Mechanics Analysis I: Physical structure and materials

This geeklist is part of an effort to better understand game "mechanics" as the term is used here on BGG. Project background here: http://www.alise.org/mc/page.do?sitePageId=61280#15Recommend

Certain game mechanics are apparently tied to the physical structure and materials from which the game is constructed. Even if the game is re-expressed in software, it seems to keep the mechanic in virtue of the connection to physical components in the original.
Any analytico-synthetic system flexible enough to represent distinctions drawn using the current BBG mechanics classification will need facets for objects and materials (as in the Getty AAT). It would seem that the BGG conception of game mechanic extends to the manifestation level in the FRBR Group 1 entity model.
I welcome comments and suggestions.
