Sometimes you encounter a good game and something ends up ruining the game for you. Not because of the game or gameplay. You didn't notice some flaws after a couple of plays. So what make people dislike a good game?

There may or may not be a reason that I've listed any particular game with any particular comment.

Upkeep cost
You spend so much time or money just to keep up with the game or stay competitive that you decide to quit and save your money.

Overplayed
This is like the song on the radio that you hear too much until you finally get sick of it. Loved it for every minute up until you decided that you won't play another game of it. This is not the games fault becuase if you paced yourself you would still play it.

Liked too much by others
Some games you think are good, but others just want to play it too often for you. Not a dislike of the game but more like resenting the game for not getting to play other games.

Hazing
Other players welcome you to the game by going all out on you. So not only are you trying to learn the rules and little things about the game, but you have to do this with the added difficulty of the other players attacks. This can also include other players ganging up on you in some game.

Taken too seriously
There are games that you would probably like if others didn’t take it so seriously. They have put in more time and effort in to this game than you. This can be added to if they scold or ridicule you for mistakes that they now think are elementary.

Publisher Greed
The publisher seems to keep releasing versions and expansions in the hope that you'll buy it. Not an upkeep cost, but you decide to do your own little boycott against a publisher that's greedy by not playing or buying more.

Against your philosophy
If some part of the game includes something that you don't believe or agree with. In this example, if you don't believe in evolution and don't like it because of that.

Too Many House Rules.
I don't like being taught rules for a new game with house rules added. I like to play with the rules that the designers have staked the game on and have playtested numerous times, not the rules that some guy changes after a couple of playings.

DICEFEST

Some people seem to be averse to dice-reliant combat games. At least they have the refuge of balming all their grotesque tactical errors on the luck of the dice roll. Like, um, me, whenever I play a dice game.

Theme
This can be argued as part of the game or not. A bad theme or a lack of theme can cause you to not want to play it. With just a theme facelift a game can be ruined.

Poor Quality
Some game components are low quality and it becomes unplayable for you. The pieces might not work as they need to like DOA. You might be upset it cost so much for what came in the box. For example, most Steve Jackson Games are a deck of cards for $35. You might even need to cut out your own pieces from a sheet that's not perforated.

TAKEN TOO SERIOUSLY, Part II

This is a different sort of thing from the Chess entry above.

I don't have a problem with people taking seriously a game that, well, works well when taken seriously. I like the full range of game - hurtful, brutal, analysis-intense games like Chess, and chilled-out amusements, like Battle Cry and Lost Cities. And a game like chess, it rewards being taken seriously - it starts to open up and reveal all sorts of richness and all that stuff, so I don't mind spending some brain-angst getting there. And there's *neat stuff* to think about.

It'll totally kill my buzz, though, when somebody takes a game which is in some way basically an amusement and proceeds to analyze the hell out of, and play it like it was their mammy's life on the line.

I don't know, maybe this is an arbitary distinction. But some games seem to reward long thought (Chess, Go, GIPF, Tigris & Euphrates, and El Grande, fer example), and some games - well, they reward *some* thought. But it just feels like - you're going against how the game was intended. I mean, Battle Cry has frickin' *cute dice*, man!

The real problem is, some games cry out to me to be played with ease, amusement, silly voices, and maybe a few drinks. But certain opponents will approach them with such utter, ferocious analytic seriousness, that: firstly, it starts to take way too frickin' long to be fun; secondly, probably, all their analysis will make them win, so thirdly, one can find oneself, if one is weak, dragged into equally brutal analysis and maximization of a game you really just wanted to play in a chilled out way, and, you know, just roll some *BATTLE DICE* for a while and knock off a few beers.

It has frickin' *battle dice*!

Cocktails
It's a well known fact that too many cocktails will spoil an otherwise perfectly fine game of T&E.

CARD HOARDING

Some players spend the first half of the game amassing huge hands of cards, then lay their trains all at once. Almost like a surpise attack. Sure, it's a valid strategy, but for me, card hoarders take the "play" and the fun out of the game.
