"It follows than as certain as that night succeeds the day, that without a decisive naval force we can do nothing definitive, and with it, everything honorable and glorious." -- George Washington

Navies throughout history have been an important part of national strength. Great Britain for example became a strong world power when she became a strong sea power. It was her ability to extend her reach through control of the seas that helped create at one point an empire where the sun literally never set. All the way back to ancient times it was the ability to control the seas that would often make a break a nation in conflict. This has been proven over and over in the 20th century from WW II where the battles in both the Atlantic and Pacific were crucial in the victory for the allies to the Falkland Islands where Britain's fleet allowed it to win a victory half a globe away in a place where they had no base of operations outside of their naval fleet.

The 20th Century most definitely has had it's share of naval conflicts and this is greatly reflected in the number of wargames set in that century. Look under WW II nautical in the BGG advanced search and you'll find a ton of games just dealing with that specific era. Insert "ancient" in place of "WW II" and the number drops considerably.

When it comes to naval warfare prior to the 20th century there simply are not a ton of games out there. I think in part this is because from a technological point of view naval warfare was slow to change. Not that change didn't take place but truth be told the warships launched by Henry VIII were not terribly far removed from those that fought at Trafalgar. Fundamentally they had more in common than they had separating them. They both were driven by the wind power firing muzzle loading cannons to destroy their enemies. Meanwhile in the 19th century we went from the Age of Sail to the age of the Dreadnought in a span of just over 40 years. In effect ships of war advanced more in the 40 years after the American Civil War than they did in the previous four centuries. That's an incredible leap.

So with that in mind I'd like to look at some of the wargames that cover this vast era. From ancient naval warfare in the Mediterranean to the end of the 19th Century when the modern navy ship was born. Basically if the game covers the year 1900 it's gone to far.

Several limitations to this list. First, the game has to be a simulation. That means no card games. I like Enemy in Sight as much as the next man (it's a fantastic game) but we're looking for the traditional wargame simulation here.

The game must be about naval conflict. No games to be included just because they have naval units. That doesn't cut it. It's got to be pretty much all naval.

Lastly no miniature rules. I want to focus on the more traditional counter and board based type wargames. I'm a big miniatures wargamer and I love doing naval miniatures but there are 120 different rule sets out there for naval miniatures and if we start down that road we'll be hip deep in them and away from the area I want to focus on.

I think when one thinks of Age of Sail boardgames this one comes to mind most often. A true classic from Avalon Hill that is still played today by many naval wargamers. Tons and tons of ships covering a wide swath of naval history. I hear there's even a computer version of this floating around on the internet somewhere.

GMT recently jumped into this area with a release very similar to the now out of print WS&IM. It's been a popular title for GMT which now has an expansion for it up on it's P500 list called Ship of the Line. It has a ton of pre-orders for it so I guess that shows people really like the base game pretty well. I actually own Flying Colors (I got it in a game trade) but have yet to crack the rulebook on it. I hope some day to get a chance to break it out though.

Not yet in print but rather innovative with this one. A block game covering the strategic naval situation of 1805 Europe. I think this is a great idea. Block gaming with it's fog of war mechanics in a naval theme is a perfect match. So far Asia Engulfed is the only real block naval game out there and it's an excellent game, so I'm curious to seeing how this one turns out.

Avalanche Press is coming out with this one shortly and seeing how good their naval stuff is I expect this one is going to be well received. My only problem with this is I'm surprised that they're coming out with this new system covering Ironclads in the 19th Century but in Europe. Not that they didn't have ironclad battles at that time but when you think of mid 19th century ironclads you think the American Civil War rather than the Battle of Lissa. Still I hope the game is a success and thus they decide to come out with an American Civil War version.

One could make a geeklist 120 games long just dealing with pirate games but truth is few of them are truly wargame simulations so I'd really like to steer clear of those for the most part on this list. That said this one (at least in my mind) qualifies as a wargame simulation. I was a big big fan of the original and when this one his the P500 list I pre-ordered it in a shot. I even already own the microbadge.

Ok, I guess I have to include this one as it does beat my 1900 deadline. Mind you it's a cool game I've been fortunate to play although just once. It's a very interesting time in naval history as ships have moved beyond the American Civil War type ironclads but have yet to reach the era of the Dreadnought. Although truth be told the US Navy had several Monitor style ironclads still in service during this time period.

I love the cover on this game.

Great List!

I just recently got this title and haven't had a chance to play it yet. But with my read of the rules it does a pretty good job of representing classic ship on ship battles in a way that is a few steps up from Broadsides, yet the rules are not so daunting as Wooden Ships and Iron Men. I got it for the ship combat alone; I really doubt I will play the land combat portion, although maybe I will change my mind.

Lepanto, October 7, 1571
Game in NoTurkeys! n.4 2.2009
Days of Lepanto were the last days of the galleys. The sailing ships, which timidly appeared in this battle, represented the future: in comparison to the galleys, they were faster on long distances and they could bring a greater number of guns. Lepanto also constituted the last important occasion in which a naval battle was performed by foot soldiers, fighting aboard of the ships, like on the common ground. 15 years later, in fact, the clash among the English Royal Navy and the Spanish Armada will present guns and sails instead of swords and oars... and this was also the beginning of Venice’s seapower ending.
