Command Magazine - A Tribute

In the early nineties I had for 4 years a membership on Command Magazine, a bimonthly magazine which includes a wargame with a hard carton countersheet.

Command Magazine often had interesting articles - sometimes on topics I had never heard about. Besides unknown wars or battles were often depicted in games and articles. To say however that the Command Magazine games are first class is an exaggeration, but if the topic appealed to me I was often able to play it at least once. Besides I liked their map and counter graphical design.

Yes, Command Magazine games were designed to play once or twice with an opponent who also only had read the rules, so you could learn while gaming. And with a subscripion for far less than 10 USD a copy it proved to be a very good value for money.

Other magazine games such as Vae Victis and Strategy & Tactics never appealed to me much. So I would like to thank Command Magazine and XTR for the good memories I had with their games: "The hole you left in my wargaming heart has never been filled. I miss you!".

If you share this opinion please add your favourite one Command Magazine game here below. Don't forget to explain to us why! A good memory, the game design ... whatever!

Blood & Iron

I played this game twice with an interval of 15 years. Oh boy, time flies by. A good-looking - the spring colors make me happy - and a pretty decent one to play too.

The Prussians have to advance over the flanks and the Austrians have to pray that not too many things go wrong, but they make a chance.

I hope a game on the Austrian-Prussian War at campaign level - Bohemian theatre - will be available sooner or later. I believe I have to wait many years.

Although I think highly of a number of the games from Command, I still think this one stands head and shoulders above the rest.

The system is simple but the situation is tense, and all the games I've played of this, even the blowouts, were incredibly fun and made excellent stories afterwards. I would recommend this game even today to just about anyone interested in the topic.

Ben Knight, come back to us!

This (or possibly Cortes: Conquest of the Aztec Empire, also Command) was the first hex-and-counter wargame I played that didn't have NATO symbols and black-on-single-colour counters. I barely understood that colourful counters were allowed

That's what I remember about Command magazine, they were different, colourful, and quick-play - and what I rediscover every so often, I have virtually the entire run, and still haven't played some! I still judge new games by how they shape up to Command games. Not that they were all so great - some of the new ones shape up better.

This my favorite because it's the only Command I own and the only one I've ever played. I do like it though. I like the very obscure topic and the Great War tactics, it's trench warfare in the scrub desert. (Paraguay v. Bolivia) How many games are there with World War I tactics that aren't about World War I? I'm developing a fetish for Paraguay since I also have Triple Alliance War by Strategy and Tactics. I think I'll get the upcoming Guerra a Muerte by Against the Odds to feed my fetish.

A wild, fluid affair. German panzers running amok in France with little regard for ZOC and supply!

When it is your turn to send a VASSAL move, the wait is excruciating. When it's my turn, well, I've been busy.

There were a number of great games, but this is one that I thought of as an underappreciated game. Very tense and fluid. There is a critical piece of errata to do with artillery but like most Command games the playtesting was very solid. I would play this again anytime.

Honourable mention goes to Sunrise of Victory an excellent, playable game about the critical period of the War in Russia '42 - '43. There are so few games on this conflict that aren't unplayable monsters. I recommend this to anyone who likes WW2 EF.
