Having knocked off Polio, Small Pox, black death, for the most part. It seems that so many geeks have struggled to cope with a tragic and premature death caused by cancer.

Here are some reasons that cancer research is awesome.

Donating money can win you a pile of GeekGold!

Every time a board game geek purchases one of Ron's tickets, I put a geekgold into a geekgold pot. In addition a number of very generous users have donated geekgold to this pot. So many tickets were sold that I can no longer afford to pay out the pot on my own. So, I've posted an auction for $20 in order to raise the necessary geekgold funds to give away this enormous award. You can see the auction here.

Also, Scott Alden offered to match the geekgold pot. So, what that means is that we've raised about 860 geekgold for the pot already and Aldie will cover the other half. What will you do with all that geekgold?

Seriously, you can win even more cool stuff by donating to cancer research

Anthony Mikulaschek (aka amikulaschek) has offered to give away a 3rd place prize (while last, certainly no the least) with a copy of the expansion game & Cetera.

As of posting this list, there are about 123 tickets still available. 23 of those qualify you for the Elfenroads drawing, too. So, those 23 are the prime tickets. Quickly, jump over to Ron's thread to donate to cancer and win a heart of gold a super cool prize!

Cancer is the Leading Cause of Death
Every day, people die from cancer. Every dollar that we spend on cancer research directly translates into increased time that loved ones get to spend with each other. Cancer research turns into quality time, not just time keeping people alive on IVs and ventilators. Ultimately, cancer research dollars turn into the most valued time that we can spend with another person.

Unfortunately, it never turns into enough time. Donate more!

Cancer Has Affected Everyone
Many Geeks have lost someone tragically to cancer. After I lost my mother, many people came out of the woodwork to share their experiences and their losses and how it still affects them years later. Many of these wonderful and generous people are here on BGG. More than a gaming community, this is a community of my friends. Thank you.

Cancer Runs in the Family
Cancer has a tendency to be heritable. My great grandmother died prematurely because of cancer. My Granmother died when she was 57, because of breast cancer. My mother died when she was 56 because of Pancreatic cancer. Yet, for all that, each of them was able to live much longer than they could have expected as a result of cancer research. If my grandmother had breast cancer today, there would be a good chance that she'd be able to survive. When my children are grown, I hope that Pancreatic cancer will as treatable as breast cancer and breast cancer will be thought of as a minor illness.

I can think of 6 people off the top of my head who developed cancer prior to the age of 50. 3 of them were in their early 20s when they were diagnosed. 3 of the six are still alive. If not for cancer research, my life would be absent and additional three people. How many people do you know that you love that have fought cancer? I'm in my early twenties, I do not doubt that that number will grow.

It's terrible to lose someone you love

But, there is good news. Many people have learned the hard way and desperately don't want you to have to lose your most beloved and reliant friend to cancer. They are donating actively, campaigning for the funds to conduct cancer research, running marathons, having bake sales, whatever it takes to scrape together the funds necessary to conduct this research.

Not Cousin Jonathan,

But Cousin Stephen.

My cousin Stephen McConkie (27 years old, 1 year old son) died April 2006 from cancer.

We need to find a way to stop this diesease.
