You "playtest" published games.

We have all done this, after the game is over (if we make it that long) you stare at the board and start spouting ideas to make it better. Some of the more aspiring ones even write new rules and attempt to play their "fixed" version, sometimes even on the spot.

You buy games just for parts

Usually this is just a thrift store habit, but some will buy extra copies of cheap games for this very reason. It may be a new box, a set of pawns, or an assortment of cubes, old games are the best source for making new ones.

Everything is a potential theme

Whether it's a rock falling down a hill, a bird circling overhead, or a slow car in front of you, you look at everyday situations for a possible new idea.

You can keep yourself occupied by just staring off into space

Okay maybe this is just me, but when I'm working on games I tend to zone out. Several times people have asked me what I was doing, if they only knew my mind was going 1000 miles an hour.

This may just be me as well, but I hate the "Why didn't I think of that" factor. I rarely visit www.bgdf.com and I hate to read about all the great new ideas I didn't think of. At least 4 times I have found games in stores that I had similar notes for at home, but didn't finish in time.

I guess I'm a game designer. I've done all the things on your list.

Additionally, I think a lot of game designers go further than analyzing the rules to games that could be improved. I think we will teach the games with our own spin on the rules.

I have found that a lot of us rarely get together with friends without bringing or bringing out games to play. Sometimes other designers' work, but more often our own.

You edit the rules of existing games, by striking out the unnecessary verbiage.

One of the things that drives me crazy is unnecessary or obtuse language in game rules. I take a pen and strike out fluff and background that doesn't contribute to the understanding of the rules. Basically, the stuff that gets in the way when you're searching for an answer to that pesky rules question. I only do this with games that I don't intend to resell, or that have little monetary value. I also go a bit wack by highlighting important bits, and writing comments and what-not in the margins.

I've been playing Vanished Planet recently, and noted that they included something on the order of 6 pages of fiction at the end of the rule book. What is disappointing, is that they could have used the time spent on that fiction, to clean up the rules and increase their clarity. Fortunately the stuff is at the end of the booklet, so it's easily skipped.

Respectfully

You have a folder on your computer or a flash drive filled with Word documents of rules, playtest notes, ideas, spreadsheets, and other game design materials.

Bonus points if you disguised it as a porn folder so nobody steals your ideas.

If you get the choice to play an interesting prototype from another designer or try the last hyped game, you play the prototype to discuss mechanics with the designer.

You know your a game designer when you push your creations on your gaming group...

giggle with glee when they get a good response and people want to play again

cryand cry yourself into a hole when your game backfires and nobobody has a good time..

Its a game in it self.. Push your luck with games you make on your friends.. but if you get a alot of duds it might crush your dreams..

But you can always get back up again!
