 for sure, maybe even still lingering at #1.

For a long time people would look at me silly when I would talk up this movie. But thanks to the IMDB I learned that the guy who wrote and directed it also wrote a good many great movies, like Blade Runner and Unforgiven! Take that people who thought I was crazy!

I just recently discovered this movie, A PA movie by Robert Altman?! What the hell? And it is nominally about a board game? Crazy!

All in all this movie is a downer, in the bleak tone of 60-70's sci fi. In the first half hour of the movie the last pregnant woman on earth is killed, thus destroying the only hope for the human race. And that isn't even what the movie is really about! It was a good movie, but not top teir, just too bleak I think.

I don't know that these qualify exactly, there is no picking through the ruins of society, but things certainly have gone to hell. The original is a great movie, I just re watched it recently. Still depressing but at least there is some hope of free will against all odds.

The Idea of the survivor is critical to the genre, you do what you can to survive, either eating dog food or fighting pro-sports franchises.

The remake just missed the point I thought. Pretty tepid.

This one snuck up on me from out of nowhere. The PA version of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus! A very cool version of one of the weaker of the bards works. I never really cared for it before, but sure, you throw in a few machine guns and you can count me in! (Anthony Hopkins doesn't hurt either.)

Escape from L.A.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116225/

Escape from New York I saw a short time after Road Warrior, perhaps on cartridge record once again. Now this is the movie that showed you the proper way to be a badass loner who plays by his own rules. Snake Pliskin is so tough that he cries Chuck Norrises from his one good eye.

As a kid I remember being shocked at Snakes defiance at the end of the movie. Now there was someone who played by their own rules.

While only one city is ruined in New York that is all that we need.

The sequel once again tries to remake the first movie only with lots of crappy CGI and it goes way too over the top. One of the things that makes a PA movie great is that they are brutal, they are fantasy with all the magical plot devices drained out of it leaving you with the ugly side of things. Escape from LA was much too polished and over the top actioney to be a proper sequel.

Waterworld

and the Postman

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119925/

These were some dark years for me. These two movies scarred me forever and have led to irrational hatred of Kevin Costner. (I can watch him in a baseball movie, anything other than that I am painfully reminded of what a bland actor he is.)

Here it is.. my favorite Genre getting two major releases but in the clumsy hands of Kevin Costner! Waterworld had some potential but fell into the over the top action trap, mixed with cartoonish characters that you couldn't care about if they were baby pandas with leukemia.

The postman was a full on self indulgent piece of crap! It went on forever and tried so hard to be epic but just ended up boring.

So far the demon Costner has decided to stay away from my beloved PA, but if he comes poking his nose around in it again I may have to send him a strongly worded letter.

Again I don't know if this applies, but what the hell why not. Things certainly haven't gone well in this future. I guess in the book most people have moved off world leaving behind a nearly empty earth. In the movie they play this down some. Still a classic.

A small group of survivors at a military installation who survived World War 3 attempt to drive across the desolate wasteland to where they hope more survivors are living. Hopefully their specially built vehicles will protect them against the freakish weather mutated plant and animal life and other dangers along the way. Written by Brian W Martz {B.Martz@Genie.com}

In the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust a group of survivors, mostly US Air Force personnel, travel from the western US to Albany, New York from where a radio broadcast has been received. Led by a no nonsense Major, Eugene Denton, they travel in specialized vehicles built specifically for survival in harsh conditions. Along the way, they are joined by an attractive young woman when they stop in Las Vegas, are joined by a young boy when they meet desperate survivors in the desert, must face hoards of killer cockroaches and survive a major flood in Detroit.

This was my introduction to PA movies. I remember the Rig all too clearly.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0072856/

Pretty obvious they didn't feel that American Society would survive...

Barely post-apocalyptic, and the specific apocalpse isn't mentioned, but obviously, the typical PA line of life is cheap holds true, when pedestrians are worth points on the death race.

Seriously campy. but worth seeing once...

Ridley Walker

A bit of a cheat this one as it is really just a book (although see note below) but if you are into the PA genre it is a must. It is a challenging read though, as it is written in the first person using a degenerate form of English that has evolved post-apocalyspe.

Note - although not made into a movie, 'Mad Max 3' paid homage to the book where the lost children/tribe use a similar style language to that used in the book and that the children think he is 'Captain Walker' who will lead them to safety.

More importantly this movie spawned the brilliant Simpsons Musical tribute starting Troy McClure!

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy - the entire planet is destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass, only Arthur Dent survives ! How post-apocalyptic is that ?!!

Six-String Samurai

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118736/

Pretty obscure but very fun movie from the late Nineties. The Russians dropped The Bomb on us in the Fifties and tried to invade from the west. Things stalled and fell apart. Elvis became the literal King, ruling America from Las Vegas.

Now, forty years later, the King is dead and young men -- with guitars strapped to their backs -- are coming from all across the land to become the new King. The Six String Samurai battles Red Elvis, a real nuclear family, and death metal along the way.

The movie is a blend of Fifties apocalypse film and Italian spaghetti Western, in bright colors with a surf-inspired soundtrack. The hero is Buddy. He looks like a cross between Buddy Holly and Clint Eastwood.

This movie has one of my favorite exchanges ever in film:
Bad Guy: If I were you, I'd run.
Buddy: If you were me, you'd be good-lookin'.

Goofy, sly and a whole lot of popcorn fun.
