This geeklist is part of an effort to better understand game "mechanics" as the term is used here on BGG. Project background here: http://www.alise.org/mc/page.do?sitePageId=61280#15

Related list here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/21592

Certain game mechanics are apparently tied to the physical structure and materials from which the game is constructed. Even if the game is re-expressed in software, it seems to keep the mechanic in virtue of the connection to physical components in the original.

Any analytico-synthetic system flexible enough to represent distinctions drawn using the current BBG mechanics classification will need facets for objects and materials (as in the Getty AAT). It would seem that the BGG conception of game mechanic extends to the manifestation level in the FRBR Group 1 entity model.

I welcome comments and suggestions.

"Dice rolling" means real physical dice, or images on a computer screen that look like real dice.

"Paper and Pencil" games are those played primarily on paper, even if (as with Tic-Tac-Toe) the game state can be represented just as easily with pieces arranged on a board.

"Crayon Rail System" is an interesting case, since it seems to pre-coordinate "line drawing" and "route/network building" with an urban areas theme. Apparently presupposes a physical crayon or pen (since Ticket to Ride is not a crayon rail game).

"Card drafting" If the choices are expressed on something other than cards, (tiles, for example) it's not card drafting.

"Hex and counter" war games use physical cardboard counters (or are software derivations of games that use cardboard counters).

A grognard may use the term "chit-pull system" in reference only to a specific method of activating units. But other games are identified in this category even if the mechanism has no connection apart from the physical act of pulling cardboard chits from a cup or bag.

So would the first, more specific mechanism be understood as a "chit-pull" system if it were accomplished in a physically different but formally equivalent way? I suspect not.
