While the others started a couple hands of Mhing, we figured we'd fill some time with Race to let anyone else arrive who hadn't yet. We all know the game well and can push out a game fairly quickly.

Charlie jumped out of the gate, and didn't slow down. I was building up a nice board, had Trade League down early and plenty of cards and options going, but every round Charlie was playing stuff. Then he started getting the 6 pointers down and was ticking down to end game, not giving my engine the time it needed to catch up. A few more rounds and my board would have solidly taken control, but he knew that and wasn't about to give me the option.

Players: Don Lisa Rob Tom

I had won this as part of ConnCon and was looking to get more play in. Lisa hadn't gotten a chance to play there and was new to Rob and Tom also.

I start off building the inn and working towards what i figured were useful buildings. A few others quickly went for some defense, or just for the VPs for the Statue and then the Chapel. The Chapel definitely got use by Lisa and Tom and i was wishing i had it, as I kept rolling low, but so was everyone else.

By mid game i had the feeling i was in trouble. Tom Lisa and Rob all had several more VPs than I, and my dice rolls continued to be horrid. Even adding a 4th die from the Farms didn't help all that much. I made due and kept moving along, but Tom just set a strong pace, rarely skipping a turn to build in, while a couple of times it took me two or more rounds to get the resources i needed to build.

I knew i was behind and not much I could do. And wasn't sure if the others could catch him. Rob made a push towards the end building for good VPs but Tom just added something else pushing upwards. Tom also had the strength to not worry about the last monster, which would have removed a bunch of VPs had he lost, letting him easily take the win.

I'm enjoying the game, even if it does have the possibility for one player to get ahead and be hard to catch him. It is a bit dicey, which is what hurt me, but i can deal with that, and at least in this game, there weren't too many slow downs as people thought about what to do.

Its one i'm glad i have and the price was right It'll get some plays.

Game 1

Players Lisa Charlie Tom Don

Looking for a quick game to fill some time we pulled this out. I did my usual, though i was a bit slower, not even getting any words in front of me for a while.

The other three battled back and forth picking up words. Tom doing a really good job of getting long word steals adding multiple letters.

In the end it was Tom who defeated the local favorite Lisa for the win.

Players Charlie Tom Don Lisa

We pulled this out for another game, as Charlie is always looking to play. (Ya thats the excuse).

Tom had a played a few times but is still learning it. I think he's just short of the truly having everything click, another play or two and he'll be running us to the ground with his production engines.

I think Lisa was fighting for a military setup which just wouldn't happen. At least whatever she was fighting for wasn't coming. Tom was just playing what he could and did have a nice military thing going with development support.

Charlie had production setup and running, and would have taken the game, had he had another round.

I however played one of the fastest boards i ever have played in 4 player. I had 7 down before the rest of 4, and really didn't slow too much. I wasn't sure if it was going to be enough or not though, as Charlie had accumulated a small stack of chits. The last round i had 10 cards down, and could both develop and settle. Charlie was on the produce phase of his cycle hoping for one more round. I chose develop and a settle also came out (as did another develop so i was safe either way) I got a 6-cost development and a 4 cost alien world marking end game.

When the scores were tallied, we managed to get in end game before Charlie could take the win. Both Tom and I edging him out.

While we were waiting for people to trickle in, I went over the rules for Mhing, which I'd had a good time playing 2p this past weekend. The first hand we played with 5p, and I had 3 flowers while everyone else had none. I went out when I could, to show them how it was done. I only had a single credit in my hand, so 4 credits = 16 points. I showed them how to score it by running down each combination and seeing if I'd met the criteria.

The second hand I had an okay "nothing connects" hand to start. I had a single flower down, and so did Lori. There was a fair amount of Chow and Pung action going on, but I'd get my turns to draw from the pile, and I got a fair amount of wilds. I was able to go out by Mhinging my last card, for a total score of 10 points (I got a flower on one of my draws) for Nothing Connects with All Honors + 2 flowers.

The game of Race had ended at this time, so we regrouped and Charlie and I played some ...

... Dreamblade. The first time I'd met Charlie, he'd mentioned that he wanted to try Dreamblade and so I told him I'd bring it. And I have, but in the past meetings we haven't brought it out. I'm glad we did this time!

I, of course, haven't played it in a while, so I was pretty rusty on the rules. Fortunately, he had read the rules in his pre-purchase vetting, and was able to fill in most of the gaps in my remembrance.

I took some random Passion and another color, and he took the Madness and the last color.

I came out early with 2 mid-power guys, and on the second turn I brought out the Dreamreef Marauder, which is pretty powerful (7 dice!) but can't attack in groups.

Anyway, my flaw was not bringing in (or having, more like!) enough small guys. Charlie brought in some small guys and was taking squares and I couldn't compete, so he kept on getting VP. On the last round, it was 5-3 in favor of him. I was crushing him pretty bad in terms of taking his guys out, but he had a tangible lead due to superior proliferation.

During the game, Lori was like "That is so cool!" multiple times. She liked the minis a lot, and Charlie was impressed with the mini quality as well. They should see Navia Dratp!
