Hey all,

I want to introduce my kids to the wonderful world of resource management gaming, to games like San Juan and Settlers of Catan, but ones that are much simplier, preferably in the board layout area - kids have a tendancy to knock over the little pieces and get distracted if there is too much in front of them.

Any help would appreciated!!

This is a print and play game, so you can mount the tiles onto nice thick card or foamcore.

It's designed as a two player game, but if you read the rules, you'll see that by adding map tiles and an additional set of cards for each player, that more people can be accommodated.

Each map tile has water spaces and island spaces. Each island has its Victory Points, Card Draws, and Goods Wanted (X Rum, X Cloth, and X Gems).

Each card has up to 5 Sail points on it, and some trades goods points on it (Rum, Cloth, and Gems). So, for example, a card might have 2 Sail, 1 Rum, 0 Cloth, and 1 Gems.

Each turn, a player must pay to Sail to another island (if he/she wants/can), then may play goods points to match what the island wants. Then those cards are discarded. If the player does this he/she is awarded victory points and is allowed to draw more cards.

There are some elements of resource management in this game. As they collect encounter cards, do they:

* keep them as insurance to get out of a perilous situation, or

* turn them in to avoid rolling the dice in an encounter and thus make a guaranteed profit, or

* turn them in as a "story set" in a port to earn money?

Of course, adults have another choice: use them to hurt their opponents, but there's no point in teaching them that right away ...

A simple type of resource management card game, no reading required. Just have to be able to count a little, to compare the number of vampire heads you have with those of your opponents, to decide what to do on your turn. Our grandkids loved this game, even before they started school, and have played it for many years.

No reading required. Simple rules. Must decide when and where to send your pirate ship cards to capture treasure ships, and when to save your cards for possible better treasure in the future. Simple resource management, but easy to learn and quick to play. Our entire family enjoys this game.

This is a hidden-bids game, but also a type of resource management. When do you bid for valuable properties, and when do you save your money and take a cheap one? Easy to learn, no reading required, but must understand numbers well. Fast game, but fun.
