It's that time of year. The beginning of the summer game convention season and along with that, voting for the 2008 Charles S. Roberts Awards. The award is named after wargaming designer legend Charles Roberts. The man who is considered the father of the modern wargaming hobby.

The award was first awarded in 1974 where Avalon Hill's Third Reich received the award for best professional game. Today the award is split into more categories including Best Pre-World War II Boardgame, Best World War II Boardgame, Best Post-WWII, Modern Era Boardgame, Best Wargame Graphics and Best Professional Wargame Magazine.

To qualify for the 2007 CSR Award a game must have been published in the 2007 calendar year. A complete list of games that qualify for this year's awards can be found here.
http://grognard.com/info1/game07.html

For more information about voting for the CSR award, as well as a copy of this years ballot can be found here. Balloting ends on May 22nd.
http://www.consimworld.com/archives/001866.html

The final Nominees will be announced on Wednesday, May 28 at ConsimWorld Expo 2008.

The purpose of this list is to take a look at some of the possible nominees for this year's award. Feel free to add any game to this list that you wish as long as it is listed on the above link. Remember that games published in 2008 are not eligible.

Likely one of the front runners for the WW II game category. It's predecessor Europe Engulfed won the award in 2003. Would be a surprise not to see this one nominated.

Pretty much a lock for nomination For best WW II wargame and perhaps the front runner at this point. The Eastern Front wargamers are simply raving about this one.

MMP hit it big with Victory Lost which was the big CSR winner last year. Can they do it again with another Eastern Front game? Definitely a strong shot at a nomination at the very least.

Can a reprint win? Yes it can and this classic reprint could very well win a nomination. I give it a 50-50 chance of getting a pre-WW II nomination and a good 75% chance of getting a nomination for best graphics.

Worthington is one of the real up and coming wargame companies in my opinion and this looks like their best shot at a nomination this year. The map and counters are perhaps the nicest I've seen for any block game. I hope their upcoming Gettysburg game gets the same treatment.

Columbia Games has only two eligible games this year but with Wizard Kings being a second edition reprint this seems likely it's best chance for a nomination. It's been a popular game with block gamers so I think it's got slightly a better than even chance of a nomination.

Another lock in my opinion for nomination for Best Magazine-Published Boardgame. This for me is the best magazine published game I have ever played so as you would guess I would like to see it not only nominated but win.

I think it also has a small chance for best wargame graphics as the counters and over all artwork is some of the best I have ever seen. Being it is a magazine game it might be a bit of a long shot for a graphics nomination but I honestly do think it's deserving.

Part of the Great Battle of History Series. A popular series and great looking game without question. Problem is in general only the first game in a series tends to get nominated. However this one because the theme is somewhat different combined with the really nice artwork might just get a nomination.

This would be my pick for Best Pre-WWII game. The system is very good, and this game has a lot of back and forth--both sides get to attack, and it's balanced enough that games are very tense.

Of course, what the awards should do is expand this category--one category for all games prior to the 1930s (depending on when you think WWII started) is absurd. Especially since it covers three areas (ACW, ancients, Napoleonics) that are among the most popular for wargames. Just look at the number of games that Brian has already listed in that category.

"ESPAÑA 1936" is about the Spanish Civil War and it is a nice gateway wargame. It can compete in the Pre-WWII category or even in the one of WWII, since this conflict can be seen as the trailer of WWII.

The English edition is about to hit the shelves...
