So I'm kind of getting tired of the auto balanced euro games. Yes, these are magnificent designs but it often feels like there can be no wrong move and they game makes sure that you are all 1 VP away all game long.

I'm designing some homebrews to break out of that mold, and I was wondering which games people thought were remarkably balanced despite being apparently unbalanced with regards to setup, powers, etc. Or balanced in an innovative way besides the "you get 10 VP so now I get 7 VP" euro balance.

Please add games you think are balanced in interesting ways, have asymmetrical powers, etc. Anything that breaks the mold and still allows for interesting and fun gaming.

Wargames, euro games, anything is fair game!

No#3 so I'm not alone in enjoying the ways the different powers and setup create an unbalanced situation, yet a tense and exciting game. It's hard to understand that the game is balanced over the coarse of the game not each round. Still add some space race rolls and people just can't handle it. The auto victory helps this one too. If it gets wildly unbalanced then the game ends, and you start again.

I've played this twice. Similar to the other entry but this one is even wilder than TS. It's like my manic depressive ex girlfriend. The balance is all over the place yet both games have been very tight going into the last few card plays.

I think that many wargames would fit here. That's what I enjoy most about them; the asymmetry.

Hammer is one of the best. I remember thinking the first time: "There is no way on earth the Scots can win this thing". Then I changed my mind "The Scots will win easily if Edward doesn't come out fast enough". As I've played more, however, I've come to realize that it is one of the most amazingly balanced games I've ever played. The English seem to win more often in a tournament setting but the reining champ at the WBC uses the Scots. I think you just have to play the Scots in a different way; they require more maneuver and thoughtful play but I'm convinced it's balanced. This game has a lot going on despite it's simplicity. You absolutely must approach each side differently.

Your powers of persuasion & negotiation are the most important factor with regard to your chance of winning.

There's a bit of a learning curve here; I think that for two beginning players, the detective may be a bit easier, but after a few plays I think that both the detective and Mr. Jack are well-balanced in their respective powers and goals. While Mr. Jack can suffer a lot more from a single bad slip-up, the detective has a much harder time narrowing managing to single out suspects. I love how different this game feels depending on which side you're playing.

I am opening up a giant can of worms with this one, because many people feel the game is awfully unbalanced. I think the problem is more with learning curve (until the people playing Heroes are experienced at that role, they are probably going to be slaughtered), but I think that when you have a bunch of experienced LNoE players, the game is balanced and beautifully asymmetric. The Heroes scrounge for resources, clinging to each card until they absolutely need it, while the Zombie player is casually flinging cards left and right, trying to burn as many as possible each turn in order to draw new ones. Heroes use themselves as bait to force the Zombie player into strategically bad moves, and the Zombie player tries to cut off escapes and surround the weakest Heroes. The balance is strengthened by the Growing Hunger expansion, which is as much as toolbox as an expansion, with a whole lot of optional rules that can be used to weight scenarios and make easy handicaps for newer players.

More worms. There's even a power called Worm...

The powers in Cosmic Encounters are wildly imbalanced. It's the *players* who make the game balanced -- if one player is overtly powerful, then the other players must work together to take him down. CE also has an uncommon mechanic that the defending player in an attack is randomly determined: the player who was your ally in the last attack, may become your opponent in this one!

Ogre is the very definition of asymmetric gameplay. In the very finely balanced basic scenario, one player has the Ogre and the other player has a multitude of smaller forces to try and stop it.

In this one, the Germans must use their early superiority in effective combat units and the element of surprise to deliver a speedy knockout blow to the Red Army and the industrial base that supports it; if they fail, growing Russian numbers and production will overwhelm the numerically inferior Wehrmacht.

This game is one of my favorites. Two impulse movement system accurately simulates armored breakthrough and exploitation. Simple but realistic rules for weather, supply and German air superiority. Recommended.

Balancing two powers ? Easy

Here are NINE decks for you. While some of the matches may be bit in favour of one or the other power (although many of the complaints may be due to lack of experience), I really think this is one to study if you're into game design.
