Lazy, but Grateful (for all I don't have to do to enjoy a game)

So, I was sitting down to a game of Wabash Cannonball the other day and I started to think about how amazing that simple fact is. Someone went through all the trouble of thinking that game up, of testing it, of seeing it through the publication process, and of selling it to me. All of this just so I could spend some enjoyable time playing a game with my family and friends. And, that is true of every game I own.

I have no idea how I would be spending my time if not for all those people involved in getting my games to me. I venture to guess, however, that it would be quite a bit less fulfilling.

So, I'm grateful to everyone who took part in the process. Please feel free to add something I missed or share your own thoughts.

Grateful to Game Designers

I can see the attraction of designing a game. Who hasn't had a thought along the lines of "that would be a good theme for a game" or "that would make a neat mechanic"? Still, out of all the geeks with thoughts like that how many have seen a game all the way through to completion?

Not I. Too much work, too many other responsibilities. I appreciate those who have seen it through to completion.

Grateful to Playtesters

I know little about the playtesting process. I do, however, know that it's an important part of process and all the games I enjoy have benefited from it.

This is probably the only part of the process (other than spending money) where I could ever see myself contributing.

Grateful to Publishers

I realize that producing games for the gaming hobby is a business just like any other. People need jobs. I am not only OK with that, I hope they make lots of money. That way they can keep producing games rather than leaving for more profitable opportunities.

I'm especially grateful for the niche publishers. Any MBA can figure out how to make money with Ticket to Ride, but what about Wabash Cannonball?

Grateful to BGG and its Administrators

Some friends had Settlers of Catan. I played it and was hooked. Later, I went looking for more "games like Settlers of Catan." Then I found this place. There are so many games that I would not have found and gaming experiences that I would not have had if not for this site.

Grateful to BGG users

As great an idea as a Board Game website is, BGG would be empty without its user contributions. It amazing how much stuff is here with all the reviews, session reports, images, geeklists, threats, variants, player aids and other files. On top of that, there are people here to offer suggestions or rules advice or whatever.

I have found more enjoyable games (and consequently had better gaming experiences) here than any other resource. Many games that I enjoy playing I would never have heard of if not for the efforts of other geeks.

Grateful to Gaming Stores

Whether Friendly Local or Online, games would never hit my table unless someone was willing to sell them to me. Yes, it's a job. Yes, they make money. But, it's a job I'm not willing to do and I am perfectly will to pay what there asking.
