A list to celebrate my first year as a boardgamer, set to be released around the anniversary of me signing up here. There's a "ones and firsts" theme to this list as I describe a number of gaming milestones I have met over the past 12 months.

This list is (obviously) personal to me and was something I set out to compile for myself, but I hope that it also says something about who I am or at least about the games that I like to play. This way, it might be of interest to other people as well.

What would really make my day is receiving recommendations from fellow Geeks about other games I might like to have a look at during my second year of gaming, based upon the contents of this geeklist. I know that theres the auto recommendations feature on the Geek, but the human factor has to be better!

Quite an apt first entry for an anniversary Geeklist as we have a new release to celebrate 50 years of backstabbing - a significant anniversary in the life of this classic.

This is the game that got me back in to boardgaming. I went to ManorCon in 2007 to play Diplomacy, having returned to the game in it's online form back in 2006. My boss got me back in to it mentioning that we should have a game running in the evenings around a Disaster Recovery test we were doing. Yes, I work in IT like quite a lot of other BGGers.

After that first (shorthanded) game in a hotel foyer, I looked for a way to play Diplomacy online and soon found it at the Diplomatic Pouch. Since then, I have then got my boss and other friends and work colleagues into the online Diplomacy scene.

As well as playing Diplomacy face-to-face, I have sompleted enough online full press games to warrant membership in groups like Dipsters that require reliability ratings to enter. I am taking part in a 7 game no press variant tournament and have also played Diplomacy online in realtime at RTDip.

This is the first boardgame that I bought as an adult (at ManorCon, July 2007)

There was an imposing selection of games for sale at the Con, most of which I had never heard of, but I had heard of Railroad Tycoon, having played it on the PC in several iterations in the past. That familiarity, coupled with the fact that the game was in the largest box on display clinched it for me. There's a large heft factor here! I love the huge board, I love the oversize bits. The edition I have doesn't warp and I find the colours legible, so no complaints.

I was staying with my folks during the Con and I played this with them one evening. They seemed to enjoy it! Hopefully they're well past the stage of going along with their offsprings desires and forcing smiles whilst playing through gritted teeth. Hopefully.

I had become a board gamer, rather than a Diplomacy player.

The first game I played at Brighton Boardgames Club.

I met other people from Brighton at ManorCon and they suggested that I try out the club to see if I liked it and to learn some new games. I've attended most Tuesday nights since then, at Brighton Railwaymans Club

Khronos was a bit of a brain burner game to start my Tuesday night career with, but it was good fun. I was hooked!

My first Geeklist! Pasteboard and Plastic had been running for a year before I had anything to do with it. This is an all day event that runs 3 times a year from 10AM (or earlier if you are really keen) until Midnight (or a bit later if you end up putting tables away).

P&P IV was the first Con I attended as a boardgamer. (I'll call it a convention as it's an all day event, it gets a number of groups of gamers in attendance, it has an entry fee, a goal - supporting the 42nd Brighton (Saltdean) Scouts and The Board Game Club deliver us more games to play on the day.

Pasteboard and Plastic is superbly organised by Crabro.

In a geeklist of ones and firsts, here we have the first game I have bought that has been number one on BGG. Co-incidentally, the the number of times that I have played this game this year is.... 1.

I think that I missed the boat on Puerto Rico (sorry about the pun there) and it had been played to death in my group before I joined it. I still reckon that this is a good game though, so it was worth buying.

Game ID number one on BGG and also the first game that I "hosted" - with players turning up at my house to play this (at that time I didn't own my own copy, but I do now). My Dogs get incredibly interested in the boardgames I play in my dining room and are quite keen in getting up on my lap to have a look. Fortunately they have yet to try to eat any components (or any of my guest players).

This is also another game that I have only played once, but on current form, it'll get another play before Puerto Rico does.

Wings of War is the first miniatures game I owned and also the first wargame I bought - well, it's the first game I bought in my gaming resurgence that sits on the wargames list here on BGG.

This is one of the games that I need to play more often. It's a quick enough game, I just have yet to try to push this one on people as much as I should probably do!

WoW is a great card based series, but you just gotta love the mini's. They make the game seem a lot more real to me. I'm gonna end up collecting a load of these, I can tell. I already have the first and second series and hopefully they'll get more time in the air over the coming months.

My first (and only) Essen purchase!

No, I didn't go to Essen, but some of the Brighton Boardgames Club guys did and Martin was kind enough to bring this back for me.

Powergrid is a favourite of mine and this pack just gives the game more variety and hence more life. What with the additional boards and plants, this game should get table time for years to come.

This one, I bought before it was available in the UK, which was another first for me. This is the first game that I saw create a buzz on BGG before it was released and once it was released over in North America. I was pretty sure that I was going to like Last Night on Earth though, due to the amount of coverage on BGG and the online rules availability meaning that I felt like I knew the game before it turned up.

This game is "Dripping with Theme" and is great fun to play. definitely a game to play as the night goes on in any convention or gathering!

My first CDC game and the first 2 player game I've bought and played. This is also the first game that I have played on VASSAL, albeit this game is an email version, rather than a full online experience.

TS is a tense game that really pulls you in. A two player game means that there's going to be very little downtime. Owning and playing this game got me to buy Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage and 1960:The Making of the President.

My first Pre-order.

I could afford to place the pre-order, so I did. My money will have helped the game to get published in English, but there's likely to have been enough other buyers if I had kept my money to myself. I guess it's nice to make my contribution. Perhaps it was just my time to pay up first.

I know that someone else will buy this cheaper, but that's always going to be the case since I live in England, hardly the discount capital of the world.

I'd seen the German language version of the game being played a couple of times and on both occasions it looked interesting and pretty much all the players were enthusing about it afterwards.

I want to own some games that have a high replayability factor and I want to own some games that aren't already owned by everyone else I know who plays board games, although this one looks like being popular enough that quite a few of my regular gaming buddies will own this.

I've received and played the game now and have rally enjoyed it. Having just got back from this years ManorCon, I can definitely say it was the game of the con. I reckon that this will get to number one on the Geek before the buzz dies down.

My first purely co-operative game and the first game I have played more than ten times. Most games I have played have only received a single play. (So many games, so little time - a common complaint I guess).

It's nice to have had a broad range of games to play in the past year and also nice to be able to bring something new to a gaming group that has been going for over ten years. I'm fortunate to have found a great bunch who have hundreds of games between them. My collection has a long way to go to get that large though.

This game's also rising like a rocket on the BGG ratings and may well break into the top twenty soon. Since I took this to my regular group, it's been played every week and there's still folks waiting to get their first play as well as those looking for their first win!

The last thing I'll have bought in my first year as a gamer. This is a long term gaming investment, I can start with the ASLSK's and then move on to the fully fledged game and see how things go.

ASL is seen as a pretty serious investment, initially in money and then in time. However, I got the stuff cheaply enough and intend to ease myself in to it over the months and years to come, hopefully in teh company of some local gaming mates who should be in to this sort of thing.

I certainly don't intend to go to an ASL tournament just yet, but as I started this list with a tournament game, it seemed right to end it with another.
